Bharat Symphony70th Anniversary of Indiarsquos Independence

The commissioned piece Bharat Symphony will be an elegant tapestry of Indian culture in four movements symbolizing the four major periods of Indian history namely

1 Prehistoric Vedic era 2 The Mughal era 3 The British era 4 Post Independence modern era

The first movement will incorporate melodic chants from the Rigveda a sacred text in the Sanskrit language believed to be 5000 years old In the second movement the Islamic and Mughal influences which were prevalent around the 11th century will be interwoven into the structure of the composition by introducing Hindustani instruments like tabla The third movement will focus on the interplay of various modes of orchestral music with an emphasis on violin which was reintroduced during the British raj period The fourth movement will symbolise the post-Independence era and will trace global influences over the last seventy years

Subramaniam Indiarsquos violin icon ldquoThe Paganini of Indian Classical musicrdquo ldquothe God of Indian Violinrdquo is the serenity of an Indian musician combined with the magnetism of a western star From Singapore to Paris from Delhi to Los Angeles he has conquered every audience with the elegance and virtuosity of a master musician His career as a childhood prodigy brought him into contact with the greatest musicians and he soon imposed himself as a violin virtuoso At a very young age he was honored with the title ldquoViolin Chakravarthyrdquo (emperor of the violin)

No other musician has been as prolific as Dr L Subramaniam who has performed and recorded Carnatic (South Indian) classical music western classical music both orchestral and non-orchestral and also composed for and conducted major orchestras scored for films and collaborated with some of the greatest musicians from wide-ranging genres of music including jazz world music global fusion and jugalbandis with Hindustani (North Indian) musicians He has established himself as a force that is strongly Indian but universal in

nature and approach

So far Dr Subramaniam has produced performed collaborated and conducted up to two hundred recordings He has collaborated and recorded with Yehudi Menuhin Stephane Grappelli JeanPierre Rampal Steven Seagal Ruggiero Ricci Arve Tellefsen Herbie Hancock Joe Sample Stanley Clarke George Duke Al Jarreau Jean Luc Ponty Earl Klugh Larry Coryell Corky Siegel Tony Williams Billy Cobham John Surman Maynard Ferguson and Ravi Coltrane to name a few

His compositions have also been used in various stage presentations by leading ballet companies including the Cleveland San Jose Ballet Company and the Alvin Ailey Company To further an understanding of Carnatic music he has released a four-CD set called ldquoAn Anthology of South Indian Musicrdquo and written an authoritative book ldquoEuphonyrdquo which was co-authored with his late wife Vijayashree Subramaniam

He has received several awards and honours including the coveted Padma Bhushan and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for ldquoThe Most Creative Artistrdquo from the President of India He has been awarded the ldquoNada Chakravartirdquo (Emperor of Sound) from HH Sri Ganapati Sachchidananda Swami-ji In recognition of his contribution to the world of music he has also received six honorary doctorates

Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam

Undoubtedly one of the favourites of the critics and the masses Kavitarsquos singing career reads like a fairy tale Her exquisite and mellifluous voice wide range and versatility to sing different styles and types of songs has put her in a unique place amongst singers and she has been quoted as a ldquomelody queenrdquo by leading critics and connoisseurs alike Born in Delhi she began her vocal training under Sri Balram Puri (in the Hindustani style of music) at a very young age

Kavita enrolled at St Xavierrsquos College Bombay where she obtained an Honours Degree in Economics While in college she started singing professionally on stage with the great music director and singer Hemant Kumar Mukesh and Manna Dey and then embarked on an illustrious recording career in films in 1971 Her first recording for a Bengali film song was a duet with Lata Mangeshkar Maang Bharo Sajna was her first Hindi film under Sri Laxmikant Pyarelal followed by Pyar Jhukta Nahin Since then she has had an illustrious career and has sung in the following films Mr India Karma Saudagar Khuda Gawah Chaalbaaz 1942 ndash A Love Story Yaarana Mohara Bombay Saaz Khamoshi Pardesh Bhairavi Agnisakshi Prem Agan Kuch Kuch Hota Hai Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan Wajood Hum Dil de Chuke Sanam Taal Hum Saath Saath Hain Vaastav Khoobsurat Gaja Gamini Pukar Dil Chahta Hai Devdas Dil Vil Pyar Vyar Jeena Sirf Tere Liye The Rising to name just a few

Her exemplary voice has taken her all around the world including to the US UK Europe Africa Australia Far East Middle East and

South America She has performed in some of the most prestigious venues of the world including the Royal Albert Hall London The Kennedy Centre Washington DC Madison Square Gardens The Lincoln Centre New York the Zhongshan Music Hall Beijing and The Esplanade Singapore Putra Jaya World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur among others

Having performed in every inhabited continent there is very little left of the world for Kavita to conquer with her voice She has performed in every nook and corner of India from Punjab to Kanyakumari and Bengal to Gujarat and the Andaman Islands She has performed in the largest concert halls and stadiums and her voice has reached millions of people

touching their hearts as she has sung in almost all the Indian languages including Marathi Gujarati Punjabi Bengali Oriya Assamese Tamil Telugu Malayalam Kannada Bhojpuri Jharkhandi Rajasthani and Konkani She has also sung for several Nepalese and Bangladeshi films Although primarily a playback singer Kavita has not allowed herself to be limited She has sung with orchestras as a soloist she has collaborated with Western artists from the Jazz Popular and Classical fields She has sung ghazals and devotionals She has even sung IndiPop Her classical jugalbandi concert with Pandit Jasraj and Dr L Subramaniam has been released both audio and DVD by Music Today Following her wedding to Dr L Subramaniam she has explored and expanded her artistic range to areas which have never been explored by singers before She was the main featured soloist in the ldquoGlobal Fusionrdquo album released by Warner Bros featuring musicians from all the five continents She has sung as a soloist with orchestras like the Beijing Symphony Orchestra Leipzig Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestra and she has dazzled audiences from around the world with her stage performances recordings and playback singing for the past thirty years singing more than 15000 songs

Bindu Subramaniam

ldquoHauntingrdquo and ldquoHypnoticrdquo are the two words most commonly used to describe Bindu Subramaniamrsquos voice Having been dubbed a ldquothird-generation prodigyrdquo by the press Bindu wrote her first song at seven and has been performing since age twelve She has created a very original sound fusing soft rock and jazz elements with traditional Indian music Her training in Indian and western styles of music have given her a unique sound As a songwriter and composer Bindu Subramaniam has received Honourable Mentions at the 16th Annual Billboard World Song Contest (2009) the 17th Annual Billboard World Song Contest (2010) and was a Top 20 Finalist (Performance) at the 12th Annual Unisong International Song Contest (2009) Bindu is the only Indian artist to receive this accolade

Bindu has toured extensively performing with her family (parents Dr L Subramaniam and Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam and brother Ambi Subramaniam) her band and as a soloist with symphony orchestras Her debut solo album entitled ldquoSurrenderrdquo was released in 2011 on Times Music and was nominated for a GiMA in the Best PopRock Album category In January 2012 Bindu was named by Verve magazine as one of 12 Gen Next Achievers In 2014 she launched a band called SubraMania with her brother Ambi and has performed across India Europe and the US to great critical acclaim Their first single ldquoDays in the Sunrdquo has gone viral followed by releases ldquoEsperanzardquo ldquo7songrdquo and ldquoPeacockrdquo

