10 How does our preaching the good news reect god-ly justice? First of all, it is only right that we do what wecan to help others gain salvation. Consider again the il-

lustration of being rescued from a sinking ship. Safe ina lifeboat, you would surely want to help others who arestill in the water. Similarly, we have an obligation towardthose who are still struggling in the waters of this wick-ed world. True, many reject our message. But as long as Je-hovah continues to be patient, we have the responsibili-ty to give them the opportunity to attain to repentanceand thus come in line for salvation.2 Peter 3:9.

11 By preaching the good news to all whom we meet, wedisplay justice in another important way: We show impar-tiality. Recall that God is not partial, but in every nationthe man that fears him and works righteousness is ac-ceptable to him. (Acts 10:34, 35) If we are to imitate Hisjustice, we must not prejudge people. Instead, we shouldshare the good news with others regardless of their race,social status, or nancial standing. We thus give all whowill listen an opportunity to hear and respond to the goodnews.Romans 10:11-13.

How We Treat Others12 We can also exercise justice by treating others the way

Jehovah treats us. It is all too easy to sit in judgment of others, criticizing their faults and questioning their mo-tives. But who of us would want Jehovah to scrutinize ourmotives and shortcomings in a merciless manner? That isnot how Jehovah deals with us. The psalmist observed: If

errors were what you watch, O Jah, O Jehovah, who couldstand? (Psalm 130:3) Are we not grateful that our justand merciful God chooses not to dwell on our failings?

(Psalm 103:8-10) How, then, should we treat others?13 If we appreciate the merciful nature of Gods justice,

we will not be quick to judge others in matters that real-ly do not concern us or that are of lesser importance.In his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus warned: Stop judg-ing that you may not be judged. (Matthew 7:1) Accord-ing to Lukes account, Jesus added: Stop condemning,

and you will by no means be condemned.1

(Luke 6:37) Jesus showed his awareness that imperfect humans have atendency to be judgmental. Any of his listeners who werein the habit of harshly judging others were to stop it.

14 Why must we stop judging others? For one thing,our authority is limited. The disciple James reminds us:One there is that is lawgiver and judgeJehovah. So James pointedly asks: Who are you to be judging yourneighbor? (James 4:12; Romans 14:1-4) In addition, oursinful nature can so easily render our judgments un-fair. Many attitudes and motivesincluding prejudice, in-jured pride, jealousy, and self-righteousnesscan distortthe way we see fellow humans. We have further limita-tions, and reecting on these should restrain us from be-ing quick to nd fault with others. We cannot read hearts;nor can we know all the personal circumstances of oth-ers. Who, then, are we to impute wrong motives to fel-low believers or to criticize their efforts in Gods service?

How much better it is to imitate Jehovah by looking forthe good in our brothers and sisters rather than focusingon their failings!

15 What about our family members? Sadly, in todaysworld some of the harshest judgments are handed downin what should be a haven of peacethe home. It is notuncommon to hear about abusive husbands, wives, orparents who sentence their family members to a con-stant barrage of verbal or physical abuse. But viciouswords, bitter sarcasm, and abusive treatment have noplace among Gods worshipers. (Ephesians 4:29, 31; 5:33;6:4) Jesus counsel to stop judging and stop condemn-ing does not cease to apply when we are at home. Recall

that exercising justice involves treating others the way Je-hovah treats us. And our God is never harsh or cruel indealing with us. Rather, he is very tender in affection to-

ward those who love him. (James 5:11) What a marvelousexample for us to imitate!

Elders Serving for Justice Itself16 All of us have a responsibility to exercise justice, but

elders in the Christian congregation especially have a re-sponsibility in this regard. Notice the prophetic descrip-tion of princes, or elders, recorded by Isaiah: Look! A king will reign for righteousness itself; and as respectsprinces, they will rule as princes for justice itself. (Isaiah32:1) Yes, Jehovah expects elders to serve in the interestsof justice. How can they do this?

17 These spiritually qualied men are well aware that jus-tice, or righteousness, requires that the congregation bekept clean. At times, elders are obliged to judge cases of se-rious wrongdoing. When doing so, they remember thatdivine justice seeks to extend mercy if at all possible. They thus try to lead the sinner to repentance. But what if thesinner fails to manifest genuine repentance despite suchefforts to help him? In perfect justice, Jehovahs Word di-

rects that a rm step be taken: Remove the wicked manfrom among yourselves. That means expelling him fromthe congregation. (1 Corinthians 5:11-13; 2 John 9-11) Itsaddens the elders to have to take such action, but they recognize that it is necessary in order to protect the mor-al and spiritual cleanness of the congregation. Even then,they hope that someday the sinner will come to his sens-es and return to the congregation.Luke 15:17, 18.

an iron yoke on your neck untilhe has annihilated you.

49 Jehovah will raise upagainst you a distant nation, afrom the end of the earth; it willpounce like an eagle, b a nationwhose language you will not un-derstand, c 50 a nation erce inappearance that will show no re-gard to the old or favor to theyoung. d 51 They will eat theoffspring of your livestock andthe fruitage of your ground un-til you have been annihilated.They will not leave any grain,new wine or oil, young cattle or
