Startling implications: Foremost, thegospel, not simply good newsbutthe good news, was preached in the

Old Testament. Second, it waspreached then just as in New

Testament times. There is no differencein the message itself.The problem was not with the message

but with the way it was heard.

Most people in Israel at the time ofJesus considered themselves to be ina good position before God.

They supported the temple by payingthe required tax and by offering the

appropriate sacrifices. They abstainedfrom unclean food, circumcised theirsons, kept the festival days and the

Sabbaths, and tried to keep the law.

The gospel is the power of God tosave all who believe.

Righteousness is based not on what

we do but on what Christ has donefor us, which we claim by faith. It is a

belief that grows from faith to faith(Rom. 1:17).

Through Christ we have redemption(bought back by paying for our sins),justification (cleared of guilt and

cleansed by grace), andforgiveness(forgetsour past sins).

in Jesus.

The new covenant is not new becausethe plan of salvation has always beenpredicated on the death of Christ, the

Lamb slain from the foundation of theworld(Rev. 13:8).

Its not really new (Lev. 19:18), exceptin that we are not just to love our

The decisive issue at the end of time is:Whom will we worship and obey?The God who made heaven and

earth,?Or the beast and his image?Obedience to the commandments

(including the Sabbath) through thefaith of Jesus signifies those who

remain faithful to the end. True religion

demands both faith and obedience.

We do not need to balance faithwith works in order to be saved.

Faith alone is sufficient, but it must

not be an intellectual faith as thedevils have, nor a presumptuous
