ALLIANT RELODER 10X

It’s been almost a decade sinceAlliant’s Reloder 10x powder

was reviewed in these pages. Backthen, there were few cartridgeswith published Reloder 10x data.As befitting the name, most werebenchrest or small varmint car-tridges. A decade has seen the listgrow substantially with at least 15cartridges in the 2012 Alliant Re-loader’s Guide.

In 1998, the Alliant Powder Com-pany entered into an agreementwith the Swedish powder com-pany Bofors to manufacture theentire Reloder line. At the timethis included Reloder 7, 12, 15, 19and 22. During the changeover,Bofors was unable to satisfacto-rily duplicate Reloder 12, and itwas discontinued; but Reloder 25,the slowest burning of the series, was added. In 2002, Alliant intro-duced Reloder 10x. It was slightlyfaster burning than Reloder 12.Over time the series has continuedto expand and now consists ofReloder 7, 10x, 15, 17, 19, 22, 25,33 and 50. All are manufactured byBofors with the exceptions ofReloder 17 and 33, which are im-ported from Nitro Chem E ofSwitzerland.

Alliant used to publish a “Rela-

tive Quickness” chartlisting the burning rateof its powders as apercentage of its fast -est, Bullseye, that wasassigned an arbitraryranking of 100 percent. In that context, theReloder series lookedlike this: RL-7, 19.4;RL-10x, 16.9; RL-15,13.7; RL-17, 12.5; RL-19, 11.3; RL-22, 11.1;RL-25, 10.5.

The discontinued Re -loder 12 was rated at14.4. The new Reloder33 and 50 powders arenot listed, as I have not begun towork with them.

Reloder 10x is, as are all of theReloder series, an extruded, dou-

ble-based powder with a nitroglyc-erin content of approximately 10percent. Individual kernels areabout .031 inch in diameter andhave lengths varying from .040 to.060 inch, on average. Color is a

medium gray. Comparativelistings suggest 10x is a tickslower burning than Hodg-

don’s H-322 and Accu-rate’s 2015 and fasterburning than IMR’s3031 and Hodgdon’sBenchmark.

Although Reloder 10xwas well-suited for the.222 Remington, it couldnot generate the veloc-ity of Reloder 7 and, asa practical matter, weseldom encounter thecartridge these days.Conversely, Reloder 10xis a superior powder in the slightly larger.223 Remington, espe-cially in bullet weightsof 50 grains or less. Inheavier weights, evenif Reloder 10x does not

produce the highest velocity, itoften turns in exceptional accu-racy. Where previously I had lim-ited .223 Remington testing to 45-and 50-grain bullets, I included the40-grain Hornady this time around. In the .22-250 Remington last time,40-, 45- and 50-grain bullets wereincluded and were repeated here.

New this time with Reloder 10xis the .243 Winchester. AlthoughAlliant has published data for bul-lets up to 85 grains, I found at theheavier weights a great deal of ve-locity is sacrificed so restrictedmy efforts to 65-, 70- and 75-grainbullets. Results were impressive.

Also new this time is the .30-30Winchester. My Model 94 Win-chester carbine often serves as a

tag-along rifle in the off-season forimpromptu targets or the oddvarmint. Here lightweight bulletsare all that are needed, and Re -loder 10x performs admirably. Al-liant actually lists 10x with bulletweights up to 170 grains, but I longago settled on my favorite huntingloads, so here just 110- and 130-grain bullets are listed. They areideal for the task as well as for offhand practice or introducingthose of small stature to the worldof guns.

The .308 Winchester appeared inthe earlier review with 110- and125-grain bullets, and much ofwhat was said about the .30-30 canbe repeated here. The lightweightbullets are less expensive, use less powder, produce less recoiland noise and are generally morefun. In the case of the 125s, whenproperly constructed, they make a satisfactory whitetail load, andReloder 10x produces tack-drivingaccuracy with them.

One cartridge I would not havethought of to pair with Reloder10x is the .303 British – at leastwith lightweight bullets, yet Al-liant now includes 10x with 123-,150- and 180-grain bullets. Onlywith the lighter 123s does it pro-

duce higher velocities than otherReloder powders, so testing waslimited to a 125-grain Sierra.

It would be easy to see Reloder10x in the .30-40 Krag, but muchlike the .222 Remington, the car-tridge isn’t encountered frequentlyenough to justify spending devel-opment dollars on it. More’s thepity.

A final stop on the Reloder 10xjourney is the .45-70. In the previ-ous review, Alliant had no pub-lished 10x data for this cartridge, and I was on my own. This time, however, Alliant has come to therescue with data for both trapdoorand lever-action pressure levelswith 300-, 350- and 400-grain bul-lets. Once again, included are myexperiences with both jacketedand cast bullets.

Over the past few years, most of my long gun fun shooting, asopposed to that done to meet writing demands, has been withcast bullets in the .45-70 at nearblack-powder velocities. Neithersmokeless powder nor cast bul-lets impose any such restrictions, but re-creating the cartridge’s earlyparameters, albeit with smokelesspowder, is a great joy. In this con-text, Reloder 10x is at its best, nes-tled between two very popularpowders for the cartridge, IMR’s4198 and 3031.