Bindu also has a masterrsquos degree in law a masterrsquos certificate in songwriting and music business from Berklee and an MPhil in Cultural Studies in Music She currently serves as the Dean of the Subramaniam Academy of Performing Arts

in Bangalore heads the SaPa in schools program which provides music education to over 10000 students in India and has co-written (with Dr L Subramaniam) the SaPa Baby series of music books

Ambi Subramaniam

Ambi Subramaniam gave his first performance at the age of seven and since then has performed in many prestigious venues across the world He has received the Ritz Icon of the Year Award the Rotary Youth Award two GiMAs (Global Indian Music Award for Best Fusion Album and Best Carnatic Instrumental Album) and Big Indian Music Award (for Best Carnatic Album) Hailed as ldquothe new king of Indian classical violinrdquo (The Times of India) Ambi regularly plays duet violin concerts with his father and guru Dr L Subramaniam as well as solo concerts He has performed at the prestigious Dussehra Festival at the Mysore Palace the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad the Lincoln Center Out of Doors Festival the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Chicago the Royal Festival Hall in London the Maximum India Festival at Kennedy the Royal Opera House Muscat and at the Centenary Celebration of the Banglaore Gayana Samaj He was a featured soloist for the Sounds of India program featuring talented instrumentalists from around the country and he has been invited to perform

at TEDx events to expose new audiences to Carnatic music

At age 13 he was invited to present a concert for the then President of India HE APJ Abdul Kalam for the Pravasi Bharitiya Divas He has performed with Dr M Balamuralikrishna Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia and Shankar Mahadevan As a fusion performer he has formed a band called SubraMania with his sister Bindu and has performed extensively with his family (father Dr L Subramaniam mother Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam sister Bindu Subramaniam) and collaborated with Larry Coryell Ernie Watts Corky Siegel and Shankar Mahadevan

As an orchestral soloist he performed lsquoShanti Priyarsquo with the Seattle Symphony in January 2013 He has also performed with the Orchestra Nationale du Lille Sinfonia Baltica the Kwazulu Natal Symphony the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra and the Leipzig Philharmoic Orchestra to name a few Ambi plays Western and Indian violin with equal ease and has appeared for the Associated Board Royal School of Musicrsquos violin exams and has been ranked first securing distinctions and special awards Apart from the violin he has also received distinctions in piano and western classical music and has been a three-time winner of the Philomena Thumbochetty Award for Best Western Classical Violinist

Debashish Bhattacharya

Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya is a world-renowned guitar virtuoso a legend of the slide guitar who is a global inspiration in the contemporary musical scene in India and abroad From the age of four his child-like fascination with a Hawaiian guitar led him to modifying guitars that he has now patented all the while creating a unique playing style that has been mesmerizing audiences and artists for the past four decades

With a prestigious musical lineage that hails back to gurus Pandit Brij Bhushan Kabra Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty and the late Ustad Ali Akbar Khan he has taken this unique musical pedigree to the mainstream He has topped the charts and been featured in the Billboard Songlines and National Geographic and has received numerous awards and accolades such as the 2016 Songlines Music Award 2002 and 2009 Grammy Nominee 2007 BBC Planet Award 2005 Asiatic Society Gold medal and the 1984 President of India Gold Medal His unique take on contemporary compositions has attracted unique music collaborations with legends like 12-time Grammy winner Jerry Douglas African kora legend Ballake Sissoko jazz guitar legend John McLaughlin Moroccan oud legend Dris El Maulumi American Bluesman Bob Brozman British singer Martin Simpson Australian rocker John Butler and many others

Tanmoy Bose

Receiving his early tutelage from the legendary Lt Kanai Dutta Tanmoy became the heralded torchbearer of the Farukkabad gharana ndash Pandit Shankar Ghosh For the past three decades he has been taking lessons from his guru in light of an extremely busy performing and teaching schedule across the globe One of his greatest musical achievements to date having performed with the greatest ambassador of Indian classical music Pandit Ravi Shankar for nearly six years until his death accompanying him regularly around the world

Tanmoy has been an ardent researcher and composer His long tours abroad have given him rare opportunities to interact and play with a wide array of musicians composers choreographers and the like which has allowed him to create musical projects like DHWANI BEYOND BORDERS TAALYAAGNA CHATURANG and MOKSH - based on the virtues of Indian Rhythmic nuances For him music and life

are inseparable Rhythm is his quest of truth and beauty- it transcends all other priorities in his life

Mahesh Krishnamurthy

Mahesh Krishnamurthy started learning mridangam at the age of seven under Thattha Mangalam Chandra Sekhar Menon at Palghat Kerala He then studied under Shekaripuram Ramakrishnan at Palghat and then continued and furthered his mridangam training in Mumbai under the guidance of the eminent Vidhwan Karaikudi Chandramouli who groomed him to be a concert musician for over a decade Krishnamurthy has received additional training under the mridangam maestro Karaikudi Mani in Chennai and he has also had the privilege of accompanying leading musicians such as Mandolin Srinivas Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and Pandit Jasraj among others He is deeply inspired by Dr L Subramaniam who has encouraged and motivated him in

his artistic endeavors and together they share a rich musical understanding that spans over two decades

N Radhakrishnan

For Thripunithura N Radhakrishnan music is in his blood Born into a well-renowned musical family he received his first lessons on the mridangam from his father (the late) G Narayana Swamy He then went on to pursue the Ganabhooshanam and Ganapraveena degrees from Thripunithura RLV College of Music and Sree Swathi Tirunal College of Music Thiruvananthapuram

But his interest was always in the ghatam an instrument so simple in design He began exploring its tonal possibilities at the age of 11 and started playing it shortly after in classic music concerts Since then Radhakrishnan has been accompanying prominent musicians like Dr L Subramaniam (Violin) KV Narayanaswamy M Balamuralikrishna KJ Yesudas TN Krishnan (violin) N Ramani (flute) and KS Narayanaswamy (veena)

In 1997 he won the prestigious Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi award and today Radhakrishnan runs a music school named after his father GN Swamy in Thripunithura where he has started his own ensemble called Laya Vadya Tarangam

Joanne May Conductor

Joanne May is in her ninth year as Assistant Professor of Music and director of the Philharmonic Orchestra chair of the string department and music education instructor at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst Illinois During her tenure at Elmhurst College she founded the annual Elmhurst College World Music Series assisted in writing the course String Improvisation for Educators added three new string faculty members to the department started a secondary instrument string orchestra for music education students began an electric string ensemble conducted the Philharmonic at the Illinois Music Education Conference and set up annual performance tours to high schools in several states Prior to teaching at Elmhurst College May retired from teaching 33 years in public schools in Illinois and Missouri serving as an instructor of strings orchestra band choir general music and as music department chair at Glenbard East High School in suburban Lombard IL She received numerous awards for excellence in teaching including the Mary Hoffman Award for Teaching Excellence by ILMEA Glenbard Township High School District Distinguished Service Award Educator of the Year and Distinguished Service Award from the Illinois American String Teacherrsquos Association and Teacher

