NIMUN 5 commenced on an exuberant note with over 150 delegates from schools

across the state, and beyond. The chief guest of the occasion, was Padma Bhushan

Lord Bhiku Parekh. Lady Pramilaben Parekh, Mrs. Tejal Amin, chairperson,

Navrachana Education Society, PTA presidents IB and CBSE Dr. Arjun Singh

Mehta and Mrs. Aditi Tiwari and Mr. Pradeep Sinha member executive committee

were in attendance. This simulation of UN upholds the NIMUN motto “In pursuit

of a humane world”.

The Chief Guest of the occasion, Padmabhushan Lord Bhikhu Parekh remarked

that globalization is posing challenges to ones identity. Using the analogy of a

house with windows, he defined the role of the UN in establishing an identity. The

individual , he said, represented the house, rooted firmly to the ground, while the

windows ushered in change from its contact with the outside world. Likewise, it is

the UN that helps define one among the several identities which cannot be

minimized but one that has to be adapted judiciously. His address picked up her

strand of “inter-dependence” emphasizing that UN needs to be sustained in spirit.

The secretary general, Nirja Bhatt called upon the delegates representing 8 UN

committees, UNSC, DISEC, EFC, SOCHUM, WHO, ECOFIN, UNDEP, IAEA,

and IPC, to deliberate on the complexities of international relations and the

intricacies of negotiations in the field of diplomacy. Lord Bhiku Parekh’s The

mime “Break Free” was a call to youth to use prudence in the marriage of choices

and responsibility. While the melodious song “Why” originally by Roger

Whittaker, captured the essence of NIMUN 5.

The initial lull, due to a huge chunk of first timers, gave

way to an animated discussion driven largely by

the delegates of the USA and Nigeria.

The chairperson of the IAEA joined the session as

an impromptu delegate representing the ISIS,

enlivening the committee and giving way to heat-

ed debate among the delegates. Debate was sus-

pended during the final session and it was decid-

ed discussion would resume the following day on

the ongoing topic. The day’s events ended on an

amusing note, with formal session

Security Council

IAEA

The IAEA has thus far proven to be a thoroughly engaging committee, with delegates

discussing and debating the topic at hand. The delegate of Iran held her own, following the

foreign policy and denying allegations of the production of nuclear weapons, until proof was

presented otherwise. In the first session, a crisis was introduced wherein the FBI reported

that Russia had been supplying plutonium to Iran. Russia accepted the allegation and the

debate continued as to how Iran would employ the technology and if it could be trusted.

The chair of UNEP was satisfied with the participation of all

delegates in the committee. The delegates engaged in

debate over the Kyoto protocol (which is an

international treaty that commits state parties to

reduce greenhouse gas emissions based on the premise

that global warming exists and that the cause is Carbon

emissions produced by man) and the flaws in it. The

Russian governments claimed a large part of the arctic

as their own sent military troops to defend it, a crisis to

which all delegates responded with decisiveness. The

session

UNEP

INTERNATIONAL PRESS CORPS

International Press Corp the most innovative committee of NIMUN

will play a special role by integrating the diverse subjects that will

be discussed in numerous committees. Delegates will therefore

achieve a comprehensive view of the economic, social and political

sate of the countries being represented. The Committee is formed

by media people from the CNN, BBC, XIN hua, TOI, TASS and Al

Jazeera.

Initially, participation levels in SOCHUM were relatively

low. Delegates were given time to refine their research

before resuming the committee session, after which de-

bate began to become more assertive. The discussion on

the issue of internally displaced persons reached a head;

each nation citing different causes and proposing differ-

ent solution to displacement in their own countries and

that of others’. The P5 Nations formed a block of their

own to form a resolution and working papers were draft-

ed and voted upon, concluding the day’s proceedings on

a satisfying note.

SOCHUM

were taken hostage. The pirates issued

an ultimatum –that nuclear warheads be

delivered to them within two days (30

minutes of NIMUN time), failing which,

they threatened to kill the American hos-

tages. The delegates broke into smaller

groups to form a working paper to ad-

dress the crisis at hand.

A final resolution was drafted during the

last session, and passed by the delegates,

thus concluding the fruitful debate.

WHO

All the delegates of the WHO clearly rep-

resented their countries’ stances and

efforts to combat the growing problem

of malnutrition, especially in third world

and economically unstable nations. Solu-

tions were deliberated upon through a

number of moderated caucuses and root

causes of the issue identified. A crisis

arose when it was revealed that US Aid

ships were hijacked by Somalian pirates,

and the crewmen (American citizens)

The topic was discussed with much fervor,

with crises introduced at regular levels. Del-

egates greatly differed in opinion, unsurpris-

ingly so, considering the controversial nature

of the issue, which inevitably lead to the for-

mation of two blocks who produced two

different working papers which were then

voted upon, bringing to an end the day’s

proceedings.

DISEC

ECOFIN

The delegates of ECOFIN, despite an initial lull, enthusiastically tackled

their first topic, exploring through several moderated caucuses the

deep reaching implications of corruption, their causes, and solutions

by which it could be curbed, ensuring efforts to better the lives’ of

others reach their full potential. The working paper was formed and

solutions compiled by all delegates, along with guiding suggestions

from the Secretary General, concluding the topic at hand.
