"If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things" John 3:12

Since most Christians are theoreti-cally Trinitarians and practical monothe-ists, the Feast of the Holy Trinity, might strike most of us as a bit esoteric. The Early Church came by its Trinitarian theology through bitter controversy. Even the draft-ers of the current Book of Common Prayer, back in the 1970's, sought to number the season after the Pentecost, rather than Sundays after Trinity, as a way of celebrating the missionary aspect of the Church, rather than living in the glow of the Triune God. Now that the dust of controversy has settled, somewhat, since the '70's, or even from the times of the Early Church, we celebrate the mystery of the one, and equal, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Once we have exhaust-ed our stock of shamrocks, equilateral triangles, and three-ring pretzels, we are still left with mystery. How to break through this seemingly impossible doctrine of the Church? How about a more personal model to understand God? The Jew-ish mystical writer, Martin Buber describes an eighteenth century eastern European movement in Judaism, called Hasidism. Hasidic masters, the movement's leaders, emphasized truths that personalized God. The Lord was close to His people. One could talk to Him, argue with Him, yell at Him. God laughed and wanted His people to laugh. God danced and di-rected angels in their holy dance. Amid the surrounding tragedy of perse-cution and pogroms, Hasidic Jews found joy in their God. Opportunities For Worship during JuneThe month of June will see us celebrate three prayer book holy days, along with our usual weekend liturgies and mid-week healing services.

We will begin on June 12th, with the Feast of Saint Barnabas, the apostle. This feast serves as a reminder of the life and selfless ministry of Barnabas, on behalf of the Early Church. June 24th, a Saturday this year, allows us to offer the eucharist commemorat-ing the Nativity of John the Bap-tist, just six months before the nativity of John's cousin, Jesus of Nazareth. Our June celebrations end on the 28th, as we remember those "pillars of the Church," Peter and Paul, and their minis-tries to the Jewish-Christian and Gentile communities.

These services will all be offered at 10:00 am. in the parish church, and we urge those interested in these lives of the saints, to come and join us for the Holy-Eucha-rist.

If you think You can bring Your people back into the fold by making them suffer, then I, Leib, son of Rachel, swear to You that You will not succeed. So why try? Save Your children by giving them joy, by delivering them. By doing it this way, You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.Buber doesn’t tell us if God answered the Rebbe Leib, but we know the tone of his prayer, in that it is this same spirit that ap-peared on the American musical stage, as the milkman, Tevye, in “Fiddler on the Roof.” God invites His people to be “fiddlers on the roof,” to sing and dance even when tragedy strikes. He is the God who is there even in trag-edy, because tragedies don’t last forever. This Hasidic spirit should be a part of our celebration of the Holy Trinity. It is not enough to proclaim God as Trinity, to worship the Persons three in one. There must also be joy and laughter and dancing. That spirit is already present in the poetry of our creeds. When we recite the profession of faith every Sunday, wee should listen closely to the words we pray. They almost break into song trying to describe our God. Jesus is praised as “God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made.” Hear the music as we praise the Holy Spirit, “the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.” The creed’s language echoes our human joys. A baby’s birth brings us joy, and we rejoice in the Word

made flesh. A sunset’s flaming beauty lights our hearts, and we take fire from the glory of Father, Son, and Spirit. When our faith speaks of God it looks for words of light and color. The Trinity is a mystery, not to weigh us down, but to lift us up. In our text from John’s ac-count of the Gospel, we are pre-sented with story of Nicodemus coming to visit Jesus during the night, rather than in the clarity of the daylight. As a seeker of the Almighty, Nicodemus thought he knew the Creator, but as he listened to Jesus, he heard the good news again, for the first time. However, his fear of stepping out in faith, fear of being ostracized from the community because of his belief in Jesus, and even worse, his fear of being wrong, caused Nicodemus to doubt the message of this itinerant rabbi from Nazareth. When Jesus asked him, “Are you a teacher of Is-rael, and yet you do not understand these things?” Nicodemus was cut to very heart of his faith. Some-times when we think that we have all the answers, contained in our “faith jar,” we are reluctant to place one more item in it, for fear of hav-ing to disturb our already worked out notions. Sometimes we forget that we need to laugh, to be joyful, and to dance— that life is entirely a rela-tionship lived out in God’s time and in God’s love. And yes, sometimes words fail us, and we are silent before our God. It is not the silence of the pained or the stricken, how-ever; it is the silence of wonder and admiration. God’s joy and delight is eternal, but it is through His life that we celebrate the creation of which we have been called to be His stewards.