All in all, this updated review ofReloder 10x has been more prof-itable than the first, encompass-ing more cartridges and bulletweights. •

John Haviland

The .416 Rigby was neverchambered in a great num-ber of rifles and nearly diedof neglect 30 or so years

ago. The Rigby was revived in the late1980s, however, when Ruger cham-bered the cartridge in its M77 Mag-num Mk II and Federal Cartridge beganproducing ammunition. Today the big

Rigby is more popular than ever withthe cartridge chambered in rifles suchas the CZ 550 American, Dakota Model76 African and now Montana RifleCompany’s Dangerous Game Rifle.Factory loads are available from Hor-nady, Federal, Norma, Nosler andWinchester. With its surging popular-ity, premium .416 bullets from a vari-ety of companies have also arrived forthe handloader.

Tiffany Woods used a 25-pound sack oflead shot against the butt of the MontanaRifle Company Dangerous Game Rifle .416Rigby to tame the recoil of Federal loads.

Handloads for a Classic Safari Cartridge

I borrowed a new .416 Rigby Dangerous Game Riflefrom Montana Rifle Company and mounted a ZeissDuralyt 1.2-5x 36mm scope in Warne steel rings to see how well some of these premium bullets shot witha variety of powders and with Federal Safari factoryammunition.

The Rigby’s standard weight bullet is 400 grains, andthat’s the single weight most bullet companies offer. That bullet weight is usually offered in an expandingform to kill lesser large game and as a solid for thedeepest penetration in the biggest animals. These bul-lets are the same weight, so they shoot to the samepoint of aim with the same sight setting. However,Barnes adds some additional versatility to the .416with its 300- and 350-grain Triple-Shocks and 350-grainBanded Solids. The 200 to nearly 400 fps faster Triple-Shocks significantly flatten the .416’s trajectory. Infact, the .416 shooting 300-grain Triple-Shocks 2,900fps flies a couple of inches flatter out to 400 yards than180-grain bullets from a .30-06.

The composition and structure of .416 bullets forhunting the largest game depends on the company thatmanufactures them. Triple-Shocks are made of copperwith a solid shank with multiple grooves to lessenbore friction, and a hollow forward section with fourpetals peels open to create a wide frontal diameter.Barnes Banded Solids are turned from brass with mul-tiple grooves cut into the shank and are narrower toreduce rifling contact and pressures. Hornady’s Dan-gerous Game Solid and Dangerous Game eXpandingare both made with a copper-clad steel jacket sur-rounding a lead core. The eXpanding bullet has anopen tip that exposes the lead core to allow the bulletto expand, while the Solid has an enclosed flat tip.Nosler’s Partition is built with an exposed lead tip thatreadily mushrooms until it reaches a dividing wall thatstops expansion. The Nosler Solid is made of toughbrass with a flat tip for straight penetration.

I only shot Speer’s Fusion and Trophy Bonded bulletsin Federal’s Safari factory-loaded ammunition. TheTrophy Bonded Sledgehammer Solid has a thick

bronze jacket bonded to a lead core. It has a flat point,or “clipped-tip,” to produce straight penetration. TheTrophy Bonded Bear Claw’s copper jacket is bondedto the lead core in the front of the bullet. Its solidshank remains rigid to drive the expanded nose evendeeper. Speer’s Fusion bullet has its copper-alloyjacket deposited on a lead core one molecule at a timeby electrodeposition. Speer says this bonds the jacketto the lead core. The Fusion bullet has a more slendershape leading to its tip to cleave air more efficientlythan a roundnose.

According to SAAMI (Sporting Arms and Ammuni-tion Manufacturers’ Institute), the Rigby’s averagemaximum pressure is 52,000 psi. In contrast, the aver-age maximum pressure is 62,000 psi for the .375 H&HMagnum and 65,000 psi for the .416 Remington Mag-num. The conventional explanation for that relativelylow .416 Rigby pressure limit was that it provides asafety margin for the cordite powder originally loadedin the Rigby that was susceptible to spiking chamberpressure in the searing heat of Africa and India. Backin 1911, John Rigby may have also decided his car-tridge shooting a 410-grain bullet with a muzzle veloc-ity of 2,370 fps and muzzle energy of 5,100 foot-pounds(ft-lbs) of energy was about all the fun someone shoot-ing a .416 would want to endure.

Bullets used to develop handloads include (left to right): Barnes300-grain Triple-Shock, 350 Triple-Shock, 350 Banded Solid,Hornady 400-grain Dangerous Game eXpanding, Hornady 400Dangerous Game Solid, Nosler 400-grain Partition and Solid.

H-1000 by Hornady 400-grain Dan-gerous Game eXpanding bullets. That load generated 62 ft-lbs of re-coil energy at the butt of the 12-pound Montana Rifle DangerousGame Rifle. That’s all the enjoy-ment I can take.

