PASTOR’S LETTER The Mysteries of the Rosary, Chapter 36: The Bap!sm of Jesus in the Jordan… Humility is one of the most important virtues. Jesus Christ is the greatest example of humility there is. This is

shown in his being bap!zed by Saint John the Bap!st. Jesus had no need of John’s bap!sm. That was for the forgiveness of sins. Jesus had no sins. But he was bap!zed as an example to his fellow countrymen. A modern-day equivalent might be a father who takes his family to confession every Saturday. He might be a very virtuous man who never has any mortal sins to confess. As such, he is not required to go to confession. But he goes anyway. Why? Well, he realizes it’s possible some of his children might be struggling with some moral issues and need to go to confession. So, for their benefit, as an example to them, and so they don’t feel ashamed, he stands in line with them. In doing so, he shows not only great humility, but also great charity. Humility and charity go together. You could say that they are like the two arms of Jesus. As his followers—members of his body—we are called to use these two arms to embrace everyone we meet, so to speak. Embracing people has go$en a bad name in the last few years. There are good reasons for that. Too many people have been hugged, or otherwise touched, against their will in a way that at the least creeps them out, and at the worst violates them. But the spiritual embrace of humility and charity is a good kind of reaching out, touching others’ hearts and minds while respec!ng their personal space. I remember a teacher in high school who showed me humility and charity by helping me learn how to drive. A teacher being along in a car with a student shouldn’t happen nowadays, with good reason, but at the !me there were no rules against it that I knew of. I just appreciated her helping me out. If I remember correctly, though, it only happened one !me. I was driving in Saint Paul, paying more a$en!on to talking than to driving, and I ran a red light. I think she screamed. Thankfully, no cars were coming through the intersec!on from the other direc!on. But that was

the last !me she took me for a driving lesson. I don’t blame her. Another example of humility that I heard about involved a bishop who was scheduled to visit a parish and celebrate Mass there. The !me for Mass to start was ge%ng close and the pastor of the parish was ge%ng nervous. There was no bishop in sight. He finally started walking around the building looking for him. The pastor found the bishop in the church basement, working and cha%ng with some parish volunteers, as together they all stuffed envelopes for a mailing. Another way to be humble and charitable is to keep our mouths shut when we don’t have anything worth saying, or when we do but it’s not the !me to say it. (This is a tough one for me some!mes.) I admire the person who can listen intently and for quite a while—without a hint of impa!ence or boredom—to someone else who knows a lot less than they do about some subject, without jumping in and revealing that they already know what the speaker is saying or know a lot more about the topic. It’s kind of like how God listens so politely to us! May we all follow Jesus’ example of humility and charity with each person we encounter every day, doing what is best for them regardless of whether or not we get anything out of the interac!on. Your fellow pilgrim through the Rosary, Father Rudolph

“We become like that which we gaze upon. Looking into a sunset the face takes on a golden glow. Looking at the Eucharis!c Lord for an hour transforms the heart in a mysterious way.” ~ Archbishop Sheen

You are invited to spend whatever !me you have to offer in the Eucharis!c Adora!on Chapel. It is open every day and night, every hour. If you wish to visit during the hours of 10:00 pm and 5:00 am, please contact Be$y at the above number for the code to enter the outside door.

Sugges!ons for the quiet !me spent in the chapel are:

- Enjoy just being in His presence. - Talk with Him silently about work. - Say one Hail Mary slowly. - Slowly read Scripture un!l something touches your heart. Then listen. - Speak from your heart about your loved ones. Spending !me with Jesus should not be any different, fundamentally, than spending !me with a very close friend. Perhaps the single best thing you can do in a Holy Hour of adora!on is: “Be s!ll and know that I am God”. ~ Psalm 46:10

SAINT OF THE DAY - SAINT RITA OF CASCIA

Rita was born in 1377 in Roccaporena, Italy. She wanted to become a nun, but her parents made her get married. Unfortunately, her husband was both violent and unfaithful to her. She endured much suffering because of him for eighteen years. Then one day he was brought home dead, killed in a fight. Their two sons wanted to get revenge, but died before they could do so. Freed from family !es, in 1413 she could now follow her original inten!on of becoming a nun, at the convent of Santa Maria Maddalena at Cascia. As a nun, Rita excelled both in obedience and in mor!fica!on. She constantly meditated on the passion of Christ for the sake of sinners’ repentance, and she experienced a wound in her forehead, as if made by a crown of thorns, which lasted for a number of years and would not heal. She was also known for her devoted care of sick nuns and the good advice she gave to visitors to the convent. The wound in her forehead healed when she successfully applied for permission to visit Rome for the Jubilee Year of 1450. Rita died of tuberculosis in May 22, 1457. She is patron saint of difficult cases, in par!cular those associated with marriage. Roses are blessed on her feast day in memory of her request for roses and figs on her death-bed, which were found out of season in her old garden. In Cascia there are bees which reappear on and a-er her feast day, and a vine which is said to have survived from her life!me. Saint Rita of Cascia, pray for us!