Recognition Award for the Presidential Scholar Program in Washington DC by the US Department of Education She is a National Board Certified Teacher and served as President of the Illinois American String Teachers Association and President of the Orchestra Division of ILMEA May is currently national chair of Orchestra Council for NAfME

Elmhurst College Philharmonic Orchestra and Elmhurst Community Singers

The Elmhurst College Philharmonic Orchestra held its first annual World Music Festival in 2011 at the encouragement of guest lecturer Srini Krishnan Headmaster of the School of Music in Chennai India that was founded by AR Rahman composer of Slum Dog Millionaire That festival was such a great success that it subsequently became a regular event on campus transforming into a series in 2013 with multiple events throughout the academic year Featured programs have included ldquoGlobal RhythmsndashMusic of Indiardquo ldquoOleacute The Musical Influence of Spainrdquo ldquoRUSSIArdquo ldquoThe Music of Brazil Italy amp Francerdquo and ldquoKONTRAS Music of Contrastsrdquo Guest artists have included Celtic fiddler Liz Carroll steelpan player Liam Teague Russian cellist Ian Maksin Mullane Healey Godley Irish Dancers and the Mexican band Mariachi Real de Jalisco Important in choosing music for the Elmhurst World Music Festivals has been the requirement that the Philharmonic Orchestra be included in the performances Many world music festivals feature soloists and small ensembles but the Elmhurst festival always seeks to include a fusion of music that can be performed by a traditional symphony orchestra with music that is indigenous to the particular culture Dr L Subramaniam composer of Bharat Symphony has done just this ndash he has written a beautiful work depicting the history of India incorporating the sounds colors and textures of the traditional symphony side by side with singers and instrumentalists particular to India Tabla solo Indian voice guitar classical Indian violin and folk tunes of India are beautifully intertwined into the landscape of the symphony throughout this work Under the direction of Professor Joanne May the Elmhurst Philharmonic Orchestra and Elmhurst Community Singers are comprised of Elmhurst College students and faculty members as well as a number of talented community members The performers have rehearsed throughout the summer to prepare for this Chicago World Music Concert

Bharat Symphony70th Anniversary of Indiarsquos Independence

The commissioned piece Bharat Symphony will be an elegant tapestry of Indian culture in four movements symbolizing the four major periods of Indian history namely

1 Prehistoric Vedic era 2 The Mughal era 3 The British era 4 Post Independence modern era

The first movement will incorporate melodic chants from the Rigveda a sacred text in the Sanskrit language believed to be 5000 years old In the second movement the Islamic and Mughal influences which were prevalent around the 11th century will be interwoven into the structure of the composition by introducing Hindustani instruments like tabla The third movement will focus on the interplay of various modes of orchestral music with an emphasis on violin which was reintroduced during the British raj period The fourth movement will symbolise the post-Independence era and will trace global influences over the last seventy years

Subramaniam Indiarsquos violin icon ldquoThe Paganini of Indian Classical musicrdquo ldquothe God of Indian Violinrdquo is the serenity of an Indian musician combined with the magnetism of a western star From Singapore to Paris from Delhi to Los Angeles he has conquered every audience with the elegance and virtuosity of a master musician His career as a childhood prodigy brought him into contact with the greatest musicians and he soon imposed himself as a violin virtuoso At a very young age he was honored with the title ldquoViolin Chakravarthyrdquo (emperor of the violin)

No other musician has been as prolific as Dr L Subramaniam who has performed and recorded Carnatic (South Indian) classical music western classical music both orchestral and non-orchestral and also composed for and conducted major orchestras scored for films and collaborated with some of the greatest musicians from wide-ranging genres of music including jazz world music global fusion and jugalbandis with Hindustani (North Indian) musicians He has established himself as a force that is strongly Indian but universal in

nature and approach

So far Dr Subramaniam has produced performed collaborated and conducted up to two hundred recordings He has collaborated and recorded with Yehudi Menuhin Stephane Grappelli JeanPierre Rampal Steven Seagal Ruggiero Ricci Arve Tellefsen Herbie Hancock Joe Sample Stanley Clarke George Duke Al Jarreau Jean Luc Ponty Earl Klugh Larry Coryell Corky Siegel Tony Williams Billy Cobham John Surman Maynard Ferguson and Ravi Coltrane to name a few

His compositions have also been used in various stage presentations by leading ballet companies including the Cleveland San Jose Ballet Company and the Alvin Ailey Company To further an understanding of Carnatic music he has released a four-CD set called ldquoAn Anthology of South Indian Musicrdquo and written an authoritative book ldquoEuphonyrdquo which was co-authored with his late wife Vijayashree Subramaniam

He has received several awards and honours including the coveted Padma Bhushan and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for ldquoThe Most Creative Artistrdquo from the President of India He has been awarded the ldquoNada Chakravartirdquo (Emperor of Sound) from HH Sri Ganapati Sachchidananda Swami-ji In recognition of his contribution to the world of music he has also received six honorary doctorates

Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam

Undoubtedly one of the favourites of the critics and the masses Kavitarsquos singing career reads like a fairy tale Her exquisite and mellifluous voice wide range and versatility to sing different styles and types of songs has put her in a unique place amongst singers and she has been quoted as a ldquomelody queenrdquo by leading critics and connoisseurs alike Born in Delhi she began her vocal training under Sri Balram Puri (in the Hindustani style of music) at a very young age

Kavita enrolled at St Xavierrsquos College Bombay where she obtained an Honours Degree in Economics While in college she started singing professionally on stage with the great music director and singer Hemant Kumar Mukesh and Manna Dey and then embarked on an illustrious recording career in films in 1971 Her first recording for a Bengali film song was a duet with Lata Mangeshkar Maang Bharo Sajna was her first Hindi film under Sri Laxmikant Pyarelal followed by Pyar Jhukta Nahin Since then she has had an illustrious career and has sung in the following films Mr India Karma Saudagar Khuda Gawah Chaalbaaz 1942 ndash A Love Story Yaarana Mohara Bombay Saaz Khamoshi Pardesh Bhairavi Agnisakshi Prem Agan Kuch Kuch Hota Hai Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan Wajood Hum Dil de Chuke Sanam Taal Hum Saath Saath Hain Vaastav Khoobsurat Gaja Gamini Pukar Dil Chahta Hai Devdas Dil Vil Pyar Vyar Jeena Sirf Tere Liye The Rising to name just a few

Her exemplary voice has taken her all around the world including to the US UK Europe Africa Australia Far East Middle East and

South America She has performed in some of the most prestigious venues of the world including the Royal Albert Hall London The Kennedy Centre Washington DC Madison Square Gardens The Lincoln Centre New York the Zhongshan Music Hall Beijing and The Esplanade Singapore Putra Jaya World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur among others

