OUTGOING PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS 2012

Kwaku Marfo, PharmD., BCPS

Good Evening Colleagues: Welcome to the 47th Annual Installation Dinner Program of the New York City Society of Health-system Pharmacists here at the luxurious Bridgewaters. It is my great joy, honor and pleasure to be here with you this evening to celebrate yet another occasion of installation of new officers, accomplishments and recognize some of the extraordinary individuals in our chapter. First and foremost, I like to thank everyone for being here this evening, most importantly for your support and attendance at the various events we’ve held throughout the year. From our monthly educational programs, community outreach events and networking social events, it is the commitment and dedication each one of you as a member provides which helps to sustain the chapter. Without your individual contributions, there would not be a New York City Chap-ter that is the reason why for the first time this year we are awarding our Outstanding Members. I would like you all to join me in congratulating this year’s award nominees, Dean Patrick Aquino and Nicole Glasser for their commitment to the society over the past year while fulfill-ing their duties as active members. I would like to see each and every member in this room be recognized for this award in the coming years. I urge you all to get involved, you do not need to be on the Board or on a committee to get involved. I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to my family, supervisors, mentors, friends, all the Board members, Committee Chairs, and State Liaisons. I would like to begin my inventory of thanks with our Past President, Monica Mehta, between school and work still sacrificed time out of her busy schedule to attend the meetings and was readily at my disposal for help and advice throughout my term. Believe me; it was intimidating to follow her as Chapter President, but the unconditional mentorship and support she provided elevated me to her level. To Joe Pinto and Leila Tibi for staying close to coach and counsel on matters relating to public relation initiatives, legislation, constitution and bylaws. To, Elizabeth Palillo, soon-to-be President, thank you for being a team player and a trooper over the past year. Liz, you’ve done a superb job planning our monthly continuing education (CE) programs. I envision great things happening here in the City Society for years to come and I wish you all the best as you become our next President. To Yi Guo, Chapter Treasurer, wow,

great financial management skills. Thank you for your keen financial acumen to ensure our fi-nances was in healthy condition despite the current economic turmoil. To Mittal Sutaria, Chap-ter Secretary, thank you for disseminating the Board meeting minutes in a timely manner. To the dynamic trio, Amisha Arya, Mary Choy and Shu Jing, our Directors-at-Large, my sin-cere appreciation for your leadership in ensuring each of your committees were successful with the projects they took on throughout the year. To the Industry Relations Committee, Kanika Ballani, Erica Zak, Mittal Sutaria, Diana Esaian, and Aniwaa Owusu Obeng for putting together a stellar workshop on Collaborative Drug Therapy Management. To the finest Membership Committee, chaired by our committed and fearless leader Vickie Powell and her team of stars; Alanna Farrell, Elizabeth Chiu Ha, Shalini Dosi, Lena Ngai and Maurice Harbon for their initiatives to increase our membership. Cudos! To the Special Projects Committee Michele Kaufman, Kenny Ng and Yolanda Rodriguez for working together to provide a showering half-day CE symposium with some of the timely top-ics such as Drug Shortages and New Drugs Update. To the Student Relations Committee Lana Borno, Tran Tran and Sami Ebtesam for your leadership and drive to advance the visibility of our student and resident members’ skills and talents through our monthly Clinical Pearl Series, Poster Presentations and clinical writing vignettes for the Chapter Bulletin! Great Work!

To the Public Relations Committee Suzanna Gim, Charrai Byrd, Noor Fattouh, Anthony Pham, Frances Cheng, Joe Pinto and Leila Tibi thank you also for your leadership to get the NYCSHP name out to the NYC community through your efforts with the Adopt-A-Highway Clean-ups, organizing and leading the Today Show appearance, and participating in charity walks support-ing breast cancer and AIDS awareness and education. To the Legislative Committee Jason Chheda, Aniwaa Owusu and Esther Huang for your in-sightfulness in drafting four resolutions which were all adopted by the State Council at the past Annual Assembly and Delegates Meeting in Saratoga Springs. To the Clinical Pharmacy and Resident Sub-Committees, Andras Farkas, Anna Vichiendilok-kul, Mittal Sutaria, Jerry Altshuler, Tamara Iskhakova, Diana Esaian, Shalini Dosi, Michele Kaufman, Lana Borno, Antony Pham, Kanika Ballani, Jason Babby, Rachel Sussman, Aniwaa Owusu Obeng, and Noor Fatouh, thank you for getting the “brains” together in sharing ideas on best practices and clinical protocols. Two heads are better than one!