This, then, is our God—Father, Son, and Spirit. He rejoices with us and invites our song. We praise Him here and every day. The joy is ours daily. We can pray the words of the ancient Christian poem-prayer called the Lorica, attrib-uted to Saint Patrick: I bind unto myself today the strong Name of the Trinity’, By invocation of the same, The Three in One, and One in Three. As “fiddlers on the roof,” we give voice to our belief in the loving God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen. M.W.G.+

“Holy Father, great Creator, source of mercy

love and peace!”Our Lord commanded us to baptize in the name of the Father of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. In baptism, then, we profess faith in the Creator, in the only-begotten Son and in the gift which is the Spirit. There is one Creator of all things, for in God there is one Father from whom all things have their being. And there is one only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom all things exist. And there is one Spirit, the gift who is in all. So all follow their due or-der, according to the proper operation of each: one power, which brings all things into being, one Son, through whom all things come to be, and one gift of perfect hope. Nothing is wanting to this flawless union: in Father, Son and Holy Spirit, there is infinity of endless being, perfect reflection of the divine image, and mutual enjoyment of the gift. Our Lord has described the purpose of the Spirit's presence in us. Let us listen to his words: "I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. It is to your ad-vantage that I go away; if I go, I will send you the Advocate." And also: I will ask the Father and he will give you another Counselor to be with you for ever, the Spirit of truth. He will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine."From among many of our Lord's sayings, there have been chosen to guide our understanding, for they reveal to us the intention of the giver, the nature of the gift and the condition for its reception. Since our weak minds cannot comprehend the Father or the Son, we have been given the

Holy Spirit as our intermediary and advocate, to shed light on that hard doctrine of our faith, the incarnation of God.We receive the Spirit of truth so that we can know the things of God. In order to grasp this, con-sider how useless the faculties of the human body would become if they were denied their exercise. Our eyes cannot fulfill their task without light, either natural or artificial; our ears cannot react without sound vibrations, and in the absence of any odor our nostrils are ignorant of their func-tion. It is the same with the human soul. Unless it absorbs the gift of the Spirit through faith, the mind has the ability to know God but lacks the light necessary for that knowledge. This unique gift which is in Christ is offered in its fullness to everyone. It is everywhere available, but it is given to each in proportion to our readi-ness to receive it. Its presence is the fuller, the greater our desire to be worthy of it. This gift will remain with us until the end of the world, and will be our comfort in the time of waiting. By the favors it bestows, it is the pledge of our hope for the future, the light of our minds, and the splen-dor that irradiates our understanding.

African Team Ministries to be Here!!

The Sundays of June 4 and June 11, will see us welcome the Mission of the African Team Ministries, once again to Saint Augus-tine of Canterbury Church.

The African Team Ministries is an outreach work sponsored by the Churches and dioceses of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, to name a few, as they offer indigenous gifts and wares for sale in the United States. The money made from these sales goes to aid the ministry and mission of these churches and dio-ceses, as they seek to teach and spread the Gospel throughout Africa. Please take a minute and look over these moderately priced items, with graduations, weddings, maybe even simply a summer gift to family or friends coming up, your purchase will help in securing the Anglican Church in Africa.

