Gray Cumberland Maine circular Preprinted envelope with Cumberland, Me CDS. Mailing date “Aug 26” added with pen, stamp cancelled with manuscript “1862”. Gray, a job printer, was prolific when it came to this form of early precanceled direct mail. There are several different types that were produced by him from the 1850s through early 1860s. A marvelous exhibit illustrating all three types and includes a cover with a Confederate stamp and the of-ficial Chattanooga CDS which was taken when the Confederate forces fled the city. There are also examples of the replacement CDS sent from Washington and arrived on January 17, 1864. There is a total of ten covers in the exhibit. (PH90-03) $1,300.00
