had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish. In the first forty days a

boy had been with him. But after forty days without a fish the boy’s parents

has told him that the old man was now definitely and finally salao, which is

the worst from the unlucky, and the boy had gone at their orders in another

boy which caught three good fishes the first week.

Ia adalah seorang kakek tua yang pergi memancing sendirian di sebuah perahu di

teluk Stream. Hingga hari ini ia telah memancing selama lebih dari delapan puluh

empat hari tanpa mendapatkan seekor ikan pun. Pada empat puluh hari pertama

seorang anak kecil menemaninya. Tapi, setelah lebih dari empat puluh hari tanpa

sama dengan laut, indah dan liar.

sungai tempat perahunya ditambatkan. ‘Aku bisa pergi denganmu lagi. Dulu

kita tidak pernah mendapatkan uang’.

‘Tidak,’ kata kakek tua itu. ‘Kamu telah bersama perahu yang beruntung,

tetaplah dengannya’.

‘Tapi, ingat bagaimana kamu pergi selama delapan puluh tujuh hari tanpa

mendapatkan ikan sementara kami berhasil menangkap banyak ikan besar

tiap hari selama tiga minggu.’

in through its open door. The old man leaned the mast with its

wrapped sail against the wall and the boy put the box and the other

gear beside it. The mast was nearly as long as the room of the shack.

The shack was made of the tough budshields of the royal palm which

are called guano and in it there was a bed, a table, one chair, and a

place on the dirt floor to cook with charcoal.

yang sudah lusuh dari atas tempat tidur dan menyelimuti seluruh

bagian belakang kursi hingga pundak kakek tua itu. Pundak yang

aneh, masih kuat walaupun sangat tua. Lehernya juga masih kuat

dan lipatan-lipatan kulitnya tidak tampak terlalu banyak, ketika dia

tertidur kepalanya tertunduk.

tambalannya menimbulkan corak jika tertimpa sinar matahari. Akan

tetapi, kepala kakek tua itu sudah tua sekali dan dengan matanya

terpejam seperti itu tak ada tanda-tanda kehidupan di wajahnya.
