ST/MO Prototype plans• Phase I (October 2000 to January 2001)
– Functional model with alarms, mimics and trends• TDS data acquisition -> PVSS driver
• TDS data loading -> generic data loading mechanism
• Inter system communication with Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF) experiment
• Phase II (February to June 2001)– Performance tests and further development
• High data rates, many concurrent users, full TDS data set
• Customized general data loader
• Library of reusable standard symbols
• User tests in TCR

Data exchange
• 245 Data point elements
• 115 CAS alarms
• 2 trending parameters
• 6 commands
• 1 mimic diagram
4th ST Workshop, Chamonix 2001 U. Epting, M.C. Morodo Testa, P. Sollander
ST/MO Prototype results– Data acquisition
• TDS driver available on Linux and NT
– User interfaces• PVSS standard alarm screen with CAS data
– Works, but some configuration issues remain– A CERN wide PVSS alarm screen looked upon by SL/CO
• PVSS mimics– Reusable objects available, drag-and-drop view creation, easy to
use, fair graphics, integrated trending tools
– Data loader• Standard ASCII manager works, can be improved with
specialized tools to obtain better data integrity
– Data distribution• Ok for small scale, to be tested more large scale

• PVSS systems communicate
• LDIWG communication– PVSS or

ST Strategy (1)• Needs in terms of controls are not uniform
• ST-AA, ST-MO:– Some common requirements:
• Multi-platform
• Data exchange and integration
• CERN wide support
– Various systems used today• TDS (component ware)
• LabView, FactoryLink, DataViews, Tcl/Tk
– PVSS can fit (if evaluation results are positive)
– Towards a single SCADA by LHC start-up
4th ST Workshop, Chamonix 2001 U. Epting, M.C. Morodo Testa, P. Sollander
ST Strategy (2)ST-CV, ST-EL, ST-TFM:
– Control requirements are specific to their processes– Standard industrial control architectures for the LHC in use
• Feasibility and design phases have been completed• Installations are already in operation• Implementation is integrated in large-scale industrial contracts• Long-term maintainability with C168 contract
ST-CV, ST-TFM: Wizcon®
– Project started in 1997– Israeli product (free)– PVSS/Wizcon® integration foreseen with Atlas/CMS
ST-EL: Scatex® – Project started in 1998– Specifically adapted to ENS requirements– Turn-key approach
4th ST Workshop, Chamonix 2001 U. Epting, M.C. Morodo Testa, P. Sollander
CERN Controls Division Strategy• Keep numbers of SCADA products as small as
possible– Today: WIZCON, PCvue, WinCC and PVSS, ScateX
• Converge to a single product if possible– Migration costs and effort?
• Define clear interfaces between systems– OLE for Process Control (OPC)– PS/SL - Middleware project
• Provide central support and guidelines– SCADA User Group? PVSS seminar ...
4th ST Workshop, Chamonix 2001 U. Epting, M.C. Morodo Testa, P. Sollander

ST Strategy (2) ST-CV: Wizcon®
– 1997: SCADA feasibility studies and evaluation for CV Controls
– Fits to CV process controls• Flexible data sharing
• Regulation: accuracy, reliability
• Widely used in industrial environments outside CERN
– Israeli product • Privileged commercial
framework
– PVSS/Wizcon® integration • Already agreed with Atlas/CMS
– Long-term maintainability• In-house expertise + C168
ST-EL: Scatex® – 1998: Initial phases of the CERN
Electrical Distribution Network control system project (ENS)
– Specifically adapted to ENS• Powerful central control system
• Local supervision and interfaces to the electrical equipment (RTUs)
• Operational in other electrical applications outside CERN
– Turn-key approach• The Contractor is responsible for all
the system’s life cycle
– Long-term maintainability• C168: Preventive maintenance
