5-Minute Shakespeare: “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” TASK: Working in groups of 3-5 people you will create your own 5-Minute Shakespeare version of the play. Your play must include all three story-lines and must demonstrate the relationships between the main characters: Theseus, Hippolyta, Egeus, Hermia, Lysander, Helena, Demetrius, Oberon, Puck, Titania, Bottom. PROCESS: 1. In your group brainstorm the key events of the play – which ones must be included to maintain the integrity of the story? 2. Begin writing – your script must take no longer than 5 minutes to perform 3. Assign roles – each person will be responsible for several roles – decide how you will distinguish between them on stage 4. Choose props and costumes – remember that these should enhance your performance, not distract from it 5. Rehearse! Rehearse! Rehearse! – lines should be memorized SCHEDULE: 2 periods to write your script 2 periods to rehearse your play 1 period for presentations EVALUATION: Accuracy/Understanding – does your script remain true to the original? Preparedness – do all actors seem comfortable with lines? Is rehearsal evident? Performance – was the performance engaging and entertaining? Were the props appropriate and did they enhance the story?
