Secret #1 - Setting SMART Goals

Do you feel frustrated, stressed, confused, like you need help?

Understanding and then applying Neuro-Linguistic Programing into our life, andinto our teaching, will dramatically improve how we can naturally teach studentsusing psychological strategies with advanced learning systems.

So what is Neuro-Linguistic Programing - NLP - and how can it help us?

NLP is learning how we think (neuro), how we communicate (linguistic) and howwe achieve results (programing).

Let’s begin by outlining exactly what our desired outcome is. What goals do wewant to achieve? Whether our goals are simple or complex, wanting to buildbetter rapport with our students and see improved results begins with settingSMART Goals. Goal Setting is the greatest motivation for achievement.

In working with students, you can help them understand how to set SMARTGoals and show them how to be happy, more confident communicators andachieve successful results using the SMART formula for Goal Setting.

“Setting SMART Goals” Specific - what is the goal you want to achieve Measurable - how will you know when you’ve done it Attainable - has anyone ever done it before Relevant - does this really matter to you in your life Time bound - when will you have achieved your goal

At times we feel overwhelmed that we do not have the ability to “FIX” theproblems that our students are having. The journey to helping your studenttravel the road to success begins with the first step.

The first step to helping your student achieve success is to understand yourstudents learning styles, abilities, emotional issues, attitudes and desires.

Let your student achieve their full potential - feel inspired, confident andmotivated by focusing on what they DO want. With Neuro-Linguistic Programing(NLP) you will get results that will last a lifetime.

In the Ultimate Music Theory Certification Course, you will learn more aboutrapport building, matching physiology and your filters.

Secret #2 - Connect with Confidence

At times we feel overwhelmed, nervous, uncomfortable, confused, jealous, lost...

How can we help our students learn how to focus, take charge and clearlyprocess the necessary steps to Connect with Confidence? Neuro-LinguisticPrograming Techniques builds confidence in how we look, sound, act and feel.

Look Confident - Think of someone who looks confident. It might be an adult, amovie star, a friend... anyone. What do they do to look confident? If I standnervously and slouch, do I look confident? No. How do you show confidence? How do you do your hair, what do you wear? To look confident, stand tall andstill (not fidgety), use good posture, chin up, head straight and connect with eyecontact. Take a deep breath and believe in yourself as being confident. SMILE!

Sound Confident - Think of someone who sounds confident. Have you everheard them talking on the phone? What they say and how they say it makesthem sound confident. Speaking in a soft volume, high pitch, nervous tone andhesitant voice does NOT present confidence. It’s important to speak openly andhonestly in a medium volume, lower pitch, happy tone using an excited voice thateffectively communicates the message and sounds confident.

Act Confidently - We all have days when we don’t feel very confident. Likeevery one else seems to have confidence but us. In order for us to feelconfident, we want to model someone we admire. Look up to the left and think ofa visual image of someone who acts confidently. Now look up to the right andput yourself into that character. You are that confident fabulous person. You areempowered to look, sound and feel confident and have all of these skills.

Anchor Confidence - Use your right hand thumb and index finger to make theOK sign. Your other 3 fingers are pointing straight up. That’s your anchor sign. When you feel that you have these feelings of confidence - remember what youlook, sound and feel like - get that visual image, now anchor confidence, (thatfeeling), using your OK sign. Excellent.

Circle of Excellence - Imagine a large circle on the floor in front of you. This isyour own Circle of Excellence. Think of a person who is brave and confident.Imagine that you are that brave, confident person and step into the Circle ofExcellence. What would they say or do or feel? Now step out of the Circle ofExcellence. Describe how you look, sound and act to show that you areconnecting with confidence. Anchor that feeling with your OK sign. Use yourCircle of Excellence so that you will always Connect with Confidence!

Secret #3 - The Power of Effective Feedback

Sometimes students get nervous or confused during a lesson, preparing for arecital, festival or even when performing or writing an exam. What theyexperience during a lesson, “Your Effective Feedback”, will set the tone for howthey accept, interpret and understand feedback from others.

As teachers, one of the most important parts of communication with our studentsis the power of effective feedback. The words we use, the actions we take andthe pitch and volume of our communication will all determine the results of ourfeedback. Our teaching influence will apply to all aspects of our students’ lives.Teaching them how to analyze feedback is a massive responsibility.

The meaning of the message (our feedback) is the response it elicits: how ourstudents understand, perceive, hear and feel about the message. It is ourresponsibility as teachers to help students learn how to learn, and how toimprove their skills. It is essential that we understand how to give feedback andmore importantly that we understand the Power of Effective Feedback.