Having performed in every inhabited continent there is very little left of the world for Kavita to conquer with her voice She has performed in every nook and corner of India from Punjab to Kanyakumari and Bengal to Gujarat and the Andaman Islands She has performed in the largest concert halls and stadiums and her voice has reached millions of people

touching their hearts as she has sung in almost all the Indian languages including Marathi Gujarati Punjabi Bengali Oriya Assamese Tamil Telugu Malayalam Kannada Bhojpuri Jharkhandi Rajasthani and Konkani She has also sung for several Nepalese and Bangladeshi films Although primarily a playback singer Kavita has not allowed herself to be limited She has sung with orchestras as a soloist she has collaborated with Western artists from the Jazz Popular and Classical fields She has sung ghazals and devotionals She has even sung IndiPop Her classical jugalbandi concert with Pandit Jasraj and Dr L Subramaniam has been released both audio and DVD by Music Today Following her wedding to Dr L Subramaniam she has explored and expanded her artistic range to areas which have never been explored by singers before She was the main featured soloist in the ldquoGlobal Fusionrdquo album released by Warner Bros featuring musicians from all the five continents She has sung as a soloist with orchestras like the Beijing Symphony Orchestra Leipzig Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestra and she has dazzled audiences from around the world with her stage performances recordings and playback singing for the past thirty years singing more than 15000 songs

Bindu Subramaniam

ldquoHauntingrdquo and ldquoHypnoticrdquo are the two words most commonly used to describe Bindu Subramaniamrsquos voice Having been dubbed a ldquothird-generation prodigyrdquo by the press Bindu wrote her first song at seven and has been performing since age twelve She has created a very original sound fusing soft rock and jazz elements with traditional Indian music Her training in Indian and western styles of music have given her a unique sound As a songwriter and composer Bindu Subramaniam has received Honourable Mentions at the 16th Annual Billboard World Song Contest (2009) the 17th Annual Billboard World Song Contest (2010) and was a Top 20 Finalist (Performance) at the 12th Annual Unisong International Song Contest (2009) Bindu is the only Indian artist to receive this accolade

Bindu has toured extensively performing with her family (parents Dr L Subramaniam and Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam and brother Ambi Subramaniam) her band and as a soloist with symphony orchestras Her debut solo album entitled ldquoSurrenderrdquo was released in 2011 on Times Music and was nominated for a GiMA in the Best PopRock Album category In January 2012 Bindu was named by Verve magazine as one of 12 Gen Next Achievers In 2014 she launched a band called SubraMania with her brother Ambi and has performed across India Europe and the US to great critical acclaim Their first single ldquoDays in the Sunrdquo has gone viral followed by releases ldquoEsperanzardquo ldquo7songrdquo and ldquoPeacockrdquo

Bindu also has a masterrsquos degree in law a masterrsquos certificate in songwriting and music business from Berklee and an MPhil in Cultural Studies in Music She currently serves as the Dean of the Subramaniam Academy of Performing Arts

in Bangalore heads the SaPa in schools program which provides music education to over 10000 students in India and has co-written (with Dr L Subramaniam) the SaPa Baby series of music books

Ambi Subramaniam

Ambi Subramaniam gave his first performance at the age of seven and since then has performed in many prestigious venues across the world He has received the Ritz Icon of the Year Award the Rotary Youth Award two GiMAs (Global Indian Music Award for Best Fusion Album and Best Carnatic Instrumental Album) and Big Indian Music Award (for Best Carnatic Album) Hailed as ldquothe new king of Indian classical violinrdquo (The Times of India) Ambi regularly plays duet violin concerts with his father and guru Dr L Subramaniam as well as solo concerts He has performed at the prestigious Dussehra Festival at the Mysore Palace the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad the Lincoln Center Out of Doors Festival the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Chicago the Royal Festival Hall in London the Maximum India Festival at Kennedy the Royal Opera House Muscat and at the Centenary Celebration of the Banglaore Gayana Samaj He was a featured soloist for the Sounds of India program featuring talented instrumentalists from around the country and he has been invited to perform

at TEDx events to expose new audiences to Carnatic music

At age 13 he was invited to present a concert for the then President of India HE APJ Abdul Kalam for the Pravasi Bharitiya Divas He has performed with Dr M Balamuralikrishna Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia and Shankar Mahadevan As a fusion performer he has formed a band called SubraMania with his sister Bindu and has performed extensively with his family (father Dr L Subramaniam mother Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam sister Bindu Subramaniam) and collaborated with Larry Coryell Ernie Watts Corky Siegel and Shankar Mahadevan

As an orchestral soloist he performed lsquoShanti Priyarsquo with the Seattle Symphony in January 2013 He has also performed with the Orchestra Nationale du Lille Sinfonia Baltica the Kwazulu Natal Symphony the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra and the Leipzig Philharmoic Orchestra to name a few Ambi plays Western and Indian violin with equal ease and has appeared for the Associated Board Royal School of Musicrsquos violin exams and has been ranked first securing distinctions and special awards Apart from the violin he has also received distinctions in piano and western classical music and has been a three-time winner of the Philomena Thumbochetty Award for Best Western Classical Violinist

Debashish Bhattacharya

Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya is a world-renowned guitar virtuoso a legend of the slide guitar who is a global inspiration in the contemporary musical scene in India and abroad From the age of four his child-like fascination with a Hawaiian guitar led him to modifying guitars that he has now patented all the while creating a unique playing style that has been mesmerizing audiences and artists for the past four decades

With a prestigious musical lineage that hails back to gurus Pandit Brij Bhushan Kabra Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty and the late Ustad Ali Akbar Khan he has taken this unique musical pedigree to the mainstream He has topped the charts and been featured in the Billboard Songlines and National Geographic and has received numerous awards and accolades such as the 2016 Songlines Music Award 2002 and 2009 Grammy Nominee 2007 BBC Planet Award 2005 Asiatic Society Gold medal and the 1984 President of India Gold Medal His unique take on contemporary compositions has attracted unique music collaborations with legends like 12-time Grammy winner Jerry Douglas African kora legend Ballake Sissoko jazz guitar legend John McLaughlin Moroccan oud legend Dris El Maulumi American Bluesman Bob Brozman British singer Martin Simpson Australian rocker John Butler and many others

Tanmoy Bose

Receiving his early tutelage from the legendary Lt Kanai Dutta Tanmoy became the heralded torchbearer of the Farukkabad gharana ndash Pandit Shankar Ghosh For the past three decades he has been taking lessons from his guru in light of an extremely busy performing and teaching schedule across the globe One of his greatest musical achievements to date having performed with the greatest ambassador of Indian classical music Pandit Ravi Shankar for nearly six years until his death accompanying him regularly around the world

Tanmoy has been an ardent researcher and composer His long tours abroad have given him rare opportunities to interact and play with a wide array of musicians composers choreographers and the like which has allowed him to create musical projects like DHWANI BEYOND BORDERS TAALYAAGNA CHATURANG and MOKSH - based on the virtues of Indian Rhythmic nuances For him music and life

are inseparable Rhythm is his quest of truth and beauty- it transcends all other priorities in his life

Mahesh Krishnamurthy

Mahesh Krishnamurthy started learning mridangam at the age of seven under Thattha Mangalam Chandra Sekhar Menon at Palghat Kerala He then studied under Shekaripuram Ramakrishnan at Palghat and then continued and furthered his mridangam training in Mumbai under the guidance of the eminent Vidhwan Karaikudi Chandramouli who groomed him to be a concert musician for over a decade Krishnamurthy has received additional training under the mridangam maestro Karaikudi Mani in Chennai and he has also had the privilege of accompanying leading musicians such as Mandolin Srinivas Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and Pandit Jasraj among others He is deeply inspired by Dr L Subramaniam who has encouraged and motivated him in

his artistic endeavors and together they share a rich musical understanding that spans over two decades

