A1: One page story has to be written and repre-sented only using lines. Different thicknesses of lines could be used. No constraint on no. of lines and the size of the frame.

I wrote three stories out of which one had be se-lected. The story’s based on a flight journey of a girl.

Story:“Your flight got postponed”- that’s what they said

to Nina as she woke up that day. ‘little Nina’- little because she was so skinny and tiny that anyone could’ve mistaken her for a schoolgirl, where as she was 20 and was studying in college. She jumped out of the bed and called up the airlines. Yes! It did get preponed. Preponed to what time?- she has only 120 mins to reach the airport.

Little Nina managed to reached the airport on time. As she entered the flight, she felt weird. She didn’t want to go. ‘this has never happened before’ she thought. She always wanted to get out of that place- her hometown- Lilabari. But today she’s not much enthusiastic about it. She ignored her feel-ings and took her seat. A fat, very fat man came and

sat next to her. He was so fat that he even got

stuck between the two seats while getting into his seat. As he sat he cursed the airline for keeping apparently less space between the rows. Time passed, little Nina fell asleep, got up in between but again fell asleep, again got up. But this time she woke up to an announcement, announce-ment- this wasn’t the usual announcement that’s made by the flight attendants. Little Nina got scared. She listened to the announcement care-fully, due to some problems, the flight’s making an emergency landing. As the flight landed, everyone got out of their seats. The fat man seating beside little Nina got stuck again and as he was scared, he started fidgeting even more. Little Nina knew that this douchebag is not getting out of here anytime soon. So little Nina for the first time took advantage of her size and jumped over the seats to get out of there. As she walked out of the plane Little Nina for the first time in her life felt good about her built. All her life little Nina got bullied because of her built. But today it helped her save her own life.

The problem with my previous explorations’ is that there’s either too much happening in the frame or some parts were too heavy or visually it is not balanced.

A2: using basic shapes of circle, square, tri-angle and extensions of it. Start with simple divisions. No combinations of linear and solid forms. The forms shouldn’t look like any object or shouldn’t give you the impression of any im-age.

First I took the basic shapes and only using those shapes and repeating them I created few forms. Then I tried exploring few forms using per-spectives and layers in the shapes. I even used methods of cutting out shapes within shapes and placing them in such a way so that it looks like a paper cut out and a form as well.

A4:take the initials of our names and make a logo. Numerical couldn’t be used and not more than 2-3 letters could be used.

I took the initials M, R and T of my name and tried to bring out my characteristics in the initial explorations but gradually came to a conclusion to make it look more like a logo for my company and not an identity for myself.

Here I’ve used the negative space to bring out the letters or at least the impression of the let-ters of the identity. Negatives of Letters M and R have been com-posed in such a way that when you see it as a whole it gives you the impression of T.

A5: Chose any five words. Find out its meaning, its origin, how it came into being, use in different contexts. Shortlist two words. Do a proper study on them and finally decide on one word. Illus-trate it, simplify it appropriately so that its char-acteristic or the essence is retained. The illustra-tion should be a symbol for the chosen word.

The five words that I chose were: >fashion >Joie de vivre >bicycle >jester >joule.

The two words that I short-listed were fashion and jester.Fashion is a widely and com-monly used term and every individual has different perce-ptions or views about it and moreover symbols for it have been over exhausted widely used all around us. Therefore I decided to move ahead with ‘jester’.

Page 7: 4th semester

In the courts of kings and queens in medieval Europe, jester was the person whose job was to do silly things in order to make people laugh. Their hats were especially distinctive; typically made of cloth, they were floppy with three points, each of which had a jingle bell at the end. The three points of the hat represent donkey’s ears and nose and tail worn by jesters in earlier times.

So for the symbol I juxtaposed the body of a donkey and the head of the jester.

A1. Research on impressionism as a movement. Topics to cover:

Key visual attribute; leading artists; impact of philosophy on the movement; impact of systems; world order; timeline: history, inventions, discover-ies, literature.

