Today’s Gospel about the healing of the man born blind was accompanied by the celebration of the Second Scrutiny with our catechumens. We’ve all heard the story about the blind man of Jericho, but do we understand that it’s also about what kind of sight you and I have?
The story ends with Jesus telling the man who had been born blind that he had came into the world “so that those who do not see might see, and those who do see might become blind.” Some pharisees were standing close enough to overhear this and said to Jesus, “are you calling us blind?”. To which he replied, “if you were blind there would be no sin in that, but you say ‘we can see’ and so you remain in your sin.” This exchange exploits their judgment that the man had been born blind because of sin—either his or his parents. Even Jesus’ own disciples had to have their misconception corrected when he told them that the man had been born blind so that he might give glory to God.
So, are you still living in your sin because you claim that there is nothing wrong with your sight? If you can see, wouldn’t you steer clear of sin and temptation? The fact is that all of us who are still attracted to sins of various kinds, need to ask Jesus to heal us of our own form of blindness. When the catechumens are baptized, they will be given a kind of sight they never had before. For the first time they will be able to see into the kingdom of God that is in their midst. They will be able to see their own lives and the world as Jesus sees them. And that is a cause for rejoicing.
As we draw closer and closer to Holy Week, let us allow the words of a familiar song to well up within us: Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that save a wretch like me. I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see.

COME EXPERIENCE
TAIZE PRAYER
In the words of St Pope John Paul II
Taizé prayer is like being beside a spring of water. The traveler stops, quenches his thirst and continues on his way. The prayer does not want to keep you. But rather, in prayer, song and silence, to enable you to drink the living water promised by Christ, to know his joy, to discern his presence, to respond to his call, then to set out again to witness to his love and to serve your brothers and sisters.