N Radhakrishnan

For Thripunithura N Radhakrishnan music is in his blood Born into a well-renowned musical family he received his first lessons on the mridangam from his father (the late) G Narayana Swamy He then went on to pursue the Ganabhooshanam and Ganapraveena degrees from Thripunithura RLV College of Music and Sree Swathi Tirunal College of Music Thiruvananthapuram

But his interest was always in the ghatam an instrument so simple in design He began exploring its tonal possibilities at the age of 11 and started playing it shortly after in classic music concerts Since then Radhakrishnan has been accompanying prominent musicians like Dr L Subramaniam (Violin) KV Narayanaswamy M Balamuralikrishna KJ Yesudas TN Krishnan (violin) N Ramani (flute) and KS Narayanaswamy (veena)

In 1997 he won the prestigious Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi award and today Radhakrishnan runs a music school named after his father GN Swamy in Thripunithura where he has started his own ensemble called Laya Vadya Tarangam

Joanne May Conductor

Joanne May is in her ninth year as Assistant Professor of Music and director of the Philharmonic Orchestra chair of the string department and music education instructor at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst Illinois During her tenure at Elmhurst College she founded the annual Elmhurst College World Music Series assisted in writing the course String Improvisation for Educators added three new string faculty members to the department started a secondary instrument string orchestra for music education students began an electric string ensemble conducted the Philharmonic at the Illinois Music Education Conference and set up annual performance tours to high schools in several states Prior to teaching at Elmhurst College May retired from teaching 33 years in public schools in Illinois and Missouri serving as an instructor of strings orchestra band choir general music and as music department chair at Glenbard East High School in suburban Lombard IL She received numerous awards for excellence in teaching including the Mary Hoffman Award for Teaching Excellence by ILMEA Glenbard Township High School District Distinguished Service Award Educator of the Year and Distinguished Service Award from the Illinois American String Teacherrsquos Association and Teacher

Recognition Award for the Presidential Scholar Program in Washington DC by the US Department of Education She is a National Board Certified Teacher and served as President of the Illinois American String Teachers Association and President of the Orchestra Division of ILMEA May is currently national chair of Orchestra Council for NAfME

Elmhurst College Philharmonic Orchestra and Elmhurst Community Singers

The Elmhurst College Philharmonic Orchestra held its first annual World Music Festival in 2011 at the encouragement of guest lecturer Srini Krishnan Headmaster of the School of Music in Chennai India that was founded by AR Rahman composer of Slum Dog Millionaire That festival was such a great success that it subsequently became a regular event on campus transforming into a series in 2013 with multiple events throughout the academic year Featured programs have included ldquoGlobal RhythmsndashMusic of Indiardquo ldquoOleacute The Musical Influence of Spainrdquo ldquoRUSSIArdquo ldquoThe Music of Brazil Italy amp Francerdquo and ldquoKONTRAS Music of Contrastsrdquo Guest artists have included Celtic fiddler Liz Carroll steelpan player Liam Teague Russian cellist Ian Maksin Mullane Healey Godley Irish Dancers and the Mexican band Mariachi Real de Jalisco Important in choosing music for the Elmhurst World Music Festivals has been the requirement that the Philharmonic Orchestra be included in the performances Many world music festivals feature soloists and small ensembles but the Elmhurst festival always seeks to include a fusion of music that can be performed by a traditional symphony orchestra with music that is indigenous to the particular culture Dr L Subramaniam composer of Bharat Symphony has done just this ndash he has written a beautiful work depicting the history of India incorporating the sounds colors and textures of the traditional symphony side by side with singers and instrumentalists particular to India Tabla solo Indian voice guitar classical Indian violin and folk tunes of India are beautifully intertwined into the landscape of the symphony throughout this work Under the direction of Professor Joanne May the Elmhurst Philharmonic Orchestra and Elmhurst Community Singers are comprised of Elmhurst College students and faculty members as well as a number of talented community members The performers have rehearsed throughout the summer to prepare for this Chicago World Music Concert

He has received several awards and honours including the coveted Padma Bhushan and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for ldquoThe Most Creative Artistrdquo from the President of India He has been awarded the ldquoNada Chakravartirdquo (Emperor of Sound) from HH Sri Ganapati Sachchidananda Swami-ji In recognition of his contribution to the world of music he has also received six honorary doctorates

Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam

Undoubtedly one of the favourites of the critics and the masses Kavitarsquos singing career reads like a fairy tale Her exquisite and mellifluous voice wide range and versatility to sing different styles and types of songs has put her in a unique place amongst singers and she has been quoted as a ldquomelody queenrdquo by leading critics and connoisseurs alike Born in Delhi she began her vocal training under Sri Balram Puri (in the Hindustani style of music) at a very young age

Kavita enrolled at St Xavierrsquos College Bombay where she obtained an Honours Degree in Economics While in college she started singing professionally on stage with the great music director and singer Hemant Kumar Mukesh and Manna Dey and then embarked on an illustrious recording career in films in 1971 Her first recording for a Bengali film song was a duet with Lata Mangeshkar Maang Bharo Sajna was her first Hindi film under Sri Laxmikant Pyarelal followed by Pyar Jhukta Nahin Since then she has had an illustrious career and has sung in the following films Mr India Karma Saudagar Khuda Gawah Chaalbaaz 1942 ndash A Love Story Yaarana Mohara Bombay Saaz Khamoshi Pardesh Bhairavi Agnisakshi Prem Agan Kuch Kuch Hota Hai Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan Wajood Hum Dil de Chuke Sanam Taal Hum Saath Saath Hain Vaastav Khoobsurat Gaja Gamini Pukar Dil Chahta Hai Devdas Dil Vil Pyar Vyar Jeena Sirf Tere Liye The Rising to name just a few

Having performed in every inhabited continent there is very little left of the world for Kavita to conquer with her voice She has performed in every nook and corner of India from Punjab to Kanyakumari and Bengal to Gujarat and the Andaman Islands She has performed in the largest concert halls and stadiums and her voice has reached millions of people

touching their hearts as she has sung in almost all the Indian languages including Marathi Gujarati Punjabi Bengali Oriya Assamese Tamil Telugu Malayalam Kannada Bhojpuri Jharkhandi Rajasthani and Konkani She has also sung for several Nepalese and Bangladeshi films Although primarily a playback singer Kavita has not allowed herself to be limited She has sung with orchestras as a soloist she has collaborated with Western artists from the Jazz Popular and Classical fields She has sung ghazals and devotionals She has even sung IndiPop Her classical jugalbandi concert with Pandit Jasraj and Dr L Subramaniam has been released both audio and DVD by Music Today Following her wedding to Dr L Subramaniam she has explored and expanded her artistic range to areas which have never been explored by singers before She was the main featured soloist in the ldquoGlobal Fusionrdquo album released by Warner Bros featuring musicians from all the five continents She has sung as a soloist with orchestras like the Beijing Symphony Orchestra Leipzig Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestra and she has dazzled audiences from around the world with her stage performances recordings and playback singing for the past thirty years singing more than 15000 songs