A2. We were asked to watch lust for life by vincente minnelli. It is a movie on vincent van gogh’s life who was an impressionist painter and analyze it.

A lot of objects or attributes of the movie evoked the five senses using the principles of semiotics. We identified and analyzed how different framesof camera, light and specific features of the artistic period evoked the influence of the times and the age in art.

2. A prop director’s brief for objects and materials, and mood board.

3. 3 exemplar frames made by us depicting mo-ments of the narrative on the language of the period.

A3. We were given a story called the happy prince by oscar wilde, for which we had to cre-ate a performative visual language with three deliverables:

1. A poster for the performance

we made three different poste-rs depicting three different sc-enes/shots and moods of the story.

Page 9: 4th semester

A1. Write an introduction for yourself. Define yourself and also why did you choose graphic design. The way the text is composed should also represent you. It should capture your es-sence. In the first stage it should be hand done. Once the final refinements were done, you are supposed to use existing typefaces which look similar to your handwriting and recreate the art-work digitally. The constraint was to only use text and no illustration at all.

TYPOGRAPHYFaculty: Tarundeep Girdher Nidhi Sah

So after writing about myself, my concern was with the composition. Since I wrote in my introduction that I am little unpredictable and also when I asked few of my friends, my feminity is the first thing that comes to their mind. So I took inspiration from birds as I thought that they describe me the best.

From this assignment I learnt how to use dif-ferent aspects of typography like, leading, indent, tracking and also learnt how to use the various tools in Indesign and Illustrator.

A2. Find out about the personality of the fac-ulties assigned to you. Find out adjectives that describe them, their attributes. Write their names using already existing typefaces such that it de-picts the adjectives that describes them the best way possible.

The faculties assigned to me were Mr. Rupesh Vyas and Dr. Tridha Gajjar. After asking around their students and colleagues, adjectives that de-scribe them were:

Rupesh Vyas Tridha Gajjarsoft spoken conventionalresponsible traditionalcomposed disciplinedunderstanding logicalambitious rationalMulti tasking unbiasedPractical formalSimple receptive

Rupesh Vyas: initially I was trying to incorporate as many attributes as possible. But then I realised that some of the attributes were overpowering and in the process i was losing out some very impor-tant adjectives. So i recollected the brief, shortlisted three adjectives and started again.

I wrote the name thrice, to show ambitious and also multitasking. The idea of using a sans serif was to show simplicity and and approachable. I used Helvetica light condensed for him. The name is placed towards the bottom of the page is to emphasize on the multi tasking aspect and also to show responsibility.

Tridha Gajjar: I used the two lines to above and below to show formal but i kept the sides open to show that even though she’s formal, she’s recep-tive also. I’ve used Baskerville old face to give it the conventional feel. Baskerville is an old typeface but at the same time very widely used and popular. The text is in the centre of the page shows traditional.

A3. Research on the typeface ‘thesis’. Make a publication on the research.Points to cover: who- designer, foundryWhat- classificationWhere-where!Why- purpose and applicationHow- the processWhen was it madeSelf analysis observations

The thesis family is the largest type family of all. The thesis has three children namely the sans, the mix and the serif. Now these three siblings have their own children. The sans has three children called the sans, the sans mono and the sans typewriter. The sans and the sans mono also have their own family. The mix has two children called the mix and the mix mono but it also has an illegitimate child also, called the mix Arabic and like the sans even the mix under the mix also has its own family. Now the serif has two kids who are still young and haven’t started a family yet.So with all the legitimate and illegitimate children, grandchildren and grand children the thesis family is growing every day.

A5. Redesign the cover of the book- ‘the modern ideal’ by Paul Greenhaulgh. You only have to use text to bring out the essence of the book. Use ex-isting typefaces. Initially only in black and white but later on open to colours also.

