Background
In the interest o creating a more standardized, air, andmeaningul naturalization process, U.S. Citizenship andImmigration Services (USCIS) redesigned the naturalizationtest. The redesigned test, with an emphasis on the undamentalconcepts o American democracy and the rights andresponsibilities o citizenship, will help encourage citizenship
applicants to learn and identiy with the basic values we all shareas Americans.
The major aim o the redesign process was to ensure thatnaturalization applicants have uniorm, consistent testingexperiences nationwide, and that the civics test can eectivelyassess whether applicants have a meaningul understanding oU.S. government and history. Following a basic U.S. history andcivics curriculum, the redesigned test will serve as an importantinstrument to encourage civic learning and patriotism amongprospective citizens.
To accomplish these goals, USCIS initially piloted a newtestwith an overhauled English reading and writing section,as well as new history and government questionsin tensites across the country. The eedback rom this pilot wasthen used to fnalize testing procedures, English reading andwriting prompts, and a list o 100 new history and governmentquestions. To ensure the pilot accounted or a representativesample o candidates with a variety o education levels, the testwas also piloted at adult education sites nationwide.
For more information on the redesigned (new) naturalizationtest, please visit http://www.uscis.gov/newtest.
The USCIS Ofce o Citizenship has developed a variety ostudy materials or the redesigned (new) naturalization test.
These materials include Civics
Flash Cards, Vocabulary Flash Cards,Learn About the United States: Quick Civics
Lessons, and translated versions othe civics questions available athttp://www.uscis.gov/newtest.
