The IBM SureMark Fiscal Printers are high-performance, high-function printers. As shown in Table 1, theseprinters are available in several models:v Models Kx3 features a thermal customer receipt (CR) station and an impact document insert (DI)

station. The dual printheads enable quiet, fast printing at the customer receipt station while providing thecapability to print multipart forms through the document insert station.

v Models Kx5 are identical to the Kx3 models; however, they have no DI station.

2 4610 - Kxx Fiscal Printer Service Supplement

  • v Models Kx4 have both the DI station with impact printhead, and the MICR.

The following features are supported:v Integration Panelv 40-Character VFD Post Extensionv RS-485 interface cables distributed and integrated lengthsv RS-232 interface cables three lengthsv USB interface cable - one lengthv Cash drawer (Models KBx, KCx,KDx, KFx, KGx, and KJ4 only)

The 4610 SureMark Fiscal Printer Models KxxThe model Kxx printers are modified versions of the IBM 4610 SureMark Printer. The bottom part of thetop cover has been modified to accept two screws that lock down the cover. These screws are hiddenbeneath the fiscal interface assembly. The fiscal interface assembly must be removed to gain access tothe screws to remove the top cover. This change distinguishes the 4610 Fiscal Printer from the 4610 TIxversions of the printer.

Note: The 4610 - Kxx Fiscal Printers have no physical journal station. Electronic journaling in theprinter eliminates the need to store paper journal tapes.

Electrostatic dischargeAttention: Electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage can occur when there is a difference in chargebetween the part, the product, and the service person. No damage occurs if the service person and thepart being installed are at the same charge level as the product.

ESD damage preventionWhenever a service action involves physical contact with logic cards, modules, back-panel pins, or otherESD-sensitive (ESDS) parts, the service person must be connected to an ESD common ground point onthe product through the ESD wrist strap and cord.

The ESD ground clip can be attached to any frame ground, ground braid, green wire ground, or the roundground prong on the AC power plug. Coax or connector outside shells can also be used.

Handling removed cardsLogic cards removed from a product must be placed in ESD protective containers. No other object shouldbe allowed inside the ESD container with the logic card. Attach all tags or reports that must accompanythe card to the outside of the ESD container.

  • Security switchAs the fiscal logic assembly is moved out of the bottom cover, the security switch A opens. The openswitch sets a logic condition that prevents the fiscal printer from operating until a technical intervention ismade.

Important: The security switch detects the open cover and puts the printer in intervention mode even ifthe fiscal printer is not powered. If the security switch cable is not attached to the logic cardduring reassembly, the printer will not operate.

    1. The security switch connector B should be disconnected form the logic card when the fiscal logicassembly housing is opened as described in Fiscal seal securing the fiscal firmware PROM andelectronic journal.

    2. Disconnect the two small screws C holding the security switch to the inside top cover of the fiscallogic assembly. The screws are held in place by washers on the bottom of the switch.

    3. To reassemble, follow these steps in reverse order.

Fiscal seal securing the fiscal firmware PROM and electronic journal

AttentionRemoving the covers to access logic card components requires breaking the fiscal seal andremoving the fiscal seal screw that secures the covers in place to prevent tempering.

    1. Refer to Figure 19 on page 30, break the fiscal seal and remove the security screw G that securesthe covers to the logic card. The cover Cprotecting the Fiscal Program (EPROM) D and theElectronic Journal (MFD) B chip are secured in place by the fiscal seal on the logic card. The MFDcover also is secured by screws that require removing the logic card from its metal base plate toaccess. Refer to Fiscal logic card and MFD on page 30 for that procedure.

    2. The cover over the connections at the rear of the logic card H has notches that fit into holes on thelogic card, but it is not secured to the card and may be removed to gain access to the logic cardcomponents that are accessible though the tailgate I.

Fiscal logic card and MFD1. While the EPROM cover can be removed after removing the fiscal seal, the MFD cover B additionally

is secured by two screws connected to the bottom of the logic card C, which must be removed toaccess.

    2. To remove the logic card, refer to Figure 20 on page 31 and unscrew the four long standoffs Dattaching the logic card to its base plate F.

    3. As shown inFigure 20 on page 31, remove the four screw lock standoffs G securing the two EIA-232ports to the tailgate.

    4. Slide the logic card out from the tailgate base plate.5. A plastic shield E separates the logic card from the metal base plate. Remove the shield and set it

aside when removing the logic card.

Note: Remember to replace the plastic shield under the logic card before reassembling.6. Turn the logic card over and remove the two self-tapping screws A securing the MFD (cover and

journal card) to the card. The MFD is epoxied into the cover to prevent tampering and is connected tothe logic card by pin connectors that are difficult to see as you remove the cover.

  • Reassembling the logic card componentsImportant: Care should be used in reassembling the logic card components since they are the most

sensitive parts of the KJ4. Not completing each step properly could result in the fiscalassembly not functioning properly or completely failing to operate because the tamperingsafeguards were not reassembled properly or in accordance with local fiscal regulations.

    1. Reconnect the MFD module to the logic card and reattach the two screws that keep it in place.2. If you are replacing only the main logic card, remember to remove the EPROM module from the old

card and install it on the new logic card.3. Reposition the plastic shield on the metal base plate and slide the logic card assembly back into place

with the tailgate connectors in their proper slots on the base plate.4. Check to make sure the push buttons A (see Figure 21 ) that extend through the tailgate work freely.5. Reattach the four long standoffs holding the logic card and plastic shield to the metal base plate.6. Reconnect the four screw lock standoffs securing the EIA-232 ports to the assembly.7. Reassemble the security switch mechanism (if necessary) and connect the tamper switch wires to the

connector on the main logic board, reversing the process described in Security switch on page 29.8. Replace the cover of the fiscal logic assembly being careful to properly seat the pins of the MFD

assembly (which is epoxied to the underside of the cover) into its connector on the logic board bypressing down firmly.

    9. Replace the four screws that secure the logic assembly cover.

How to use the parts catalogThis parts listing contains reference drawings and a corresponding index for all field replaceable parts. Theindex provides the part number, the quantity required (units), and a description of the part.

Listed below is additional information about the parts assembly index.SIMILAR ASSEMBLIES

If two assemblies contain a majority of identical parts, they are broken down on the same list.Common parts are shown by one index number. Parts specific to one or the other of theassemblies are listed separately and identified by description.

AR (As Required) in the Units column indicates that the quantity is not the same for all machines.NP (Non-Procurable) in the Units column indicates that the part is non-procurable and that the

individual parts or the next higher assembly should be ordered.NR (Not Recommended) in the Units column indicates that the part is procurable, but not

recommended for field replacement, and that the next higher assembly should be ordered.R (Restricted) in the Units column indicates the part has a restricted availability.INDENTURE

The indenture is marked by a series of dots located before the parts description. The indentureindicates the relationship of a part to the next higher assembly. No Dot Main assembly