The book ‘the modern ideal’ basically talks about how modern art remains the grand problem. Over the last three centuries, from the first musings of enlightenment thinkers, the stirrings of industrial-ism, and the exploration of the world, to the rise of the computer and the definitive arrival of globaliza-tion, artists, craftspeople and designers have been confronted with the spectacle of modernization. They have had to make sense of the transforma-tions a modernizing world continually imposes. And they have been, by turns, brutally critical and profoundly idealistic about the ongoing state of things.

Initially I tried out many layouts and various typefaces. I was trying to emphasize on the word ‘modern’ and ‘ideal’. In this process, the cover was becoming either very decorative or cluttered because of the fonts I was choosing. So after a lot of thought process, I realized that in the process of giving emphasis to the word ‘modern’ and ‘ideal’, I ended up selecting very decorative typefaces.

A5. Make a postcard with the quote given to you. Bring out the feel of the quote typographically, us-ing already existing typefaces. The postcard would be used as an invite for a presentation.

Initially I used, different brand names written in Helvetica as the back with less opacity and wrote the quote with an open typeface called Garamgarde. But in this layout the brand names were overpowering the quote. So then I decided to use the glyphs from Helvetica. I typed them ver-tically to give it the effect of coding which would represent the term information architect correctly.

So the typeface that I finally chose is century gothic which is a modern typeface. It’s a geometric typeface. It is not a decorative typeface. The composition is also kept very simple and plain.

The world is undergoing immense changes. never before have the conditions of life changed so swiftly and enormously as they have changed for mankind in the last five years. We havebeen carried along - with no means of measuring the increasing swiftness in the succession of events. We are only now beginning to realize the force and strenght of the storm

of change that has come upon us.H. G. WELLS, 1933

Crisis sells well. During the last few decades we have witnessed the sale (on new-stands, in bookshops, by subscription, door-to-door) of the crisis of religion, of marxism, of representation, the sign, philosophy, ethics, freudianism, presence, the subject (I omit other crises that I dont understand professionally even if I endure them, such as that of the lira, of housing the family,

institutions, oil).UMBERTO ECO, 1980

...it will seem doubtless strange that I should undertake to treat men’s vices and absurdities in the geometric style... I shall consider human actions and appetites just as if it were a

question of lines, planes and bodies.BENEDICT DE SPINOZA, 1677

Open elective- inclusive growth Rapid and sustained poverty reduction requires inclu-sive growth that allows people to contribute to and benefit from economic growth. Rapid pace of growth is unquestionably necessary for substantial poverty reduction, but for this growth to be sustainable in the long run, it should be broad-based across sectors, and inclusive of the large part of the country’s labor force. It focuses on ways to raise the pace of growth by utilizing more fully parts of the labor force trapped in low-productivity activities or completely excluded from the growth process. In our two weeks course we tried to bring two such work forces to work for each other, for their own uplift-ment and development. We studied and researched about the Sunday market and how the riverfront project would affect the Sunday market. What is the government doing about it? On the other hand we learned about various traditional folk artists from vari-ous parts of the world. Two such groups joined us lat-er on. One being Jumma Khan Mewati and his group who are traditional balladeers from Alwar, Rajasthan and Rajesh Bhatt Nagori with Chautmal Singh, the two puppeteers from Rajasthan. We tried our hands at puppetry and ballades. The next stage was to do a production through visual and oral narrative traditions on the issue of- the affects of the river front project on the Sunday market.

PRINTING TECHNOLOGYFaculty: Tridha Gajjar

Page 15: 4th semester

This course started with two weeks of theory presentation by Bharat Bhai. We even went for a field trip to art o prints where we were introduced to various kinds of offset machines. Some of them were 4 colour machines while there were others with additional units for spot colours, UV coating, etc. We also saw ma-chines for folding, cutting and pasting. There were bigger machines for die-cutting as well. It was an interesting experience to see the whole procedure of a job going through print right upto the final product.

We even learnt different methods of book binding. We did perfect bindind, pad binding, spiral bindind, section binding ourselves.

