PLEASE NOTE: SUPERVISION OF STUDENTS IS BETWEEN 8.30am and 3.30pm ON SCHOOL DAYS.

From the Principal Disco Congratulations to the P&F committee and all involved in the disco held last Friday evening. It was definitely a great success. We thank everyone in the community who supported this event. Year 4 Camp Our happy campers returned from their camp on Tuesday afternoon having spent two days and one night at the Briars in Mornington. Despite the wet weather, the students managed to enjoy all the activities and each others‟ company. A huge thank you to the staff who attended and most especially to the two parents who re-organised their work schedules to support our camp program. Thank you Mr Fuga, Mr Gullone, Mr Watson, Mrs Cannatelli, Mrs Marotta, Mrs DiStefano and Mrs Hodgson. We hope all adults and children have now fully recovered and caught up on sleep. Beginning of Year Testing In the past our school has used the first two days of the beginning of the year to complete individual testing of students. This year we trialed a different system and assessed the students during the term, however we found that this was not successful as it took too long to complete the testing which resulted in programs being implemented later in the term. Therefore, next year we are returning to the previous system and will be using the first two days of the school year to complete this process. Students in Years 1-6 will be given a time to come to school on one of the days, either Tuesday 30

th January or Wednesday

31st January, to allow for the testing to take place. All students, including Prep, will formally resume school on Thursday 1

st

February. Families will receive their allocated testing time with their child‟s report in December. Thank you everyone for your patience and understanding. Child Safety- Parent Responsibilities Just a gentle reminder to all our parents that we have a Parent Code of Conduct here at St Damian‟s which frames expectations of everyone in the community, most especially how interactions occur with all members of the community, ie staff, students and parents. There is an expectation within this code that all interactions be done in a respectful manner. I remind parents that should there be situations where students are having difficulties, it is not appropriate for parents to take matters into their own hands. As part of the Child Safety Standards, which is law, there is a responsibility on everyone to ensure that all children, staff and parents/guardians, feel and are safe. Therefore difficulties should be referred to teachers or the school to deal with and resolve. If parents have misplaced or lost the Code of Conduct sent out to all families earlier in the year, please contact the school office for a replacement. Collective School Board Meeting Several Education Boards from across our N.E. Zone met last Wednesday evening at St Mary‟s Primary School to hear a presentation from the Catholic Education Office regarding funding to Catholic Schools into the future. The two presenters talked about the implications of the ten year funding proposal. They also talked about the committee, which has just been established, appointed to look into the SES (Social Economic Standing) which has been used to determine funding. I am sure that you are all aware of the concerns expressed by CEM around the imbalance of funding based on the SES scores. I am sure we will hear more within the next twelve months. I thank Andrew McGregor who attended the meeting with Mrs Rubira and myself to represent our school. Prep Information Evening Last night we held our Prep Information Evening. It was well attended and it was a pleasure to meet all the families that will join our St Damian Community in 2018. Thank you to the Prep teachers who led the evening, Mrs Stubbs and Mr Diez for their input into the evening, the School Leadership for their support, to our Learning Support Officers for organizing the refreshments and to our students for helping set up. A real team effort. We look forward to the first orientation session for our new preps on Tuesday November 15

th November.

All our students are preparing for this wonderful community event which celebrates our faith. St Damian‟s school is a catholic school where important religious events are celebrated. As this is part of what we do here at St Damian‟s, it is an expectation that all students attend and participate on the night. If there is a valid reason as to why students are not able to attend then parents should contact their child‟s teacher in writing with an explanation. School Closure Day Next Monday, November 6

th and Tuesday, November 7

th, the school will be closed due to Report Writing time and the

Melbourne Cup Public Holiday. I hope our community enjoys the long weekend.

Staff News Mrs Aoife McCarthy has been appointed Deputy Principal of St John‟s, Footscray from 2018 and will therefore leave St Damian‟s at the end of the year. Whilst we all wish Aoife our warmest congratulations on her appointment and know that she will be an outstanding leader in her new school, we are very sad to lose her from St Damian‟s. I am sure you will join me and the staff in congratulating Aoife, and thank her for the wonderful contribution she has made to our school in the past seven years. St John‟s is indeed fortunate to have such an experienced and capable leader in their school next year. We have advertised for the position of REL and hope to make an appointment as soon as possible.

Prayer for the Week

We pray for all those dear to us who have gone to their eternal life. In Your loving mercy, Father, be pleased to receive them in Your heavenly company. Amen

Have a great week,

Rosanna

4DA “TOGETHER EVERYONE

ACHIEVES MORE!!!” Our inquiry unit for Term 4 is Together Everyone Achieves More. We recently

attended camp at “The Briars” in Mt Martha with the entire year 4 cohort. We made

loads of connections between our camp experience and our inquiry unit.

In our cabin group, some of us made a fun game to get to

know each other. We learnt how to work with each other

without fighting.

When we did the Hut Building, if we didn’t work together as a team, we would have all been VERY wet!

You had to wear a safety harness for

the Flying Fox. If no one helped you

to put it on, you could not go on.

That’s teamwork. The Giant Swing used a lot of team-

work. We had to pull a heavy black

rope to lift people into the air. We

showed cooperation and kindness and

really stuck together as a team.

The Low Rope activity is all

about walking on tricky ropes;

two people have to spot you or

make sure you don’t fall, and

that leads to cooperation. We all listened to each

other’s ideas and no-one was

left out during construction

of our hut.

Barb, our camp

cook, was amazed

at how well the

children and adults

all worked well

together to serve

up meals and help

clean up

afterwards.

P&F News

On behalf of PF committee we want to say a big thank you

to all parent helpers on the night and for the students and

their families who came along, dressed up and made the

night a huge success.

Parents & Friends

AGM – 7.30pm on 27TH November 2017 WE NEED YOU!

The Parents and Friends Committee needs your help.

For us to be able to give our children the opportunity to have fun events like sausage siz-

zles, Hot Cross Buns morning tea, fun-a-thon, Mother’s and Father’s day stalls and

Halloween Disco, we need mum, dads grandparents etc to join our committee.

All these events take time to plan and as we all lead busy lives with work, children etc. it

would be great if everyone could give a small amount of time rather than left to a small few.

You can even do some photocopying or other small jobs which help the committee.

We need as many parents as possible to join the Parents and Friends Committee in any way

you can.

Without your support our children will miss out on these fun events.

If you can assist in any way please come to the Parents and Friends AGM on the 27th

November at 7.30pm.

We look forward to seeing many new faces.
