"To evangelize and share the Gospel, walk with one another on our journey of faith, and draw others into Christ's one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church." 4th Sunday of Lent March 15, 2015 On the 3 rd , 4 th and 5 th Sundays of Lent the Church celebrates the “Scrutinies” for the Elect (the unbaptized adults preparing for Baptism at the Easter Vigil). (Cycle A Readings for the 9 AM & 11 AM Masses.) To “scrutinize” means to take a long and careful look at the ways we need to be healed and strengthened. In the Scrutinies, the Elect and the Community both acknowledge the power of evil that hinders them from following Christ, and the Elect give public witness to their ongoing conversion. Conversion is not about punishment for sin; it is about an all-loving, merciful God who offers to save us from sin. Conversion is an opportunity to change. The First Scrutiny celebrated on the 3 rd Sunday of Lent asks us to reflect on the readings and consider the following questions. In what way have you experienced being an outcast? Who have you made an outcast and why? What are the deep thirsts of our world; Our society; Our Communities? What are my own deep thirsts? These are just a few of the questions the Elect have reflected on when they kneel before the altar today. During the week after the 3 rd Sunday of Lent, the Elect are presented with the Creed. The word “Creed” comes from the first word of the Latin document: “credo” meaning, “I Believe.” It is an ancient statement of faith that tells us what the early church believed and what we continue to believe today. During this Rite, the Elect are presented with the essential mysteries of our faith professed in the Nicene Creed and we ask God to purify the Elect to make them worthy to receive the grace of Baptism. The Creed will be presented at 6:45 PM, Wednesday, March 11th in the Church. The Parish Community is welcome to join us to show your ongoing support. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) Scrutinies and Presentation of The Creed God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. -John 3:17

On the 3rd, 4th and 5th Sundays of Lent the Church celebrates the “Scrutinies” for the Elect (the unbaptized adults preparing for Baptism at the Easter Vigil). (Cycle A Readings for the 9 AM & 11 AM Masses.) To “scrutinize” means to take a long and careful look at the ways we need to be healed and strengthened. Conversion is not about punishment for sin; it is about an all-loving, merciful God who offers to save us from sin. Conversion is an opportunity to change. The First Scrutiny celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of Lent asks us to reflect on the readings and consider the following questions.

Sermon continued from last Sunday’s bulletin, March 8

Because their angelic nature has been deformed and darkened by sin, devils now abuse their great gifts from God by using them to injure and destroy human beings. Their entire purpose is to see as many human beings as possible join them in rebelling against God and be separated forever from God in Hell.

Although demons have remarkable powers, we need to know that their powers are limited. For example, Satan and his cohorts cannot know the future unless God has revealed

it. However, given their vast knowledge of events throughout the world and history, they can make accurate predictions and then act on them.

So, the devil is not an evil deity, equal in power to God who is eternal, all-powerful and all-knowing. Satan is only a creature and, in the end, he is no match for God, His Creator and ultimate Judge.

This raises one last question about devils and their demonic activity. If God is supreme and infinitely more powerful than Satan and his hosts, then why doesn’t God prevent them from doing evil on earth? We could ask the same question why God doesn’t stop human beings from committing wicked deeds.

The answer is twofold. First, it’s because God respects the free will of angels and humans. Second, evil’s continuing presence and activity among us is a mystery that we can’t fully figure out in this life. However, we can say this much: God allows evil because He is powerful enough to bring out of the greatest evil a much better good.

The crucifixion of Jesus Christ is the perfect example of this truth. According to the Gospel, when “Satan entered into Judas,” one of the 12 Apostles, Judas went out and betrayed Jesus (Luke 22:3-4). So, the worst evil we can ever imagine—the torture and murder of God’s innocent Son—occurred through the devil’s influence. Yet, the triumph of the empty tomb transformed the horror of the cross. Satan was forever thwarted. When Jesus rose from the dead, He displayed God’s power to bring out of the greatest evil an even greater good—the world’s redemption.

What was true for Jesus is true for us. Our time on this earth provides the battleground for God to test, purify, strengthen and perfect us in order to make us fit to live with Him forever in heaven. And, to that end, the devils serve as useful tools for God as they constantly test us so that we can become purer, stronger and closer to perfection every time we resist the devil’s temptations. Quoting St. Augustine, “As an artist, God makes use even of the devil.”

The second principle of spiritual warfare is: KNOW OUR ENEMY’S BATTLE TACTICS. The devil uses various tactics, both ordinary and extraordinary, in his demonic work.

The ordinary activity of the devil is subtle. It occurs within our thought life. The devil plants ideas within our minds to influence our reason, memory and imagination—and ultimately our will. Devils can suggest ideas through conversations, reading, or viewing certain images.

Most often, devils influence us through temptation by enticing us to sin. They get our attention through our thoughts to arouse our emotions in order to get us to act sinfully.

Devils tempt us in various ways. First, demons tempt us through deception. In John 8:44, Jesus called the Devil “a liar and the father of lies” In Ephesians 6:11, the Apostle Paul speaks of the devil’s “wiles.” And again in his Second Letter to the Corinthians, 11:13, St. Paul states that Satan masquerades as an ”angel of light.” Very often a lie stands at the heart of the temptation the devil presents. Remember how Satan deceived Eve in the Garden of Eden. When the serpent tempted her, he did so with lies about God’s motives and the consequences of sin (See Genesis 3:4-5). In a similar way, the devil lies to us telling us for example, “Go ahead. Do it. It can’t be sinful because everybody is doing it.”
