Evolution From 1G to 4G
First Generation [1G] 1G refers to the first-generation of
wireless telephone technology was developed in 1970’s.
1G had two major improvements: the invention of the
microprocessor the digital transform of the control
link between the phone and the cell site.
Analog signal
Second Generation [2G] Around 1980’s Better quality & capacity –
More people could use there phones at the same time
Digital Signals – consist of 0’s & 1’s
The digital voice encoding allows digital error checking increase sound quality lowers the noise level
Going all-digital allowed for the introduction of digital data transfer SMS –“short message service” E-mail
Advantages of 2G
Disadvantages of 2G
Cell towers had a limited coverage area Jagged Decay curve• Abrupt dropped calls• Analog –gradual sound reduction
“Spotty” coverage
Third Generation [3G] Large capacity and broadband capabilities
Allows the transmission of 384kbps for mobile systems and up to 2Mbps
Increased spectrum efficiency –5Mhz A greater number of users that can be
simultaneously supported by a radio frequency bandwidth
High data rates at lower incremental cost than 2G–Global roaming
High input fees for the 3G service licenses Inefficient to meet needs of future high-
performance Multiple standards for 3G Require wider bandwidth Lack of coverage because it is still new
service
Reasons for new Research

4G combines following :- Faster and more reliable 100 Mb/s Lower cost than previous generations Multi-standard wireless system Bluetooth, Wired, Wireless Ad Hoc Networking IPv6 Core OFDM used instead of CDMA Potentially IEEE standard 802.11n Most information is proprietary
4G Hardware Ultra Wide Band Networks :Ultra
Wideband technology, or UWB, is an advanced transmission technology that can be used in the implementation of a 4G network.
Smart Antennas :: Multiple “smart antennas” can be employed to help find, tune, and turn up signal information
Comparison Between G and 4GMajor requirement driving architecture

Network Architecture Wide area cell-based Hybrid: Integration of wireless LAN (WiFi, Bluetooth) and wide area
Speeds 384 Kbps to 2 Mbps 20 to 100 Mbps in mobile mode Frequency Band Dependent on country or
continent (1800‐2400 MHz) Higher frequency bands (2-8 GHz)
Bandwidth 5-20 MHz 100 MHz (or more) Switching Design Basis Circuit and Packet All digital with packetized
voice Access Technologies W-CDMA, 1xRTT, Edge OFDM and MC-
CDMA (Multi Carrier CDMA) Forward Error Correction Convolutional rate 1/2, 1/3 Concatenated coding scheme

Component Design Optimized antenna design, multi-band adapters
Smarter Antennas, software multiband and wideband radios
IP A number of air link protocols, including IP 5.0
All IP (IPv6)

General 4G Services and Application
Localized/Personalized Information Organizational services Communications services and applications Entertainment services Mobile commerce (M-Commerce )
4G in IndiaBharti Airtel launched India's first 4G service, using TD-LTE technology, in Kolkata on April 10, 2012. Airtel 4G services are available in Kolkata, Delhi, Bangalore, Pune and Chandigarh RIL is launching 4G services through its subsidiary, Jio Infocomm. RIL 4G services are currently available only in Jamnagar.