Bindu Subramaniam

ldquoHauntingrdquo and ldquoHypnoticrdquo are the two words most commonly used to describe Bindu Subramaniamrsquos voice Having been dubbed a ldquothird-generation prodigyrdquo by the press Bindu wrote her first song at seven and has been performing since age twelve She has created a very original sound fusing soft rock and jazz elements with traditional Indian music Her training in Indian and western styles of music have given her a unique sound As a songwriter and composer Bindu Subramaniam has received Honourable Mentions at the 16th Annual Billboard World Song Contest (2009) the 17th Annual Billboard World Song Contest (2010) and was a Top 20 Finalist (Performance) at the 12th Annual Unisong International Song Contest (2009) Bindu is the only Indian artist to receive this accolade

As an orchestral soloist he performed lsquoShanti Priyarsquo with the Seattle Symphony in January 2013 He has also performed with the Orchestra Nationale du Lille Sinfonia Baltica the Kwazulu Natal Symphony the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra and the Leipzig Philharmoic Orchestra to name a few Ambi plays Western and Indian violin with equal ease and has appeared for the Associated Board Royal School of Musicrsquos violin exams and has been ranked first securing distinctions and special awards Apart from the violin he has also received distinctions in piano and western classical music and has been a three-time winner of the Philomena Thumbochetty Award for Best Western Classical Violinist

Debashish Bhattacharya

Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya is a world-renowned guitar virtuoso a legend of the slide guitar who is a global inspiration in the contemporary musical scene in India and abroad From the age of four his child-like fascination with a Hawaiian guitar led him to modifying guitars that he has now patented all the while creating a unique playing style that has been mesmerizing audiences and artists for the past four decades

With a prestigious musical lineage that hails back to gurus Pandit Brij Bhushan Kabra Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty and the late Ustad Ali Akbar Khan he has taken this unique musical pedigree to the mainstream He has topped the charts and been featured in the Billboard Songlines and National Geographic and has received numerous awards and accolades such as the 2016 Songlines Music Award 2002 and 2009 Grammy Nominee 2007 BBC Planet Award 2005 Asiatic Society Gold medal and the 1984 President of India Gold Medal His unique take on contemporary compositions has attracted unique music collaborations with legends like 12-time Grammy winner Jerry Douglas African kora legend Ballake Sissoko jazz guitar legend John McLaughlin Moroccan oud legend Dris El Maulumi American Bluesman Bob Brozman British singer Martin Simpson Australian rocker John Butler and many others

Tanmoy Bose

Receiving his early tutelage from the legendary Lt Kanai Dutta Tanmoy became the heralded torchbearer of the Farukkabad gharana ndash Pandit Shankar Ghosh For the past three decades he has been taking lessons from his guru in light of an extremely busy performing and teaching schedule across the globe One of his greatest musical achievements to date having performed with the greatest ambassador of Indian classical music Pandit Ravi Shankar for nearly six years until his death accompanying him regularly around the world

Tanmoy has been an ardent researcher and composer His long tours abroad have given him rare opportunities to interact and play with a wide array of musicians composers choreographers and the like which has allowed him to create musical projects like DHWANI BEYOND BORDERS TAALYAAGNA CHATURANG and MOKSH - based on the virtues of Indian Rhythmic nuances For him music and life

are inseparable Rhythm is his quest of truth and beauty- it transcends all other priorities in his life

Mahesh Krishnamurthy

Mahesh Krishnamurthy started learning mridangam at the age of seven under Thattha Mangalam Chandra Sekhar Menon at Palghat Kerala He then studied under Shekaripuram Ramakrishnan at Palghat and then continued and furthered his mridangam training in Mumbai under the guidance of the eminent Vidhwan Karaikudi Chandramouli who groomed him to be a concert musician for over a decade Krishnamurthy has received additional training under the mridangam maestro Karaikudi Mani in Chennai and he has also had the privilege of accompanying leading musicians such as Mandolin Srinivas Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and Pandit Jasraj among others He is deeply inspired by Dr L Subramaniam who has encouraged and motivated him in

his artistic endeavors and together they share a rich musical understanding that spans over two decades

N Radhakrishnan

For Thripunithura N Radhakrishnan music is in his blood Born into a well-renowned musical family he received his first lessons on the mridangam from his father (the late) G Narayana Swamy He then went on to pursue the Ganabhooshanam and Ganapraveena degrees from Thripunithura RLV College of Music and Sree Swathi Tirunal College of Music Thiruvananthapuram

But his interest was always in the ghatam an instrument so simple in design He began exploring its tonal possibilities at the age of 11 and started playing it shortly after in classic music concerts Since then Radhakrishnan has been accompanying prominent musicians like Dr L Subramaniam (Violin) KV Narayanaswamy M Balamuralikrishna KJ Yesudas TN Krishnan (violin) N Ramani (flute) and KS Narayanaswamy (veena)

In 1997 he won the prestigious Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi award and today Radhakrishnan runs a music school named after his father GN Swamy in Thripunithura where he has started his own ensemble called Laya Vadya Tarangam

Joanne May Conductor

Joanne May is in her ninth year as Assistant Professor of Music and director of the Philharmonic Orchestra chair of the string department and music education instructor at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst Illinois During her tenure at Elmhurst College she founded the annual Elmhurst College World Music Series assisted in writing the course String Improvisation for Educators added three new string faculty members to the department started a secondary instrument string orchestra for music education students began an electric string ensemble conducted the Philharmonic at the Illinois Music Education Conference and set up annual performance tours to high schools in several states Prior to teaching at Elmhurst College May retired from teaching 33 years in public schools in Illinois and Missouri serving as an instructor of strings orchestra band choir general music and as music department chair at Glenbard East High School in suburban Lombard IL She received numerous awards for excellence in teaching including the Mary Hoffman Award for Teaching Excellence by ILMEA Glenbard Township High School District Distinguished Service Award Educator of the Year and Distinguished Service Award from the Illinois American String Teacherrsquos Association and Teacher

Recognition Award for the Presidential Scholar Program in Washington DC by the US Department of Education She is a National Board Certified Teacher and served as President of the Illinois American String Teachers Association and President of the Orchestra Division of ILMEA May is currently national chair of Orchestra Council for NAfME

Elmhurst College Philharmonic Orchestra and Elmhurst Community Singers

The Elmhurst College Philharmonic Orchestra held its first annual World Music Festival in 2011 at the encouragement of guest lecturer Srini Krishnan Headmaster of the School of Music in Chennai India that was founded by AR Rahman composer of Slum Dog Millionaire That festival was such a great success that it subsequently became a regular event on campus transforming into a series in 2013 with multiple events throughout the academic year Featured programs have included ldquoGlobal RhythmsndashMusic of Indiardquo ldquoOleacute The Musical Influence of Spainrdquo ldquoRUSSIArdquo ldquoThe Music of Brazil Italy amp Francerdquo and ldquoKONTRAS Music of Contrastsrdquo Guest artists have included Celtic fiddler Liz Carroll steelpan player Liam Teague Russian cellist Ian Maksin Mullane Healey Godley Irish Dancers and the Mexican band Mariachi Real de Jalisco Important in choosing music for the Elmhurst World Music Festivals has been the requirement that the Philharmonic Orchestra be included in the performances Many world music festivals feature soloists and small ensembles but the Elmhurst festival always seeks to include a fusion of music that can be performed by a traditional symphony orchestra with music that is indigenous to the particular culture Dr L Subramaniam composer of Bharat Symphony has done just this ndash he has written a beautiful work depicting the history of India incorporating the sounds colors and textures of the traditional symphony side by side with singers and instrumentalists particular to India Tabla solo Indian voice guitar classical Indian violin and folk tunes of India are beautifully intertwined into the landscape of the symphony throughout this work Under the direction of Professor Joanne May the Elmhurst Philharmonic Orchestra and Elmhurst Community Singers are comprised of Elmhurst College students and faculty members as well as a number of talented community members The performers have rehearsed throughout the summer to prepare for this Chicago World Music Concert