To the Constitution and ByLaws Committee Leila Tibi, Erica Zak and Esther Huang, thank you for revising and updating our constitution, policy and procedures manual. To the members of the Supportive Personnel Committee: Ruth Cookie and Latoya Davis thank you for re-invigorating our partnership with the Sanford Brown Institute in providing speakers for phar-macy related topics to keep the enthusiasm of our potential technician members. To the Installa-tion Dinner Program Committee, Yi Guo, Erica Nunes, Janna Roitman, and Kanika Ballani for working together to make this evening possible. To the Bulletin Editor, for outstanding work you’ve done to edit and publish four excellent Bulletin Newsletters that contained cutting-edge clinical information, but also newsworthy chapter items. I can’t brag about the chapter website without mentioning the tech savvy duos, Wilson Tam and Frances Cheng for their innovative ideas in creating an astounding website, maintaining our Constant Contact and Gmail accounts to improve chapter communications. And last but not least, to the State Liaisons, Mark Sinnett, Ted Friedman, and Fran Jordan, thank you for your commitment to this organization, but most importantly for the wisdom you shared with us over the past year to ensure that our chapter headed down the right path. I also like to thank the staff at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital for allowing us to host the Board Meetings in their conference room and to Janna Roitman, Leila Tibi and Joe Pinto for the din-ner ideas. My sincere thanks to everyone, even if I did not name you individually, who helped make this past year a success. I feel very lucky to have worked with all of you. I pledge my ongoing support to NYCSHP as I step in the new role as Immediate Past President and know that under the leadership of Elizabeth Palillo, the Society will continue working to-ward the realization of our vision statement, “to represent its members and advance pharmacy as an essential component of health care”.

NYCSHP PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS 2012

Elizabeth Palillo, Pharm.D. Good evening and welcome to the 47th Annual Installation Dinner for the New York City Soci-ety of Health-System Pharmacists. It is hard to believe that my year as president elect has come to an end already. First, I’d like to thank Amisha Arya and the Installation Dinner Committee members: Kanika Ballani, Erica Nunes, Janna Roitman and Yi Guo for planning such an amaz-ing evening. I know the memory of tonight will be something I cherish forever. As Yi and Amisha kindly sent me multiple reminders on submitting my speech, I procrastinated until the very end, a strategy I haven’t had to use since college. Anyone who knows me knows that I am hardly ever at a loss for words and often times need to be reminded to stop talking. But when choosing my words for tonight that part of my personality didn’t exactly take over. As I searched for the right words the first feeling that came to mind was gratitude. Thank you to everyone at Bronx Lebanon, especially Dr Kim, Mr Schiller, and Monica for en-couraging me to join NYCSHP 4 years ago. Not only did you get me to join but you had Joe Pinto make me the bulletin editor, so I could play an active role. Bronx Lebanon was my first hospital position that really helped me develop the passion I have for patient care today, so thank you. Thank you to my Continuum family, many of which are here tonight. You all have contributed to my growth and development as a health care professional and it has been a pleasure working with you all. Thank you to my family and friends who always support me in whatever endeavors I choose to pursue. Thank you to all of the leaders in our chapter who have inspired me. Leila, Joe, Monica, and Kwaku- the examples you have all set during your presidency have inspired me and given me the confidence to take on the role of president. I am sure I am leaving out many more people who I need to thank, but hopefully you know I am grateful for all of the support I get from you all. Over the past year, under the leadership of Kwaku, our chapter has truly done amazing things. Our monthly CE meeting attendance has continued to rise to an average of over 85 attendees each month and I could not be prouder. It is a great feeling to see all of you each and every month. This year’s AIDS walk team surpassed our fundraising goal of $2,000 with the support

of many of you here tonight. Our website has also grown out of its start up phase and has truly become a valuable resource to our members- thank you Wilson and Ray for all of the time you put into the website to make it so successful. It is with this exciting momentum that I am honored to serve as your next president. I know with the support of our board members that we will continue to succeed as a chapter. Some of my ideas for the next year include the development of a CE speakers directory of our members. This will help us showcase our own chapter experts while helping out the other chapters who may need a CE speaker. I am also interested in planning a Quad Chapter Softball game. Those of you who attended the Annual Assembly know how much fun we had at the In-dustry vs. Pharmacists softball game. A little competition is always a good thing. I also want to continue with new student programming ideas. The first of which would be an interview workshop. In this challenging economy, it is crucial our students can really nail their interviews and outshine other candidates. I know the year ahead will be challenging but with your support and enthusiasm I am more than ready to step up to the plate. Thank you all for your continued support of our chapter and enjoy the rest of your evening.
