    ATSU

    The ATSU has been designed to take provision of allforeseen evolutions. The modularity concept forsoftware permits to ease data link capability duringall Communication Navigation Surveillance/Air TrafficManagement (CNS/ATM) transitions.

    The ATSU software is partitioned into two main parts:- Aircraft interface / host platform and- Data link applications.

    AIRCRAFT INTERFACE/HOST PLATFORM SOFTWARE

    The aircraft interface/host platform is composed offour services :

    - Air/ground communication, used for themanagement of the air/ground communicationmedia,

    - Human machine interface, used for themanagement of the CNS/ATM cockpit interfaces(MCDU, printer and alert function),

    - On-board peripherals, used for the managementof the communication with the on-boardperipheral units (Data Management Unit (DMU),CFDIU, FMS and Cabin Terminal (CT)),

    - System management, used for the acquisition ofthe aircraft parameters for applicationsoftware use and monitoring of the system

    (power supply and BITE functions).

    DATALINK APPLICATIONS

    The data link applications include only AirlineOperation Control (AOC) for the pre FANS configuration.

    The AOC applications are dedicated to datacommunication services between the aircraft and theairline facility.

    The AOC is composed of :- Remote AOC applications and- Hosted AOC applications.

    For the remote AOC applications the ATSU only routesdata to and from AOC peripherals. This routing is incharge of receiving ground messages and routing themto the right AOC peripheral and acquiring messages orreports from these peripherals and sending them to the

    ground.

    COM ACARS FAULT

    When there is an ATSU failure, the message COM ACARSFAULT appears on the E/WD without aural warning ormaster light or local warning and no System Displaypage is called.

    ACARS STBY

    When the data-link function is lost or unavailable orwhen there is an ATSU Router Configuration Failure,the right memo ACARS STBY appears.

    ACARS MSG

    When an AOC message is received, the right memo ACARSMSG appears.

    ACARS CALL

    When a call request message is received, the rightmemo ACARS CALL appears.

    VHF3 VOICE

    When VDR3 is not available for data transmission, theright memo VHF3 VOICE appears.

    COMM MENU

    The Air-Ground communications functions and servicesare active as soon as their initialization is complete.

    COMM INITThe initialization (through COMM INIT menu) isconsidered as completed when the ATSU has received avalid Aircraft Registration Number (ARN), AirlineIdent and scan mask.The ARN and Airline Ident are used in the air/groundcommunication as aircraft addressing means.The VHF3 SCAN MASK gives an ordered list of authorizedservice providers usable for data communications.

    VHF3 DATA MODEThe VHF3 DATA MODE menu displays the various regionswhich can be selected. Each region is associated witha datalink service provider and a frequency.

    VHF3 VOICE DIRECTORYThe VHF3 VOICE DIRECTORY allows the followingfunctions:

    - to display a voice frequency directory,- to activate one of these frequencies,- to select the data mode,- to activate the voice frequency contained in

    the last received company call,- to manually enter a frequency.

    COMM MENU (CONTD)

    COMM STATUSThe COMM STATUS menu is used to verify thecommunication status of ATSU.

    - The Air / Ground communication media status :VHF3 and SATCOM (if installed) and

    - the communication (router) status of theon-board peripherals.

    MAINTENANCE STATUSThe MAINTENANCE menu is composed of three functions:

    - TEST which allows to test the link between thecommunication media (VHF3 and SATCOM) and theground,

    - STATISTICS permits media and router statistics(number of up linked messages, number of downlinked messages, ) and

    - AUDIT to print out exchanged messages per mediaand router depending on selection.

    Note : If ON is selected all exchanged messages duringthe flight will be printed.

    INITIALIZATION PROCEDURE OF THE ATSU ROUTER

    This procedure, called Initialization of the ATSURouter, enables the Air-Ground communicationsfunctions and services of the ATSU to be activated.Three essential parameters are required :

    - a valid flight ident,- an A/C Registration Number (ARN) and- a valid scan mask.

    Otherwise, the ACARS STBY green memo is displayed onthe ECAM .

    The VHF3 VOICE DIRECTORY page serves :- To activate one of the displayed frequencies

    configured by the AOC application,- to activate the voice frequency requested by

    the ground (CO CALL),- to manually enter a frequency and- to go back to data mode.

    The OPS frequency 132.225 is activated.The ATSU now controls the VHF3 frequency in VOICE mode.On the RMP, the ACARS indication stays in view in theactive window.In this mode, communication tests with the ground canbe done.
