MISSION:Christ is the reason for our school.
He is the unseen but ever present
teacher in our classrooms. He is
the model for our faculty and the
inspiration of our students.
Train up a child in the way he should go, And even when he is old he will not depart from it.
(Proverbs 22:6)
Dear Friends,
For more than 135 years, St. Joseph School has provided students with an
excellent education in an environment that fosters spiritual growth and
religious formation. We offer high academic standards, while making sure
our students understand the mission of the Church and what it means
to be a Catholic. Our school is staffed with administrators and teachers
who are dedicated to the values and outcomes of Catholic education.
And our students move on to become morally grounded members of
society with many serving as business and civic leaders in our community.
We are very proud of our school and our students. This past year was an
exciting year as our teachers continued to expand the use of technology
and apply best practices in the classroom. Our students are prepared for
college and careers, while focusing on Christ – the reason for our school.
In the 2014-2015 academic year, SJS maintained an enrollment of 434
students. This population includes members of the St. Joseph Church
community, Catholics from other parishes and non-Catholic students. As a
result of the rigorous academics at SJS, our students continue to consistently
score above the state and national averages on standardized tests.
This year’s Annual Fund participation generated over $16,000. It is due to
your continued generous support of the Annual Fund that we have been
able to upgrade technology this year. Please mark your calendar for
August 10th from 5:00 pm–6:30 pm for our Grand Opening of the Courtyard
and Cyber Café in the High School building.
We look forward to another successful year academically and spiritually
in 2015-2016. We thank you, the alumni, parents, business partners,
grandparents, donors and friends – you who are sacrificing your time,
talent, and treasure to support Christian/Catholic education. Without your
support, Catholic education could not continue. May God reward your
efforts, and may God continue to bless St. Joseph School community with
love, commitment, and a generous heart!

HISTORY
St. Joseph School is a
dynamic, K-12 parochial
Catholic school in Conway,
Arkansas committed to
developing adults of faith
and intelligence. Since
1879, families have chosen
St. Joseph School for their
child’s education and
religious formation.
1879
1898
1896
The Holy Ghost Fathers were granted permission to
build a church in Conway to increase Arkansas
Catholic population. St. Joseph School was established
in May of 1879, following the dedication of St. Joseph
Church earlier that year.
The Sisters of St. Joseph de Cluny from France were
the first teachers, but left in 1896 and the school
closed. The school re-opened in 1898 with one lay
teacher for all 30 students.
The School Sisters of Notre Dame of Germany arrived
and began teaching by the end of 1898. The Sisters of
Notre Dame started the St. Joseph Bazaar in 1912 to
raise money for school supplies.
1926
1976
1980
Instruction through 9th grade was first offered in 1926
and the school expanded during the next four years
to include the 10th through 12th grades in 1930. The
Sisters of St. Joseph du Puy arrived in 1971 to teach
junior high and high school.
St. Joseph Endowment and Charitable Trust was
formed in 1976 to provide financial aid and support
to the school.
The Sisters of St. Joseph du Puy and all but two Sisters
of Notre Dame left around 1980 and all nuns were
gone at the end of the 1980-1981 school year. The
1981-1982 faculty consisted of all lay people.
1990
2000
2010
In the early-1990s, school uniforms were required. By
the mid-1990s, the small school gym was transformed
into a parish hall/school cafeteria, and a spacious
Family Activities Center became the new gym.
At the start of the 2000-2001 school year, the
St. Joseph Elementary School, purchased by the
Friends of St. Joseph, and later assumed by the
St. Joseph Endowment, was dedicated. It now
houses Pre-K through 3rd grade.
In 2010, St. Joseph Church and School became a
part of the Diocese of Little Rock.
