Which is best for your home: A/C or a heat pump?

An A/C system, like your refrigerator, absorbs heat from indoor air, then moves the cool air that is created into ducts to cool your home. Collected heat is exhausted outdoors through the outdoor A/C unit’s refrigerant process. A heat pump can provide home cooling and heat, so you can generally use it all year long. It efficiently collects heat from the outside air to heat your home, and in the summer can be reversed to remove heat from your home for cooling. Today’s heat pumps are very economical to run. If you are using oil or propane heat currently, supplementing that source with a heat pump can save significantly on energy costs, as much as 40%. Modern heat pumps also now feature increased efficiency that allows them to be effective in our northern climate. Ductless heat pumps  deliver super-efficient cooling and heating to homes or rooms without ductwork. A ductless heat

How Arzel Zoning adds comfort and savingsArzel Zoning makes cooling or heating of any area as easy as turning on a light switch. Called forced air zoning, it uses multiple thermostats to control airflow, limiting it in areas where it is not needed, and making adjustments in areas where it is. Instead of adding another A/C unit, Arzel Zoning optimizes your current system in a very energy efficient and convenient way.

When a section of your house gets too hot or cold, a control panel sends two commands: one to automatic dampers to open the duct(s) to that zone and redirect airflow, and the other to your system to supply cooling (or

Summer and winter temperatures challenge your home’s energy systems in different ways. Many homes suffer from uneven cooling (and heating). The Arzel Zoning system is the ideal solution to solve these problems all year long. Eliminate too hot upstairs/too cold downstairs issues in the summer, and enjoy even heating of all rooms in the winter.

The cure for “it’s too hot upstairs and too cold downstairs”– Arzel Zoning

heating). The rooms with dampers that don’t need cooling or heating stay closed. By improving the management of airflow to the zone(s) requiring service, system efficiency is increased at a lower energy cost.

Another bonus: you can opt to cool or heat only the areas of your home you’re currently using. For example, this summer cool your bedrooms at night, then turn them down during the day. Using the Arzel system in this way can deliver up to 30% energy (and utility cost) savings. Along with the summer A/C advantages, you’ll notice fewer drafts in the winter, too.

Your Isaac office can tell you more, take a look at your system, and provide a no-obligation estimate to install Arzel comfort in your home. Incidentally, Arzel Zoning is backed by one of the best warranties in the business, and when installed by Isaac it’s a total win/win.

5 ways to keep every room cool this summer

Adjust duct dampers to balance your system Each duct coming from your furnace has an adjustable valve/damper. Settings for heating and cooling are usually different. By opening up upstairs ducts more and adjusting lower floor ducts, you can more effectively balance cooling. Mark winter and summer settings with a permanent marker to save time this fall.

Consider adding ductless cooling A Mitsubishi ductless solution can be installed in a bedroom or bonus room very cost-effectively to provide cooling exactly where and when you need it.

Arzel Zoning is a great answer It uses multiple thermostats to control air flow, making your whole home comfortable no matter what the season.

Use ceiling fans Reversing your ceiling fan (so it pulls heavier, cooler air up rather than pushing the warmer air down) can provide greater comfort.

Check your attic insulation and ventilation If you don’t have sufficient insulation or proper ventilation in your attic, more heat can be transferred to upstairs rooms. Proper levels will add comfort and save on energy bills throughout the year.

If your upstairs rooms are warmer and downstairs rooms cooler during A/C use, these five ideas can make a big difference to even out your A/C this summer: pump can lower energy costs 25-40% when replacing electric

baseboard heat. These are ideal for combined heating/cooling of your entire home, or a single room or area.

Central air also has its advantages. You’ll have a comfortable, cool home in the summer and it’s very affordable. If you already have an energy efficient furnace and have natural gas heating, A/C is a good choice. Modern A/C units are very compact and fit into tight spaces well. Take advantage of the Isaac Summer of Comfort. You can save on high-efficiency A/C, installed with Isaac quality now. (See back cover).

One of our Isaac experts will be happy to visit with you, examine your home, and help you determine what’s best to meet your home comfort and cooling needs. Give us a call and we’ll cover all the options, costs, and payback time frames with you.

Isaac Home Services continues to grow, delivering the quality you expect from Isaac, now for home projects, too. Here are just a few of the ways we can help you.

Electrical • Get a free electrical inspection – see if your home has correct

amperage, any safety issues, and how to improve energy efficiency

• We have licensed, experienced electricians to install new circuits, bathroom and ceiling fans, outlets and switches, hard-wired smoke/CO detectors, and many other services

Does your home experience uneven heating or cooling? High energy bills? Drafts? Lack of home comfort? Possible safety issues? A free Isaac Home Energy Performance (IHEP) audit will discover why and where these conditions exist and offer smart solutions to remedy them. One of our IHEP inspectors will give your home a complete energy and safety “physical.” Then you’ll receive a comprehensive report with recommendations for improvements to be made.

Each home audit is done by a trained inspector certified by the Building Performance Institute (BPI) and North American Technical Excellence (NATE),” says Domenic DeLeo, Isaac Home Energy Performance Manager. “The report they create is very thorough, and we prioritize each energy improvement so you know what should be done first, how much it will cost, and the return on investment. And along with furnaces, Isaac provides insulation and air sealing services, plumbing, electrical, geothermal heating, glass block windows and other services, so we’re able to complete many home energy improvements quickly, cost-effectively, and skillfully.”

