was a 20th century managementconsultant who is principallyremembered as an evangelist for

quality and quality management, writing several influential books onthose subjects. He was the brother of

    Muri,Mura,Muda are traditional

Japanese term for an activity that iswasteful and doesn't add value or isunproductive, etymologically none + un-useful in practice or others. It is also a

key concept in the Toyota ProductionSystem(TPS)

    Waste reduction is an effective

    way to increase profitability.

Muri is a Japanese term for overburden, unreasonableness or absurdity, whichhas become popularized in the West by

its use as a key concept in the ToyotaProduction System(TPS) .

Muri can be avoided through standardizedwork.

To achieve this a standard condition or output

must be defined to assure effective judgmentof quality.

Then every process and function must bereduced to its simplest elements for

    examination and later recombination.

The process must then be standardized toachieve the standard condition.

This is done by taking simple work elements

Work Flow, or logical directions to betaken,

    Repeatable Process Steps and Machine

Processes, or Rational methods to getthere,

Tact Time, or reasonable lengths of timeand endurance allowed for a process.

Heightened employee morale (due toclose examination of ergonomics andsafety),

    higher quality, improved productivity, and

    Reduced costs.

Mura is traditional general Japaneseterm for unevenness, inconsistency inphysical matter or human spiritual

    condition.

Mura is avoided through Just In Timesystems which are based on little or noinventory, by supplying the productionprocess with the right part, at the righttime, in the right amount, and first-in,first out component flow. Just in Timesystems create a pull system in whicheach sub-process withdraws its needs

from the preceding sub-processes, andultimately from an outside supplier. When a preceding process does notreceive a request or withdrawal it does

    not make more parts.

The assembly line makes a request to,or pulls from the Paint Shop, whichpulls from Body Weld.

The Body Weld shop pulls from Stamping. At the same time, requests are going out

to suppliers for specific parts, for thevehicles that have been ordered bycustomers.

Small buffers accommodate minorfluctuations, yet allow continuous flow.

This type of system is designed tomaximize productivity by minimizingstorage overhead.

Muda is a traditional general Japaneseterm for an activity that is wasteful anddoesnt add value or is unproductive,

etymologically none + un-useful inpractice or others.

Muda has been given much greaterattention as waste than the other two

which means that whilst many Leanpractitioners have learned to see mudathey fail to see in the same prominencethe wastes of mura(unevenness) andmuri(overburden).

Overproduction: Overproduction happenseach time you engage more resources thanneeded to deliver to your customer. Forinstance, large batch production, because of

long change over time, exceeds the strictquantity ordered by the customer. Forproductivity improvement, operators are notrequired to produce more than the customer

needs. Extra parts will be stored and not sold.Overproduction is the worst muda because ithides or generates all others, especiallyinventory. Overproduction increases theamount of space needed for storing raw

Unnecessary transportation: Eachtime a product is moved it stands the risk ofbeing damaged, lost, delayed, etc. as well as

being a cost for no added value.Transportation does not make anytransformation to the product that theconsumer is supposed to pay for.

Inventory: Inventory, be it in the form ofraw materials, work-in-progress (WIP), orfinished goods, represents a capital outlay

that has not yet produced an income either bythe producer or for the consumer. Any of thesethree items not being actively processed toadd value is waste.

Motion: As compared to Transportation,Motion refers to the producer, worker or

equipment. This has significance to damage, wear and safety. It also includes the fixedassets and expenses incurred in theproduction.

Defects: Whenever defects occur, extracosts are incurred reworking the part, rescheduling production, etc.

Over-processing: Over-processing occursany time more work is done on a piece thanwhat is required by the customer. This alsoincludes using tools that are more precise,

    complex, or expensive than absolutely

Waiting: Whenever goods are not intransport or being processed, they are waiting. In traditional processes, a large part of an

individual product's life is spent waiting to beworked on.

An easy way to remember the 7

    wastes is TIMWOOD..T : Transportation

    I : Inventory

    M : MotionW: Wait

    O : Over-processing

    O : Over-production

    D : Defect