“The Power of Effective Feedback”

Imagine you’re a scientist doing experiments. If every time something didn’twork and you gave up, how would anything new ever be made? As you discoverwhat hasn’t worked, think about what DID work. What could you do differentlynext time? What is the overall positive outcome? This is a Feedback Sandwich.

The goal is to highlight the positive intention, the benefit. So even if things lookor sound out of place, if you look hard enough, there is something good there.

What you want to be teaching them is a different response to criticism ornegative experiences. We want them to respond with “OK, what did I learn?”

“There is no failure only feedback”

Think about something that you have put in the ‘failure’ category in your life.Imagine you could physically take it out of this box marked failure and put it intothe box marked learning. What have you learned from this experience? Howhave you grown as a person? What will you do differently now as a result?

What positive purpose did the learning have for you? You need to be able to dothis yourself in order to be able to teach the Power of Effective Feedback.

Secret #4 - Metaphors and Music Game

Let’s explore indirect methods of questioning. Students, when asked a directquestion, are more anxious about answering the question correctly, getting the‘right answer’, rather than telling us what they really believe. It is essential thatwe connect with who they are and what they are dealing with at the moment.

“Metaphors and Music Build Rapport with Your Students”

Metaphors are when you use one thing to represent another. This Metaphorsand Music Game will help you build rapport in getting to know how your studentsees, hears, feels and thinks about things through images.

Game - Using the Whiteboard and colored markers, ask your student to write thenote/rest values for whole, half, quarter and eighth. Pick a color and draw a noteor rest value in 4/4 time representing themselves and members in their family.

My student choose a red whole note for herself. When I asked her why, Jillianreplied “because I have the most love in me”. Her answer showed that shevalues herself as being strong, even though she is “the baby” in the family.

As she continued, I asked, who’s the blue half note? Jillian said, “Oh that’s mydad, blue is his favorite color, and he always gives me the best hugs”. Next wasa purple half rest that she drew on the other side of herself (her whole note).“That’s my cat Bootsie who loves to sleep with me and gives me the best kisses”.

Interesting how her dad and her cat are bothvalued as the same (2 beats), one on eitherside of her, and also how she associatesphysical affection from both of them.

Jillian used kinesthetic language in hercommunication. After completing the exercise, she went on to tap the rhythm and count outloud choosing bright yellow chop sticks.

Jillian was open and honest about her feelings as it was not a questionnaire withright or wrong answers. We were just playing a game - Metaphors and Music.

Empower students to know that they have a choice on how they feel. We canbuild rapport as we can identify what’s important to them, the language they useand how they see, hear, feel and think about things through images.

Secret #5 - State Management & Anchor

State Management is Mind and Body connections using physiological change tolead mental change and vice versa, using the NLP Technique - Anchoring.

State - Think about a time when you feel happy. Imagine yourself in the moment. What was your physiology? Become aware of every part of your body. Mentallyanchor it. Imagine taking a picture of yourself when you are really happy.

Break state - Think about when you feel really unhappy, worried or nervous andassociate into that feeling. When you are unhappy, what is your body position?Associate into it, adopt the physiology. How do you look? Take a mental picture.

Break state - This is actually a very useful tip for both yourself and your student. When things get a bit ‘heavy’ or uncomfortable, teach them how to ‘break state’.An effective break state exercise is to shake like a dog so every bit of you moves.

This is an extremely good trick to teach kids. Imagine a student is being nervous.Get them to recognize the physiology that goes with that state. When they knowhow to flip to the confident physiology, in an instant they can convince the‘nervous bully’ that they are not prepared to be a victim. The bully will move on.

Each student is different so you need to know their normal. If they look sad, thatmay be their normal. Increase awareness of how you are when you are happyand how you are when you are sad.

We can change our state instantly by simply looking up. “Chin up!” I’m sure yourmother said that to you. Why does it work? It is because when we look up wemove our focus away from the center of our body where our feelings live.

When we look up to the left we recall happier times. When we look up to the rightwe can construct a solution to what’s troubling us. By looking down all we can dois dwell on it further. To be solution focused, we need to look up.

In order to get in touch with the feeling of confidence, my student Jillian uses hereye glasses as her anchor.  She touches the side of her glasses to put her in thestate of "I am in control. It's easy."  The anchor of her glasses helps her feel theglasses as she can now grasp concepts and feels more confident.

Homework – establish an anchor for yourself. When your student has reallymade progress in their lesson, ANCHOR that feeling of success in your teaching.