All the powders listed with the400-grain bullets turned in low ex-treme velocity spreads. The high-est was 40 fps with Hybrid 100 Vand the Hornady Dangerous GameSolid. The lowest was 7 fps with

Shocks. Shooting 109.0 grains ofH-4831 gave a spread of 25 fps withthe 300-grain bullet. Dropping to98.0 grains decreased bullet speedto 2,407 fps and increased spreadto 101 fps. The Barnes bullet hada spread of 34 fps and an averagevelocity of 2,658 fps loaded with98.0 grains of IMR-4007 SSC. Goingdown to 89.0 grains dropped ve-locity to 2,422 fps and increasedextreme spread to 239 fps. Thethree bullets from both reduced

Trail Boss. Thirty grains filled about70 percent of the Rigby’s powderspace. That load fired the Barnes350-grain Triple-Shock at 1,367fps. Velocity spread for three shotswas 46 fps. The light, 8 ft-lbs of re-coil was greatly appreciated.

All the bullets I loaded for the.416 contained a groove to crimpthe case mouth. However, theRigby case has a .5-inch neck thatis long enough to grip almost theentire length of the shank of a 400-grain bullet. To determine if thetension of the .410 inch insideneck diameter of the long neckwas adequate to hold a bullet inplace against the .416’s heavy re-coil, I left one cartridge, without acrimp, in the magazine and fired12 rounds. The repeated recoilshoved the Nosler Partition fromthat cartridge about .1 inch deeperinto the case, and its tip was flat-tened from mashing against thefront of the magazine. From thePartition’s smashed nose, the car-tridges were sliding forward in themagazine during recoil. However, they must have bounced back, be-

loads fell way low of the targets at100 yards, so who knows if theylanded anywhere close together.

After an afternoon shooting the.416 Rigby, a reduced recoil loadseemed a sensible idea. However, after shooting the Barnes 300-grain bullet with reduced weightsof standard powders, that was notthe path to follow. Mercifully, theHodgdon manual lists reduced re-coil loads with the Speer 350-grainbullet using 25.0 to 35.0 grains of

Winchester Supreme 780 and theNosler Solid. Most were between12 and 15 fps.

Velocity spreads were somewhathigher at 40 to 80 fps with thelighter 300- and 350-grain Triple-Shocks and 350-grain BandedSolids. The largest spread was 149fps with H-4350 and 350-grainTriple-Shocks. Velocity spreads re-ally took an upward hike when fir-ing reduced weights of a couple ofpowders with the 300-grain Triple-

That pressure limit works outrather well with today’s powders, because the big Rigby case has abit of room to spare with a 400-grain bullet seated over a bucket-ful of powder. Of all the loadslisted in the accompanying table, the only powder charge that wascompressed was 115.0 grains of

Montana Rifle is building its Dan-gerous Game Rifle on its new Pro-fessional Hunter action. MontanaRifle says the PH action is a dou-ble square bridge Mauser actionwith controlled round feed andthree-position safety. The actionlooks like a huge version of Mon-tana’s Model 1999 action with flatreceiver bridges, large bolt handleand two steel crossbolts reinforc-ing the America walnut stock.

The .416 is a huge cartridge, butthe maw of the Professional Huntermagazine swallows five. A cartridgemust be first snapped into themagazine before chambering, be-

cause the bolt’s extractor will notjump over the rim of a cartridgeplaced loosely on top of the mag-azine follower.

Turning the rifle sideways and upand down, it always grabbed a car-tridge and shoved it into the cham-ber. While standing and shooting,I was able to quickly fire fiverounds with 400-grain bullets intoabout 3 inches at 25 yards. As Ipulled the rifle down out of its recoil rise, I grabbed the bolt han-dle, yanked open the bolt and threwout the empty case. Pushing thebolt forward helped bring the bar-rel back down onto the target, andI fired again. Twice of that drillwas enough, because, even thoughthe rifle weighed 12 pounds with aZeiss Duralyt 1.2-5x 36mm scopein Warne steel rings, the kick wasfierce.

After shooting the DangerousGame Rifle a few more times off-hand and extensively from thebench a total of about 300 times, the only problem that arose wasthe scope ring bases’ screws shookloose a couple of times. The rifleitself is bulletproof.

cause that cartridge and otherswere always at the back of themagazine.

So the .416 cartridges do requirea crimp. Too much crimp will bulgethe front of the neck or even bucklethe shoulder and prevent a car-tridge from chambering. How muchcrimp seems to depend on thedepth of a bullet’s crimping groove. The Barnes and Nosler solids meas-ure about .383 inch in diameter in

their crimping grooves. The diam-eters measured from .399 to .403inch at the crimping grooves ofthe other bullets listed in the loadtable. I set the Hornady seating diedown enough to turn in the casemouth rims to an inside diam -eter of .404 inch. That amount ofcrimp was sufficient. Every oncein awhile, I checked a cartridgethat had been in the magazinewhile firing two or three other car-tridges, and the bullet in that car-tridge had not jumped the crimp.

After shooting all the loads listedin the table, I returned to thebench in hopes of loading solidand expanding bullets of the samebrand and weight to shoot to thesame place at 100 yards withoutadjusting the Zeiss scope. I triedthe Hornady Dangerous Game eX-