Sunday School in Recess

Life Line Screening, a leading provider of community-based preventive health screenings, is pleased to offer a preventive health event at St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church on June 23rd. Five screenings will be offered that scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries which is a leading cause of stroke; abdominal aortic aneurysms which can lead to a ruptured aorta; hard-ening of the arteries in the legs which is a strong predictor of heart disease; atrial fibrillation or irregu-lar heart beat which is closely tied to stroke risk; and a bone density screening, for men and women, used to assess the risk of osteoporosis. Register for a Well-ness Package which includes 4 vascular tests and os-teoporosis screening from $149 ($139 with our mem-ber discount). All five screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete. In order to register for this event and to receive a $10 discount off any package priced above $129, please call 1-888-653-6441 or visit; www.lifelinescreening.com/community-partners.

Life Line Screening Coming to St. Augustine

Story Hour" and Nursery Care

With the Sunday School in recess, we will be once again offering the "Story Hour," during the 10:00 service, throughout the summer, as well as nursery care in the education wing, beginning on Sunday June 4, 2017. The driving force behind the "Story Hour" is the opportunity for individuals in the congregation to step up and share their story of the good news of God in their lives. We are asking parishioners to sign-up and bring their favorite Bible story to share with our young people, who may be too young top sit through the Sunday Eucharist. We will also have youth Group members to help with arts and crafts, to illustrate the many stories of the Holy Scriptures for this next generation of Christians. If this is your cup of tea, why not sign up this coming Sunday? We even heard that the Rector has taken a turn at this teaching as well—and yes, the children did come back the next week, too!

Our Church School will be in recess for the summer, following the celebration on the Feast of Pentecost June 4th. The young people and teachers will be put-ting together a beautiful setting for our annual “Pentecost Event,” as they decorate the Parish Hall for this Feast of the Holy Spirit. Our special thanks are offered to Burke Neely, our superintendent; Linda Jones, Stephanie Downey, Joanne Reinhart, and, our teachers and aides, as we manifested the joy of the Holy Spirit each and every Sunday, with our young people. We are also grateful for those folks who gave so freely of their time in making some of our “spe-cial projects,” a time of outreach and caring. We once again thank Bunny Frey and Carol Davis, for all their efforts in making the Honduras Market Place Day, back in April, such a success for sup-port of the orphanage/school of El Hogar, in the Diocese of Honduras. We are looking forward to next year already, as Mrs. Neely is offering projects which will be not only for our Sunday School, but for the whole parish as well. Keep an eye on this space for upcoming events, as we look ahead to the Sunday School Year 2017-2018. Blessings to all who have made this year such a time of faith-building for us all!

On Saturday May 20 , I represented our Chapter of the Daughters of the King at the Board Meet-ing. The meeting was held at the Church of the Advent in Dunellon. We celebrated Eucharist and had a delicious meal. I was fortunate to meet several other Daughters from around the Dio-cese. After the Board Reports, each Chapter rep-resentative gave an update. I was happy to report that our Chapter recently hosted the SE Deanery Meeting and that we admitted 4 new Daughters this winter. The Daughters of the King appreci-ate your continued support.Thank you, Nancy Kelly

Bible School The Vacation Bible School for 2017 is set for June 12th through the 16th, from 9:00 am until 12 noon, with lunch following each day's sessions.

Our theme this year will be, "Rome: with Paul and the Underground Church, " and promises to be as exciting and interesting as our previous vacation Bible schools. Our program will tell the story of St. Paul and his missionary work among the people of the City of Rome, in the mid-first century. We are still looking again to members of the congregation who might be able to give of their time and talent, to make this year's ver-sion of the VBS a time to celebrate.

For more information you are asked to either call the parish office, (772)770-3494; or on the web, staugustinevero.com, or Julie Dossantos, at [email protected]. The school is open for boys and girls from ages 3-10, so bring your children your grandchildren, your neighbor's children, bring them all for a most memorable week.

The seventh annual "Man-UP' Conference is set for the weekend of June 23-24, at the Gifford Youth Activity Center-GYM, 4875 43rd Avenue, Vero Beach.