In the last week of practical sessions, we had to make a calendar, which was printed using three different printing methods: screen printing for the cover, letterpress for the back and offset for the inner content. We even learnt different methods of book binding. The details of my learning in this course has been documented separately. This course was basically an overview of the entire process of graphic printing production from start to finish. It gave me a very clear understanding of how to use presently existing tools to achieve good printing results and do justice to my design work in the future by being well aware of all the processes it goes through before the final product is obtained.

We started with a little background study about theatre, watched a movie called Utsav by Girish Karnad. The film is an adaptation of two classi-cal sanskrit plays- Charudatta by Bhasa, and its later adaptation in 6 century a.d. , Mrichakatika by Shudraka. The story is about a courtesan, Vasanta-sena (Rekha), and her chance meeting with a poor man, Charudatta (Shekhar Suman), in Ujjain.

We read some parts of Rig Veda followed by narrative exercise, we looked into traditional nar-rative techniques in the works of contemporary playwrights like Girish Karnad.

At the end of the course we had to stage a play called the post office by Rabindranath Tagore. It is a short play based on boy called Amal, a child confined to his adopted uncle’s home by an incur-able disease. We were divided in three groups: actors, script writers and productions team. I opted for the acting team. I played the role of a headman who initially made fun of Amal, mocked him but later on when he saw how innocent and good the kid was from his heart, he was ashamed of himself. In the later phase of the production, I had to think of a background the village headman in context to his role in the play.

INTRODUCTION TO THEATREFaculty: Arshia Sattar

Page 17: 4th semester

A1. Each one of us had to select a color and study its cultural, symbolic, emotional aspects. How it affects the psychology of people along with exam-ples.

I chose the colour black. Black is the color of ob-jects that do not emit or reflect light in any part of the visible spectrum; they absorb all frequencies of light. Black is sometimes described as an “achromatic”, or hueless color. Black can be seen as the colour of au-thority and seriousness. Black makes one feel incon-spicuous, provides a restful emptiness and is mysteri-ous by evoking a sense of potential and possibility. It is often used as a symbol of menace or evil, but it is also popular as an indicator of power. It is associated with death and mourning in many cultures. It is also associated with unhappiness, sexuality, formality, and sophistication. In ancient china, black was the symbol of north and water, one of the main five colors and in ancient Egypt, black represented life and rebirth. Black is also used for anarchist symbolism.

A2. Choose 5 logotypes/ identities and analyze them according to form and color.

The Batman go logo is sym-bolized by a bat. Its form makes it strong and threat-ening. It comprises of a black bat with spread wings, depicting bravery and heroism. The color of the Bat-man logo is black, providing the logo with a fearsome image. The background of the logo is yellow to show it as a warning sign and also to show him in the spot light.

A3. Choose any mood, select some graphical forms and metaphor. Try to simplify it. Analyze and use the color palate according to the mood.

I chose funny as a mood. Initially I was thinking it to be a time period when you feel things around which are normal seem weird to you, or your state of mind is a little different than in what you normally are in. E.g.- (a) you feel funny when you are sick. (b) feeling funny when you are dizzy. On asking around people of what sort of image comes to their mind when they think of funny, I got a list of random things like:

funny is very subjective.if something is funny toyou, it’s not necessary that it’d be funny for me as well. so I decided to narrow it down to so-me object that is commonly taken to be funny. I kept the color and form also in mind while thinking of such an object. finally I settled down on banana peel. it is yellow in color, a lot of funny images come to our mind when we think of banana peels. for a long time, banana peels have been used for

A4. record your activities from one normal work-ing day of your life. record the time spent and your moods also. make an info graphicto represent it.

I used the the NID map to show as my basic body, then i used different color codes to show my mood swings, the route that I took the entire day. the gradient is to show the gradual change in the mood while i was at the same place or same time period.

A5. comparison between two similar prodcts through infographics.

This is a comparison between two dairy products: cheese and butter. i used the common element between them to show their nuitritional differ-ences. Both the products are very much liked by children, so my aim was to use such a color pal-ate which appeal the children. i also focussed on not bringing in too many elements into the frame and very minimilastic use of colors.
