Objectives of the Project:

1. Contribute to the analysis of tourism destinations, and therefore, to the planning decision making both at regional and local level

2. Encourage local governments and private sector to implement planning and managing that takes into account sustainable and responsible issues, besides economic ones.

3. Improve the sustainable management of tourist destinations by provinding a useful and easy-to-use tool

4. Create a System of Tourism Indicators that is suitable and feasible to implement at Barcelona Province region, so it would be possible ensure continuity

3. What is the System of Tourism Indicators for Sustainable Destinations in Barcelona Province?

Tools of the System of Tourism Indicators for Sustainable destinations (STI)

1. Data Base of Tourism Indicators at local and regional level. Includes indicators related with environment, society, economics and managing of the destination (40 indicators)

2. Index of Tourism Sustainability (ITS). Agregate index based on Data Base of Tourism Indicators (12 indicators)

3. European System of Tourism Indicators (ETIS) (27 basic indicators) (+1 indicator)

• Set of simple indicators (12) comprising dimensions of sustainability, economic sectors, social and cultural issues.

• Provides an holistic and integrated interpretation of the selected indicators, both at municipality and comarca level

Strong relationship between sustainability and different managing models

Some of Tourist Destinations that are most committed with sustainability are among the worst ranked

Good level (quantitative and qualitative) of destination management and implementation of tourism policies from a sustainable point of view

Different level of accessibility and implementation of sustainable issues among tourist resources, tourist infrastructures and tourist destinations

• Validate STI methology. Consolidate STI as a tool for analysis and planning decision making. Solve problems on collecting and analysing data, in ordre to give to tourist destinations a more accurate information on their managing model from a sustainable point of view

• From a sample of 35 destinations to the whole set of tourist destinations in Barcelona and Catalonia. Finding the political and financial suport.

• From Project to Tool: the challenge of continuity. Finding the financial and technical suport that will allow upadting data base and use it as tool for Planning
