    The Everlasting GospelKey Text

    Jeremiah 31:3 NKJV

The Lord has appeared of old to

me, saying: Yes, I have loved youwith an everlasting love; thereforewith lovingkindness I have drawn

    you.

    The Everlasting GospelInitial Words

In our study of James, we havelooked at a number of issues con-nected with the gospel and made

    some comparisons with otherbiblical authors.

The Bible does not contradict itself, especially on something as basic assalvation. James fits this larger

picture of Gods plan of redemption.

The Everlasting Gospel1. The Gospel in the Old Testament

Hebrews 4:2 NIVFor we also have had the gospel

preached to us, just as they did; but

the message they heard was of novalue to them,

because those who heard did not

    combine it with faith.

    1. The Gospel in the Old TestamnetThe Good News

Startling implications: Foremost, thegospel, not simply good newsbutthe good news, was preached in the

Old Testament. Second, it waspreached then just as in New

Testament times. There is no differencein the message itself. The problem was not with the message

but with the way it was heard.

    1. The Gospel in the Old TestamnetThe Good News

God intervenes to save us; Heforgives our sins and puts enmityin

us toward sin so that we can bewilling and obedient(Isa. 1:19).

One (Jesus) died for the many, bore

their (our) iniquities, and justifies theundeserving.

    1. The Gospel in the Old TestamnetThe Good News

The new covenant is different from theold covenant because the law iswritten in the heart, and sins are

remember[ed] no more(Heb. 8:12).In short, forgiveness and the

new birth are a package: justificationand sanctification represent Godssolution to the sin problem.

The Everlasting Gospel2. The Gospel in the New Testament

Romans 1:16, 17 NKJVFor I am not ashamed of the gospelof Christ, for it is the power of God

to salvation to everyone whobelieves, for the Jews first and also

for the Greek. For in it therighteousness of God is revealed

from faith to faith; as it is written,

The just shall live by faith.

    2. The Gospel in the New TestamentThe Gospel Made Flesh

Most people in Israel at the time ofJesus considered themselves to be ina good position before God.

They supported the temple by payingthe required tax and by offering the

appropriate sacrifices. They abstainedfrom unclean food, circumcised theirsons, kept the festival days and the

Sabbaths, and tried to keep the law.

    2. The Gospel in the New TestamentThe Gospel Made Flesh

Then John came and cried Repent, and be baptized. Furthermore, Jesussaid a new birth was needed (John 3:3,

    5) and that except your righteousnessshall exceed [that] of the scribes and

Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into

the kingdom of heaven(Matt. 5:20).In other words, You need what you do

not have. Your works are not good

    2. The Gospel in the New TestamentThe Gospel in Paul

Paul thought he was in good spiritualstanding. But then he saw Jesus asthe Son of God, who loved me, and

gave Himself up for me(Gal. 2:20,NASB).

Suddenly, he saw himself not savedbut lost; not Gods servant but Godsenemy; not righteous but the chief of

    sinners.

    2. The Gospel in the New TestamentThe Gospel in Paul (Romans 1:16, 17)

The gospel is the power of God tosave all who believe.

Righteousness is based not on what

we do but on what Christ has donefor us, which we claim by faith. It is a

belief that grows from faith to faith(Rom. 1:17).

    2. The Gospel in the New TestamentThe Gospel in Paul (Romans 3:24-26)

Through Christ we have redemption(bought back by paying for our sins),justification (cleared of guilt and

cleansed by grace), andforgiveness(forgetsour past sins).

God, through the sacrifice of Christ, proves Himself to be just in justifyingthe ungodly who have put their faith

    in Jesus.

    2. The Gospel in the New TestamentThe NewCovenant

The new covenant is not new becausethe plan of salvation has always beenpredicated on the death of Christ, the

Lamb slain from the foundation of theworld(Rev. 13:8).

Its not really new (Lev. 19:18), exceptin that we are not just to love our

neighbor as ourselves, but as I [Jesus]

    have loved you(John 13:34)

Significantly, Revelation 10:7 isthe only other verse in Revelation

    (besides Revelation 14:6)

that specifically refers topreaching the gospel

(the Greek word translatedpreachedis euangelizo-,to proclaim good news).

    3. The Gospels ClimaxThe Decisive Issue

The decisive issue at the end of time is:Whom will we worship and obey? The God who made heaven and

earth,?Or the beast and his image?Obedience to the commandments

(including the Sabbath) through thefaith of Jesus signifies those who

remain faithful to the end. True religion

    demands both faith and obedience.

    The Everlasting GospelFinal Words

We do not need to balance faithwith works in order to be saved.

Faith alone is sufficient, but it must

not be an intellectual faith as thedevils have, nor a presumptuous

faith that claims the promises of Godwithout complying with the

    conditions of salvation; rather, it

must be a faith that works
