Although programs combiningprostaglandin (PGF2
) treatments and
heat detection are very effective fordairy heifers, many producers have to
rely on Timed A.I. protocols to get theirheifers bred due to a number of differentreasons. Unfortunately, when the originalOvsynch protocol is used in heifers, conception rates are – in general – muchlower than conception results achievedwith breedings performed followingestrus detection. These lower results withOvsynch in heifers seem to be related
with faster follicular turn-over, lowerovulation rates, and higher percentageof heifers displaying premature estrusbefore scheduled A.I. (revised by Rivera
et al., 2004). Most research groups tendto accept the fact that regular CIDR-synch-like protocols can efficiently reduceamount of heifers showing prematureestrus during timed A.I. procedures; yet, conception rates don’t seem to be ideal, and most frequently inferior to conceptionresults attained with breedings followingestrus detection.
In some countries such as Argentinand Brazil, synchronization protocothat combine estrogens with shohalf-life and progesterone device
with or without equine gonadotrop(eCG) applied at the end of thprotocol, are very popular and seeto produce more acceptable results terms of conception in dairy and benuliparous heifers. article will try to present some insightabout recent and promising findings
towards developing an efficientsynchronization program for heifersutilizing hormones that are availablein the U.S. market.
Currently, one of the best protocolsfor dairy heifers in terms of conceptionseems to be the newly developed5-Day CIDR Synch (Bridges etal., 2008). This is the sequence of
injection during the 5-Day CIDRprotocol: on Day 0, CIDR is appliedtogether with a GnRH injection. Fivedays later (5 complete days afterCIDR insertion!), CIDR is removedand a PGF2
treatment is given at
the same time. A second PGF2 is
required in beef and dairy cows (butnot on heifers), sometime between8 to 24 hours after CIDR removal.
Then, three days after CIDR removal
(Day 8), animals are bred togetherwith an additional GnRH treatment
at the time of A.I.
The original work to develop the5-Day CIDR protocol was done byBridges et al. (2008) using beefcows as experimental units. Theirresults suggested that reducingCIDR insertion from 7 to 5 days, associated with longer pro-estrusintervals improved conception
rates. It is important to highlightthat Bridges et al. (2008) used twoPGF2
injections in all trials to
enhance CL regression, the firstPGF2
was done at CIDR removal
and the second PGF2 was given
12 hours later.
This pioneer work was done by Bridgeset al (2008) and served as rationale
for several further trials using beef
(Kasimanickam, et al., 2009), dacows (Chebel et al., 2009), and daheifers (preliminary results show
by Dr. Thatcher at DCRC meetingMinneapolis, MN 2009). In addition, number of other ongoing experimenare to be published in the next coupof months, and they will provide moknowledge about the use and efficaof the 5-Day CIDR protocol.
For instance, Kasimanickam et a(2009) tested whether two PGF2treatments are actually needed CIDR removal when a 5-Day protocis used in beef cows. Secondarily, this same trial, they compared twtypes of PGF products (dinoprovs cloprostenol) when a single PGtreatment was given at CIDR removaIn summary, they found no differencbetween the two PGF2
produc
However, two PGF2 treatmen
seem to be necessary for maximu
conception rates in beef cowreceiving the 5-Day CIDR protocol.
Finally, there is sufficient scientievidence proving the effectiveneof the 5-Day CIDR protocol dairy heifers (data summarizeand presented by Dr. Thatcher DCRC meeting in Minneapolis, M
– 2009). Briefly, these researche
observed in a series of field triathat a single PGF2
treatme
given at CIDR removal is enough produce good CL regression, anoutstanding conception results thare comparable to conception resuachieved when heifers are bred aftregular estrus detection.
Dr. Thatcher also reported simil

autoclaving are important detawhen re-utilizing CIDRs, mostly, avoid horizontal spread of infectiodiseases within the herd.
The new 5-Day CIDR Synch migalso be a good option for those wwant to use sexed semen associatewith Timed A.I. in heifers. In faaccording to later findings (DCR
2009), the 5-Day CIDR protocproduced acceptable conceptiresults even after the use of sexesemen in heifers. For example, in oof the trials that they used the 5-DCIDR protocol with a single PGFat CIDR removal, they found thconception rates for dairy heifers brewith sexed semen was 43% (43/10compared to 53.1% (52/98) for heifeinseminated with regular semen. Thuconception results with sexed semin heifers treated with the 5-Day CIDSynch are in the same range of tresults achieved when sexed semis used after estrus detection, bfurther trials are necessary to confithese encouraging findings.
In Summary, here are some of tadvantages of the 5-Day CIDR Syn
program:
1) No pre-synchronization is needed
2) Minimum amount of handlings – very simple to apply.
3) Consistent conception results ancomparable fertility to heat detectiobreedings, even in heifers.

4) The entire protocol lasts only 8days, which makes it an attractiveoption for re-synch breedings for
heifers, as well as for beef and dairycows (future research needs tovalidate this for dairy cows).
5) 5-Day CIDR synch providesacceptable results following sexedsemen breedings in heifers.
