Day 1: Warm Up: Where and how does water travel on earth?

LT: I can identify four important chemicals that cycle on earth.

Page 3: 5: Cycles...carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycle throughout the biosphere. Review: important biogeochemical cycles on earth. Nitrogen Cycle - Nitrogen is converted into a variety

Law of conservation of matter: Matter cannot be created or destroyedAll the “stuff” on earth never disappears...it just changes form (solid, liquid gas)

Scientists study the changing forms of different chemicals and have figured out how important chemicals on earth cycle

These cycles are called BIOGEOCHEMICAL CYCLES

Important Biogeochemical Cycles on Earth- WATER- CARBON- NITROGEN- PHOSPHORUS

WATER CYCLE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fvkzjt3b-dU

- 70% of earth is covered in water...only 2.5% of that is freshwater!

- Freshwater cycles between the atmosphere and the hydrosphere

- Water changes from liquid to gas to solid

- Evaporation: L to G- Condensation: G to L- Freezing: L to S- Precipitation: atmosphere to

hydrosphere

CARBON CYCLE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8Y6L5TI_94

- Carbon is the building block of life!- Carbon exists in many forms (CO2 - gas,

glucose - solid, anything organic (alive) is made of carbon)

- Huge carbon source is stored in TREES- Animals breathe CO2 out into the air- Another huge carbon source is in fossil

fuels (used to be alive, over time turned into oils and gas that burn)

- Burn fossil fuels...changes carbon into gas...goes into atmosphere...

Day 2: Warm Up: What are elements? What are molecules?

LT: I can explain how water, carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycle throughout the biosphere.

Page 14: 5: Cycles...carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycle throughout the biosphere. Review: important biogeochemical cycles on earth. Nitrogen Cycle - Nitrogen is converted into a variety

Nitrogen Cycle- Nitrogen is converted into a variety of

different forms- Majority of the atmosphere (78%) is

made up of Nitrogen- Nitrogen is also stored in organic

matter (living stuff)...needed for PROTEIN

- Decaying stuff releases Nitrogen back into the soil...results in uptake by trees

- Bacteria help change Nitrogen’s form to be usable for plants.

Phosphorous Cycle- Slowest cycle- Phosphorus is found in rocks and

ocean sediment- Erosion and weathering and mining

help release phosphorus into the water and soil

- Phosphorous is also used in fertilizers and organic matter

- NO atmosphere P!

Day 3:Warm Up: What is one fun thing you did yesterday?

LT: I can work with a group to research and present on my assigned cycle.

Page 22: 5: Cycles...carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycle throughout the biosphere. Review: important biogeochemical cycles on earth. Nitrogen Cycle - Nitrogen is converted into a variety

Cycles Project● Work with your group to research your assigned cycle

(water, carbon, phosphorus, or nitrogen). ● Create a poster or another visual display showing how

your element or molecule cycles through earth’s spheres● Type a group summary explaining your complete cycle

(one per group) that you will turn in● Prepare a short presentation (using your visual aid:

poster, powerpoint, model etc). to show teach your class about your assigned cycle

Day 4:Warm Up: What cycle are you researching?
