Career Portfolio Guide
The purpose of your career portfolio is to provide you the opportunity to conduct research
and to present information about a career that interest you, or a career about which you want to
know more about. As a result, you will learn the requirements necessary to pursue a career in
your chosen field. Your career portfolio should consist of two major components: an essay and a
presentation. For the essay portion, you will utilize the writing process to develop a well written
informative/explanatory piece for the first portion of your portfolio. As for the presentation
component, you will need to present your career as if you are currently a worker in that career.
Remember to be creative, and extremely knowledgeable about your career.
Essay Outline
I. Introduction (here you will name the chosen career interest, identify the career cluster
associated with the career, and list reasons why the career was chosen)
II. Training and Education (here you will discuss the requirements for specific training or
education needed to obtain a job in your chosen career interest, e.g., length of
training/school, military, type of school major or degree(s), etc.)
III. Work Environment (information such as indoors/outdoors, office or outside fieldwork,
type of dress for work)
IV. Salary, Growth Opportunities, and Job Outlook (here you will discuss the opportunities
for advancement and need for this type of career in the next 10 years)
V. Closing (this is where you will reflect on the research information and develop a
conclusion about whether you think you will continue to have an interest in your chosen
career after completing your research)
VI. Bibliography (references of resources used in the research process)