Mahesh Krishnamurthy started learning mridangam at the age of seven under Thattha Mangalam Chandra Sekhar Menon at Palghat Kerala He then studied under Shekaripuram Ramakrishnan at Palghat and then continued and furthered his mridangam training in Mumbai under the guidance of the eminent Vidhwan Karaikudi Chandramouli who groomed him to be a concert musician for over a decade Krishnamurthy has received additional training under the mridangam maestro Karaikudi Mani in Chennai and he has also had the privilege of accompanying leading musicians such as Mandolin Srinivas Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and Pandit Jasraj among others He is deeply inspired by Dr L Subramaniam who has encouraged and motivated him in

his artistic endeavors and together they share a rich musical understanding that spans over two decades

For Thripunithura N Radhakrishnan music is in his blood Born into a well-renowned musical family he received his first lessons on the mridangam from his father (the late) G Narayana Swamy He then went on to pursue the Ganabhooshanam and Ganapraveena degrees from Thripunithura RLV College of Music and Sree Swathi Tirunal College of Music Thiruvananthapuram

But his interest was always in the ghatam an instrument so simple in design He began exploring its tonal possibilities at the age of 11 and started playing it shortly after in classic music concerts Since then Radhakrishnan has been accompanying prominent musicians like Dr L Subramaniam (Violin) KV Narayanaswamy M Balamuralikrishna KJ Yesudas TN Krishnan (violin) N Ramani (flute) and KS Narayanaswamy (veena)

In 1997 he won the prestigious Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi award and today Radhakrishnan runs a music school named after his father GN Swamy in Thripunithura where he has started his own ensemble called Laya Vadya Tarangam

Joanne May Conductor

Joanne May is in her ninth year as Assistant Professor of Music and director of the Philharmonic Orchestra chair of the string department and music education instructor at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst Illinois During her tenure at Elmhurst College she founded the annual Elmhurst College World Music Series assisted in writing the course String Improvisation for Educators added three new string faculty members to the department started a secondary instrument string orchestra for music education students began an electric string ensemble conducted the Philharmonic at the Illinois Music Education Conference and set up annual performance tours to high schools in several states Prior to teaching at Elmhurst College May retired from teaching 33 years in public schools in Illinois and Missouri serving as an instructor of strings orchestra band choir general music and as music department chair at Glenbard East High School in suburban Lombard IL She received numerous awards for excellence in teaching including the Mary Hoffman Award for Teaching Excellence by ILMEA Glenbard Township High School District Distinguished Service Award Educator of the Year and Distinguished Service Award from the Illinois American String Teacherrsquos Association and Teacher

Recognition Award for the Presidential Scholar Program in Washington DC by the US Department of Education She is a National Board Certified Teacher and served as President of the Illinois American String Teachers Association and President of the Orchestra Division of ILMEA May is currently national chair of Orchestra Council for NAfME

Elmhurst College Philharmonic Orchestra and Elmhurst Community Singers

The Elmhurst College Philharmonic Orchestra held its first annual World Music Festival in 2011 at the encouragement of guest lecturer Srini Krishnan Headmaster of the School of Music in Chennai India that was founded by AR Rahman composer of Slum Dog Millionaire That festival was such a great success that it subsequently became a regular event on campus transforming into a series in 2013 with multiple events throughout the academic year Featured programs have included ldquoGlobal RhythmsndashMusic of Indiardquo ldquoOleacute The Musical Influence of Spainrdquo ldquoRUSSIArdquo ldquoThe Music of Brazil Italy amp Francerdquo and ldquoKONTRAS Music of Contrastsrdquo Guest artists have included Celtic fiddler Liz Carroll steelpan player Liam Teague Russian cellist Ian Maksin Mullane Healey Godley Irish Dancers and the Mexican band Mariachi Real de Jalisco Important in choosing music for the Elmhurst World Music Festivals has been the requirement that the Philharmonic Orchestra be included in the performances Many world music festivals feature soloists and small ensembles but the Elmhurst festival always seeks to include a fusion of music that can be performed by a traditional symphony orchestra with music that is indigenous to the particular culture Dr L Subramaniam composer of Bharat Symphony has done just this ndash he has written a beautiful work depicting the history of India incorporating the sounds colors and textures of the traditional symphony side by side with singers and instrumentalists particular to India Tabla solo Indian voice guitar classical Indian violin and folk tunes of India are beautifully intertwined into the landscape of the symphony throughout this work Under the direction of Professor Joanne May the Elmhurst Philharmonic Orchestra and Elmhurst Community Singers are comprised of Elmhurst College students and faculty members as well as a number of talented community members The performers have rehearsed throughout the summer to prepare for this Chicago World Music Concert

Ambi Subramaniam

Ambi Subramaniam gave his first performance at the age of seven and since then has performed in many prestigious venues across the world He has received the Ritz Icon of the Year Award the Rotary Youth Award two GiMAs (Global Indian Music Award for Best Fusion Album and Best Carnatic Instrumental Album) and Big Indian Music Award (for Best Carnatic Album) Hailed as ldquothe new king of Indian classical violinrdquo (The Times of India) Ambi regularly plays duet violin concerts with his father and guru Dr L Subramaniam as well as solo concerts He has performed at the prestigious Dussehra Festival at the Mysore Palace the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad the Lincoln Center Out of Doors Festival the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Chicago the Royal Festival Hall in London the Maximum India Festival at Kennedy the Royal Opera House Muscat and at the Centenary Celebration of the Banglaore Gayana Samaj He was a featured soloist for the Sounds of India program featuring talented instrumentalists from around the country and he has been invited to perform

at TEDx events to expose new audiences to Carnatic music

With a prestigious musical lineage that hails back to gurus Pandit Brij Bhushan Kabra Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty and the late Ustad Ali Akbar Khan he has taken this unique musical pedigree to the mainstream He has topped the charts and been featured in the Billboard Songlines and National Geographic and has received numerous awards and accolades such as the 2016 Songlines Music Award 2002 and 2009 Grammy Nominee 2007 BBC Planet Award 2005 Asiatic Society Gold medal and the 1984 President of India Gold Medal His unique take on contemporary compositions has attracted unique music collaborations with legends like 12-time Grammy winner Jerry Douglas African kora legend Ballake Sissoko jazz guitar legend John McLaughlin Moroccan oud legend Dris El Maulumi American Bluesman Bob Brozman British singer Martin Simpson Australian rocker John Butler and many others

