DESCRIPTION

5 Tips for UX Success in Agile is a Pecha Kucha style talk. It is 20 slides designed to be presented in 7 minutes. Contents of the slides are the following: 1. Cover slide 2. Tip #1: Be flexible Not yoga flexible, but to be where your business needs you to be. 3. Big Picture: Business stakeholders and product owners may still need UX to be focused on the vision of a product. How it fits into the greater whole. 4. Into the Weeds: Be functioning at the ground level and in the weeds with a dev team. If there is a UX component in the backlog or stories in a sprint, we need to be writing them. 5. Find the Balance Throughout it all, we need to be able to move gracefully back and forth between the big picture and the details of the weeds. 6. Tip #2: Be Transparent Transparent with the UX deliverables, at the task board and in other activities. 7. UX @ the Task Board Because the task board is driven by the development work in given sprint that is measured by points and velocity, we don’t want UX to be ON the board. But we can be next to it. The team should have a good idea of what work is coming from UX. 8. UX ON the Task Board And while we are working toward future sprints, there may be a story in play in the current sprint with a UX component. If so, that story cannot move to “complete” without review from UX. 9. Invite the Team to UX Activities Usability Testing should not be a secret. All team members can be invited to observe. We all watch it together and develop new stories based on what we observe. 10. Tip #3: Redefine "Done" In waterfall, UX is expected to have the entire experience mapped out months in advance with all functionality specified. 11. Good Enough "Deliverables" We need to move away from pixel perfect and to MVP. Do we have to have a frog to launch the Princess? 12. Share The Work UX shouldn’t own the UX deliverables. The entire team can contribute: dev, qa, stakeholders. 13. Everyone Is A Designer For example, wireframes can be made collaboratively. A design jam is a great way to include stakeholders who may feel removed from the process. 14. Share Your Space I used to do all of my “UX” work in the isolation of my cube with my headphones on. Pretty non-collaborative. 15. UX Embeds with the Team Now, I embed with the sprint teams when possible. I sit with the developers, QA, and PM. We are in this together. 16. Embrace the Environment Initially the embedding is hard, but then I realized I have all of this help. I can bounce ideas off from the team immediately and don’t have to wait for feedback. 17. Discover Your Voice UX may be greatly outnumbered on the team, but our input is equally valuable. 18. Learn to Speak Up Whether we are in stand ups, sprint planning, or braining storming with stakeholders, the UX perspective is important. We should not be shy. 19. Learn to Let it Go
