A WORD FROM FR. IVAN
This is the Fourth Sunday in Lent. We are right in the middle of Lent. Traditionally, this day is
known as Laetare Sunday, from the Latin word for the command “rejoice,” the first word in the
introductory antiphon for today’s Liturgy (based on the words of Isaiah 66:10).
Our Holy Father Pope Francis has spoken many times about the joy that one experiences when living out a life
based on an encounter with the Lord. In one instance he said, “The life of slumbering Christians is a sad life, it is
not a happy life. Christians must be happy, with the joy of Jesus.” Can you imagine how different the world
would be if we radiate the joy of the Gospel! Imagine how different things would be if the first words out of our
mouths upon meeting others were to be encouraging and hope-filled, rather than sullen and negative. Many
times we can change someone’s day with something as little as a smile.
The antiphon and the readings for today’s Mass both express the Church's joy in anticipation of the
Resurrection, which we will celebrate on April 21, and henceforth. You will notice at today’s masses, in
accordance with a long-standing Church tradition, that the priests will wear a lighter shade of purple (rose)
vestments, as a reminder that our salvation is closer to us than when Lent began.
Catechesis of the Neo-Catechumenal Way. I continue to invite you to come and listen to the preaching of the
Good News on Tuesdays and Fridays on the third floor in the Grade School Building at 7pm. There will also be
a catechesis on Sunday, April 7 at 6pm and on Sunday, April 14 (Palm Sunday) at 6pm.
Holy Hour Adoration. Come and spend a time of silence with the One who knows you well and wants to speak
to your heart. Prayer is the oxygen of our soul. Adoration is held every Thursday at 6pm in the church.
Stations of the Cross. Every Friday of Lent at 5pm (English), 5:30pm (Karenni) and 6:30pm (Spanish). Come
and live the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Healing Mass. A mass to give the Anointing of the Sick, will be held Tuesday, April 9 at 10:30am. The
Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick strengthens our soul and body in the midst of sickness and old age.
Fish Fry. The Lenten Fish Fry is once again here at St. Bernard’s, on Friday, April 12 from 5-7pm. Please be
sure to RSVP in the back of the Church if you would like to attend. You can also use the last page of the bulletin
to RSVP.
Apply for Marie Tschida Pranke Scholarship Funds St. Bernard’s invites all parishioners with children attending Catholic high schools to apply for a scholarship from
the Marie Tschida Pranke Scholarship Fund. This fund was initially established when Marie Tschida Pranke died.
The funds were originally distributed to students at St. Bernard High School until the school closed in 2010. The
amount of each award will be based on the number of applicants. The funds are sent directly to the Catholic high
school that your child will be attending. Please send a request to the parish office at 1160 Woodbridge St. or to the administrator at
[email protected]. Include the student’s name, parents’ name(s), Catholic high school name,
grade your child will be in for the 2018-19 school year. Requests should be submitted by May 13, 2019. Funds will
be sent to the high school when attendance is verified by the school in the fall. However, we will notify you of the
amount of the award by June 17.