IHEP Makes Saving Easy. And We’ll Complete the Paperwork For You, Too.Isaac is an approved Home Performance with ENERGYSTAR® contractor, so many of the improvements we make are eligible for rebates and incentives from New York State. You may be able to take advantage of additional incentives from the federal government and local utilities. We’ll help you with this part of the process, too, completing and sending all necessary paperwork.

Important Incentives News• Many people are eligible for a New York State program paying 50%

of the cost of qualifying, audit-related energy improvements – here are two examples:

- If you’re a retired couple with an income below $45,504, you qualify

- If you’re a family of four with an income below $66,912, you qualify

Isaac will give you complete information on this program that can save you hundreds to thousands of dollars

• 10% NYSERDA Rebate – on qualifying energy efficient measures, including equipment and insulation.

• Many incentives are slated to end or change in 2016 – 3.49% energy improvement loans may not be available after September, for example

• 2016 is the last year for government solar incentives – we’ll help you see if solar is right for you after your free audit

• RG&E is offering a $25 tune-up rebate – see our coupon page at the back for details

• The federal government has re-launched a rebate program for up to $500 in lifetime energy credits – ask your IHEP representative to see how you can qualify

Isaac expert answers: Should you drain your water heater? If you drain it regularly, once or twice a year, this can help to flush out minerals and debris that may cause your tank-style water heater to malfunction. If you have never drained it, don’t start now! Chances are that a leak or valve issue may occur. Make sure you follow safe guidelines for your gas, electric, or propane water heater.

Who should you call for a new water heater or service? Isaac! If you need service on your current water heater, or need a new one installed, call Isaac. We’re experts on all types, from the newer tankless or on-demand solutions to traditional tank-style water heaters.

We’ll come to your home to take a look before you order a new system from us. In this way, we ensure that a new tank system will fit (they’re wider and taller these days with more insulation built in) and vent properly. We’ll discuss new tankless options that only heat water when you need it and supply endless hot water, even if everyone in the family is taking a shower at once while you run the dishwasher.

Ray Isaac On How Our Vision Creates Value for YouIt starts with them being happy here. This satisfaction is reflected in how they treat our clients, and in what they bring to our communities. I had a client tell me that his daughter’s car had a flat tire on a busy highway. Many people passed her by. An Isaac truck pulled up and our driver was able to get her tire changed and send her on her way. Her father told me that when she saw the Isaac truck, she knew she was safe and everything would be alright.

This ‘enjoyable experience’ needs to be part of everything we do, and we spend hours in group sessions and one-on-ones with each person here on creating and sustaining that critical cultural element. Everyone’s quality of life should be improved because they work for us, with us, or are positively impacted by us," he said.

The bottom line: Isaac employees love what they do and are highly proficient. Happy, fulfilled employees go the extra mile to ensure that you are not just satisfied, but delighted with everything we do.

Isaac’s vision: “To create an enjoyable experience, met with anticipation, that results in an environment where our team, customers, and our community will comfortably grow, prosper, succeed, and improve their quality of life.”

Lofty goals. And powerful words when put into practice. Here’s what Isaac President Ray Isaac says about the company vision:

"To build this workplace where it is enjoyable every day, where our people truly can say they’re very happy to be here, is based on creating a culture that is in sync with our vision.

Some companies talk about putting the customer first. Here, we put safety first, followed by the employee, then the client, and the company. Because unless each employee is delighted, he or she is not going to bring joy to what they do and their interactions with co-workers and clients. We work very hard to create a culture where people are having fun. They’re learning, growing, succeeding. And that relates to each employee’s quality of life.

Isaac Boot Camp is a 12-week program to learn how to be an HVAC technician. Courses are taught by experienced HVAC experts. It provides a comprehensive mix of classroom and in-the-field training. The training is paid, and those enrolled are assured of a job upon graduation. Welcome to the Isaac Boot Camp!

The first group of nine boot camp attendees graduated in early fall and started working at Isaac. They're now armed with extensive knowledge of furnaces, A/C systems, electrical services, gas piping, commercial refrigeration, generators, duct cleaning, sheet metal, and much more.

“As we've grown, we've had demand for talented HVAC techs,” said Eric Knaak, Isaac Vice President and General Manager. “So we created this program as an extension of our Isaac University.” In order to graduate from the Boot Camp and Isaac U, participants must prove their mastery of many subject areas through rigorous tests and demonstrations of hands-on competency.

The value of the program is clear to both graduates and Isaac management. “If you graduate from the Boot Camp successfully, we guarantee you a position,” says Knaak. “And because we’ve trained each person very thoroughly and he or she has passed all the tests, we know every graduate is ready for the real world of HVAC and able to perform with the excellence expected of every Isaac employee. We’re creating good jobs in our community, benefitting individuals, their families, and our organization.”

To date, there have been two Boot Camp semesters with the next scheduled to start in July. If you know of someone who loves to work with their hands and has a mechanical aptitude, have them send an e-mail to [email protected]. They can also learn more at www.isaacheating.com/bootcamp.
