esmscessential skills in the management of surgical cases
welcome letterDear friends and colleagues,
We are delighted to welcome you in Athens for the “4rd Essential Sklills in the Management of Surgical Cases - ESMSC” course which takes place in the Experimental - Research Center ELPEN between 9 and 11 May 2016. This initiative was purely designed for medical students and junior trainees, aiming to familiarize them with the systematic approach of a surgical patient.
EESMSC (esmsc.gr) is an international initiative which combines a huge variety of surgical skills and aims to promote re-search in Medical Education, supported by ERC ELPEN. Its an intense SBL course aimed primarily at the undergraduate level. The unique perception of our model lies into the combination of basic knowledge with systematic methodology of Surgical Science and the acquisition of skills to deliver patients' care. The second unique part is the introduction of expensive, though promising in vivo experience which hopefully will drive students' initiative as well as expand their competence to effectively perform basic procedures and assist in theatre.
Curriculum CI4R is a brand new ergonomic combination of current classic In Vivo and Ex Vivo stations with high fidelity research modules which aim to discover more on how students should be motivated towards the hands-on skills. Currently we are proud to introduce the "4th Core" which introduces delegates to the "non-technical skills" and tries to enhance the ability of the delegates to engage earlier on with decision making and familiarize themselves with the "soft skills" principles ThThe 1st ESMSC ran with great success, as as a satellite symposium of the National Surgical Conference back in November 2014, set under the auspices of the Hellenic Surgical Society. The 2nd ESMSC expanded and reached the idea of an International Combined Applied Surgical Science and Wet lab Course.
WWe would like to thank Professor GC Velmahos for supporting this project, as well as all the Academics, Clinicians and Trainees from various prestigious universities of the world including the UK (Imperial College London, King’s College London, University College London, University of Leeds, Queen Mary University of London, Peninsula Medical School, University of Liverpool), USA (Harvard Medical School), AUB and Greece, who support with their presence this huge ini-tiative and motivate our delegates towards a surgical career.
With kind regards,

course descriptionICASSWEC ESMSC Curriculum “Cores Integrated fo(u)r Research” – a few words Sideris, Papalois et al.
UUndergraduate Surgical Education is becoming an essential element in the training of the future generation of safe and efficient surgeons. Currently, evolving technology and increasing demand for excellence in patient care, have led to-wards the reconsideration of surgical curriculum, and various Medical Schools are introducing Basic Surgical Training (BST) skills at an earlier stage. Essential Skills in the Management of Surgical Cases – esmsc, is an international, com-bined applied surgical science and wet lab course, designed to combine basic science knowledge, with case-based learning and BST in vivo and ex vivo modules, aimed specifically at the undergraduate level. Its an intense SBL course aimed primarily at the undergraduate level.
Curriculum CI4R (3rd Edition) is a brand new ergonomic combination of current classic In Vivo and Ex Vivo stations with high fidelity research modules which aim to discover more on how students should be motivated towards the hands-on skills. Currently we are proud to introduce the "4th Core" which introduces delegates to the "non-technical skills" and tries to enhance the ability of the delegates to engage earlier on with decision making and familiarise them-selves with the "soft skills" principles
In vivo dissections & Scoping on high fidelity simulation model, ex vivo stations including ORIF, suturing, USS guided central access, Dexterity skills, Lap Simulator, Wound debridement, small interactive workshops, consist some parts of this exciting 2-year old now initiave
MMedical Students report overall improvement in their confidence to approach a surgical patient, and the mean feed-back from both series was 9.50/10 (7-10, SD=0,86) and 8.61/10 (5-10, SD= 1.24). The overall ESMSC concept was posi-tively evaluated, with mean score of 9.41/10 (8-10, SD=0.72) and 8.94/10 (7-10, SD=1.1). In the out of 10 scale, dele-gates thought that esmsc should be incorporated as a feature of undergraduate surgical curriculum with mean score 9.86/10 (8-10, SD 0.43) and (9.58/10, 6-10, SD=0.91). On comparison between UK vs. Greek Medical Students reports, as well as between Year 3,4 vs. Year 5,6 Medical Student responses revealed no statistical significant difference petaining to any question (p>0.05)
Surgery is a rapidly evolving field of Medicine, hence involvement of students into Basic Surgical Training is essential. Simulation-based training is an efficient way towards the acquisition of basic surgical skills. Medical students seem to appreciate and seek any SBT opportunity in their undergraduate training years, and this is reflected in the ESMSC feed-back report from both younger as well as more senior students. What is more, students across different European Countries, appear to have similar views on needs for training and development needs.

esmsc Medical Education Research Group
We are delighted to introduce the “ESMSC Medical Education Research Group- eMERG”. eMERG is an international re-search network that aims to link health care professionals and Academics from various backgrounds, with Medical Students and Junior Doctors, in order to exchange views on Simulation-Based Education and produce novel work as part of the ICASSWEC – ESMSC Group.
The eMERG(roup) was founded by Sideris, Papalois et al. as part of an International Combined Applied Surgical Science and Wet lab course (ICASSWEC) Research Project called ESMSC, which is primarily funded from a research grant, supported by the Experimental & Research Centre of ELPEN, one of the most well reputed labs in Europe for animal model Research
WWe welcome Medical Students and Junior Trainees (SHO, StR level) from the UK, Greece and other countries to apply online for being part of this group. Initially there will be offered 3 places for Medical Students and 3 for SHO/StR level trainees, who will be actively involved in the research modules, with the upper purpose to produce novel work.
If you are interested all you need to do is to send your cv, as well as a statement of 300 words in which you summarize why you wish to be part of this project and what you aim to do through this collaboration. CVs and statements will be assessed by the Academic Leads of the eMERG and shortlisted delegates will attend a skype interview if needed.
AlAlong with your cv and statement, you can provisionally attach a research proposal based on the background of the clusters. The best proposal will be awarded a funded scholarship to be conducted as part of the esmsc in November 2016.
Successful applicants will be informed on the new planned studies and will be allocated to one of those. We hope that soon (November 2016) we will invite applicants to submit a novel idea on a study as part of the ESMSC which will be funded by ERC elpen as part of this Group. YYours sincerely,
