Chapter 1 What Causes DepressionIn recent times we have been plagued with a different kind of debilitating condition known as depression. To a lot of people, depression is an abstract illness that due to lack of information about it; many are quick to dismiss it as something that a weak person succumbs to. However, the truth of the matter is exactly opposite. Depression is a pernicious condition that can affect even the best of us. It does not respect any person based on profile, achievements or status in life. Because of this, it is important to understand and know the different causes of depression. At the onset, there is no one specific cause that can bring someone to depression. There are many triggers of depression that can affect an individual. In fact, there are circumstances that point towards the combination of a number of causes to trigger depression. The following are the common causes of depression. 1. Personality this type of trigger is more dependent on the makeup of an individual. If a person is over critical of himself or a perfectionist by default, that person is more likely to suffer from depression when the environment that engenders it is present. Also, people who have a low self-esteem are also candidates to depression because they are more likely to view things in a difficult way. 2. Genetic Factor People who have a family history of depression are more prone to suffer it themselves. Of course this is not a surefire prediction but it only goes to show that a persons family background gives an elevated tendency to fall prey to depression. 3. Postnatal Depression When a woman gives birth there are some changes in her body like hormonal levels and physical ones that could directly affect her way of thinking and proclivity to depression. The new responsibility of raising a child can also be daunting to a woman that it is considered as a postnatal depression in many spheres. 4. Bereavement When there are close family ties within; a death or loss in any member there from triggers depression. This is especially true even if the cause of death or loss is a natural one. 5. Medication just recently it has been found out that certain medications for acne or an antiviral drug known as interferon-alpha is a come on for depression. If any of your relatives or someone dear to you is undergoing medication; it is better to ask the physician if it can trigger depression. 6. Personal Conflict As human beings, we cannot avoid to be in contact with our fellowmen. Sometimes this interaction do not turn out to be as peaceful as we imagine it to be, hence a conflict arises. When a person is in conflict with another person, it can be a ripe situation for depression to kick in. 7. Addiction to substance Problems are ever present in life. The faster you admit and understand this, the better are your chances against depression. When a person resorts to taking drugs or alcohol consumption, you take the shortest route to depression. Alcohol is known as a strong depressant despite the fact that people resort to its use thinking that problems will drift away or out of memory in one way or another. 8. Serious Medical Condition undergoing a serious medical condition can start depression as a direct result or it can be trigger it indirectly. This happens when the individual suffering from such becomes worrisome or there is an associated chronic pain from that same medical condition. 9. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) this is a precursor of depression in that the body fails to adjust immediately in a change of weather. This is often associated with winter but recently, even summer weather has been included. When a person cannot cope quickly in the changes in weather, the depression that settles in is a reaction of the body.10. Smoking this may come as a surprise to many; because there are people who smoke and take the habit. Studies however, shows that those who are prone to depression are more likely to take up the habit. Smoking affects neurotransmitter activities inside the brain. This chemical imbalance opens up the individual to depression. 11. Thyroid Disease When a person suffers from the inability of the thyroid gland to produce enough thyroid hormones it is called as hypothyroidism. The thyroid hormone acts as a neurotransmitter which regulates the serotonin levels of an individual. The lack thereof, ushers depression. 12. Poor Sleeping Pattern the deprivation of sleep acts as a harbinger of depression due to the fact that the brain does not have enough time to replenish itself. The person is more irritable and susceptible to depressive behavior. 13. Social Media Abuse A 2010 study of people with the age range of 16 to 51 showed that too much use of the internet for chatting or social media like Facebook carried with it the potential of being more depressed. Also, it has been found out that due to the lack of personal interaction the individuals who are stuck in a virtual world had a hard time to cope or possess an unrealistic view of what the real world is. These are ingredients that can lead from moderate to severe depression. 14. Residence Believe it or not, it was published in the journal Nature that where you live may pose a threat to your proclivity to depression. It was explained in that journal that city dwellers have a higher instance of depression because of the external activities which are prevalent in living in the city compared to living in the country side. 15. Not enough Omega 3 Fatty Acids A Finnish study has shown that not having enough Omega 3s in your diet can have a direct effect on a person developing depression. This is because of the link that Omega 3 fatty acid has with controlling the level of serotonin in the body. It is important to know all these causes in order to better understand depression and how it starts. The tricky part is that any one cause can be a coupling to another cause in order to trigger depression. Hence, there is a need to be very careful in assessing each persons case. Chapter 2 THE COST of Depression

To some people depression can be a very controlling situation. It can affect many aspects of a persons life that oftentimes it is important to be aware of the costs that are associated with it. In this article we shall deal with the most common costs of depression that may often be overlooked. They are the following: Economic Depression as studied worldwide shows that the chunk of those who suffer from it are from the age range of 20s and 30s. The implication of this is that this range is where the workforce is mostly made up of. When a significant part of the workforce is affected by depression, the economic impact it creates is not only magnified but in a personal level, the best days of persons life is wasted through this pernicious depressive behavior. Health People who are already experiencing physical ailments may deteriorate even further when depression appears. It is because the individual will most likely fail to adopt measures to be well again. Exercise will be neglected; vices may be acquired like smoking and drinking. People who are depressed are more likely to become obese or develop type 2 diabetes. Social Isolation depressive behavior may also result to individuals who shy themselves away from friends and known companions. When this isolation becomes a habit, the ability of the individual to participate in activities which he or she previously favored suddenly drops down. Risk of Suicide There has been a study of people regarding suicide and it has shown results that the risk of suicide is more probable amongst those who are already suffering from depression. About two thirds of those who commit suicide, according to the study, are suffering from a form of depression. It is important to pay careful attention when a person is undergoing depression. On a side note, it has been said also that anti-depressant drugs have backfiring effect on teens and adolescents because they increase the incidence of suicidal behavior ( thoughts about suicide included). Family and Relationships Depression has a carryover effect most especially when it is the parents themselves who are suffering from depression. The depression is shared with the children and the breakdown of family and relationship of kin is very well affected. Data show that those couples who are in depression are likely candidates for divorce. Work relationships also suffer when depression is introduced in the work environment. Efficiency on the job is compromised as well as the fluidity of communication across different channels. This can lead to lower income and productivity. Chapter 3