Receiving his early tutelage from the legendary Lt Kanai Dutta Tanmoy became the heralded torchbearer of the Farukkabad gharana ndash Pandit Shankar Ghosh For the past three decades he has been taking lessons from his guru in light of an extremely busy performing and teaching schedule across the globe One of his greatest musical achievements to date having performed with the greatest ambassador of Indian classical music Pandit Ravi Shankar for nearly six years until his death accompanying him regularly around the world

Tanmoy has been an ardent researcher and composer His long tours abroad have given him rare opportunities to interact and play with a wide array of musicians composers choreographers and the like which has allowed him to create musical projects like DHWANI BEYOND BORDERS TAALYAAGNA CHATURANG and MOKSH - based on the virtues of Indian Rhythmic nuances For him music and life

are inseparable Rhythm is his quest of truth and beauty- it transcends all other priorities in his life

Mahesh Krishnamurthy

Mahesh Krishnamurthy started learning mridangam at the age of seven under Thattha Mangalam Chandra Sekhar Menon at Palghat Kerala He then studied under Shekaripuram Ramakrishnan at Palghat and then continued and furthered his mridangam training in Mumbai under the guidance of the eminent Vidhwan Karaikudi Chandramouli who groomed him to be a concert musician for over a decade Krishnamurthy has received additional training under the mridangam maestro Karaikudi Mani in Chennai and he has also had the privilege of accompanying leading musicians such as Mandolin Srinivas Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and Pandit Jasraj among others He is deeply inspired by Dr L Subramaniam who has encouraged and motivated him in

his artistic endeavors and together they share a rich musical understanding that spans over two decades

For Thripunithura N Radhakrishnan music is in his blood Born into a well-renowned musical family he received his first lessons on the mridangam from his father (the late) G Narayana Swamy He then went on to pursue the Ganabhooshanam and Ganapraveena degrees from Thripunithura RLV College of Music and Sree Swathi Tirunal College of Music Thiruvananthapuram

But his interest was always in the ghatam an instrument so simple in design He began exploring its tonal possibilities at the age of 11 and started playing it shortly after in classic music concerts Since then Radhakrishnan has been accompanying prominent musicians like Dr L Subramaniam (Violin) KV Narayanaswamy M Balamuralikrishna KJ Yesudas TN Krishnan (violin) N Ramani (flute) and KS Narayanaswamy (veena)

In 1997 he won the prestigious Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi award and today Radhakrishnan runs a music school named after his father GN Swamy in Thripunithura where he has started his own ensemble called Laya Vadya Tarangam

Joanne May Conductor

Joanne May is in her ninth year as Assistant Professor of Music and director of the Philharmonic Orchestra chair of the string department and music education instructor at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst Illinois During her tenure at Elmhurst College she founded the annual Elmhurst College World Music Series assisted in writing the course String Improvisation for Educators added three new string faculty members to the department started a secondary instrument string orchestra for music education students began an electric string ensemble conducted the Philharmonic at the Illinois Music Education Conference and set up annual performance tours to high schools in several states Prior to teaching at Elmhurst College May retired from teaching 33 years in public schools in Illinois and Missouri serving as an instructor of strings orchestra band choir general music and as music department chair at Glenbard East High School in suburban Lombard IL She received numerous awards for excellence in teaching including the Mary Hoffman Award for Teaching Excellence by ILMEA Glenbard Township High School District Distinguished Service Award Educator of the Year and Distinguished Service Award from the Illinois American String Teacherrsquos Association and Teacher

Recognition Award for the Presidential Scholar Program in Washington DC by the US Department of Education She is a National Board Certified Teacher and served as President of the Illinois American String Teachers Association and President of the Orchestra Division of ILMEA May is currently national chair of Orchestra Council for NAfME

Elmhurst College Philharmonic Orchestra and Elmhurst Community Singers

The Elmhurst College Philharmonic Orchestra held its first annual World Music Festival in 2011 at the encouragement of guest lecturer Srini Krishnan Headmaster of the School of Music in Chennai India that was founded by AR Rahman composer of Slum Dog Millionaire That festival was such a great success that it subsequently became a regular event on campus transforming into a series in 2013 with multiple events throughout the academic year Featured programs have included ldquoGlobal RhythmsndashMusic of Indiardquo ldquoOleacute The Musical Influence of Spainrdquo ldquoRUSSIArdquo ldquoThe Music of Brazil Italy amp Francerdquo and ldquoKONTRAS Music of Contrastsrdquo Guest artists have included Celtic fiddler Liz Carroll steelpan player Liam Teague Russian cellist Ian Maksin Mullane Healey Godley Irish Dancers and the Mexican band Mariachi Real de Jalisco Important in choosing music for the Elmhurst World Music Festivals has been the requirement that the Philharmonic Orchestra be included in the performances Many world music festivals feature soloists and small ensembles but the Elmhurst festival always seeks to include a fusion of music that can be performed by a traditional symphony orchestra with music that is indigenous to the particular culture Dr L Subramaniam composer of Bharat Symphony has done just this ndash he has written a beautiful work depicting the history of India incorporating the sounds colors and textures of the traditional symphony side by side with singers and instrumentalists particular to India Tabla solo Indian voice guitar classical Indian violin and folk tunes of India are beautifully intertwined into the landscape of the symphony throughout this work Under the direction of Professor Joanne May the Elmhurst Philharmonic Orchestra and Elmhurst Community Singers are comprised of Elmhurst College students and faculty members as well as a number of talented community members The performers have rehearsed throughout the summer to prepare for this Chicago World Music Concert

Elmhurst College Philharmonic Orchestra and Elmhurst Community Singers

The Elmhurst College Philharmonic Orchestra held its first annual World Music Festival in 2011 at the encouragement of guest lecturer Srini Krishnan Headmaster of the School of Music in Chennai India that was founded by AR Rahman composer of Slum Dog Millionaire That festival was such a great success that it subsequently became a regular event on campus transforming into a series in 2013 with multiple events throughout the academic year Featured programs have included ldquoGlobal RhythmsndashMusic of Indiardquo ldquoOleacute The Musical Influence of Spainrdquo ldquoRUSSIArdquo ldquoThe Music of Brazil Italy amp Francerdquo and ldquoKONTRAS Music of Contrastsrdquo Guest artists have included Celtic fiddler Liz Carroll steelpan player Liam Teague Russian cellist Ian Maksin Mullane Healey Godley Irish Dancers and the Mexican band Mariachi Real de Jalisco Important in choosing music for the Elmhurst World Music Festivals has been the requirement that the Philharmonic Orchestra be included in the performances Many world music festivals feature soloists and small ensembles but the Elmhurst festival always seeks to include a fusion of music that can be performed by a traditional symphony orchestra with music that is indigenous to the particular culture Dr L Subramaniam composer of Bharat Symphony has done just this ndash he has written a beautiful work depicting the history of India incorporating the sounds colors and textures of the traditional symphony side by side with singers and instrumentalists particular to India Tabla solo Indian voice guitar classical Indian violin and folk tunes of India are beautifully intertwined into the landscape of the symphony throughout this work Under the direction of Professor Joanne May the Elmhurst Philharmonic Orchestra and Elmhurst Community Singers are comprised of Elmhurst College students and faculty members as well as a number of talented community members The performers have rehearsed throughout the summer to prepare for this Chicago World Music Concert
