More than 22 years before becoming the wing commander at Schriever Air Force Base, then 2nd Lt. James Ross, drove onto base for the first time to report as a satel-lite operator with the 3rd Space Operations Squadron. So it was like coming home for the colonel when he held his first command-ers call here Sept. 1.

Ross took time during the call to let the members of the 50th Space Wing know a

little about him, his command philosophy, his expectations and goals for the wing.

Like many members of Team Schriever, Ross, a Texas native, enjoys spending time outdoors hiking and fishing as well as watching his favorite football and basket-ball teams.

He stressed that enjoying off-duty time needs to be equally balanced with being efficient at work.

“There needs to be a balance between work and home,” said Ross. “The only way

to achieve that balance is to be efficient and effective while you are at work.”

Ross’s command philosophy suggests that for everyone to achieve a high level of effi-ciency and effectiveness it has to flow from the top down.

“I strongly believe that leaders set the ex-ample and the tone for everything,” com-mented Ross. “I work out early in the morning because I believe fitness is important and

As a veteran flag football player, Rob Weinmann has an-chored the 3rd Space Operations Squadron defense for the past few seasons. But even he can’t remember a 3 SOPS defense that has dominated opponents so convincingly as the current lineup.

With its 13-0 Schriever Intramural Flag Football win against 2 SOPS Sept. 8, 3 SOPS not only kept its unde-feated run intact, it kept its third straight opponent off the scoreboard.

“Defensively, this is the second year we’ve had our main group together,” team captain Alex Mancero said. “I think we were pretty good last year, but this says something when you can shut teams out.”

Dustin Withey recorded four quarterback sacks and forced 2 SOPS’ signal caller Carson Cleveland into several more hurries.

“We don’t dance or juke around,” Withey said. “We’re just real physical and try to get after the quarterback.”

In a lackluster first half, both teams struggled to gain any type of offensive rhythm. Cleveland managed to scramble for a couple of first downs, but had little success through the air. Meanwhile, Mancero threw an interception on 3 SOPS’ first possession and was forced to punt on the team’s next two.

After six possessions and 20 minutes of play, the teams entered halftime deadlocked at zero.

Once again, 3 SOPS counted on its defense to make some-thing happen.

Weinman intercepted a Cleveland pass deep inside 2 SOPS territory and Mancero waisted little time capitalizing on the turnover. On the very next play, he took the snap, rolled to his left and hit Brandan Ward in the back corner of the end zone for the game’s first score.

“Our defense gave us a short field and we made some adjustments to pass routes at halftime so we were able to take advantage,” Mancero said. “I just told Ward to line up in the slot and run to the pylon, he did and I found him in the corner. He has a big catching radius so it worked out pretty well there.”

Cleveland adjusted to the 3 SOPS pass rush following the break, but he didn’t get any help from his receivers. He managed to buy some time by stepping up in the pocket, but watched several long passes slip through his receivers’

fingers and fall harmlessly to the turf.Following another defensive stop, 3 SOPS scored again

when Mancero found Harold Wilson on a deep pass down the middle. Wilson spun out of a tackle and rambled into the end zone to put 3 SOPS up 13-0 with six minutes to play.

From there, 3 SOPS team co-captains inserted Andrew Salazar in as a pass rusher to complement Withey.

“He’s our fastest guy,” Weinmann said. “We noticed the only way they could hurt us was when Cleveland scrambled around so we spied him and then collapsed on him when he tried to run.”

With the victory, 3 SOPS (3-0) maintained a share of

the league lead along with National Reconnaissance Office Operations Squadron.

“It was just our pass rush,” Weinmann said. “Our corners and safeties did a phenomenal job in coverage. Brandon Levesque had to cover their top receivers and he had four or five tackles and four or five knockdowns. They were going at him the entire game and he shut them down.”

The loss dropped 2 SOPS (2-1) into a three-way tie for sec-ond place with three games to play in the regular season.

“Their defense played well and this was just our turn to lose,” 2 SOPS team captain Benjamin Paxson said. “We’re going to learn from this and hopefully it will be our last loss.”

Commentary by Lt. Col. David G. Hanson

23rd Space Operations Squadron commander

Let’s face it, your boss might tell you where to go, how to act and what to say. But truly, you control where you go in life. No one else determines who you want to be or how you choose to live your life but yourself. Others may influence you, but it is you who makes the decisions that shape who you are and what you believe in.

So who do you want to be? What do you want to do in life now while working for the military? What about after military life when you decide to separate, retire or find other employment? What kind of person do you want to be? What are your core values? We all struggle with these questions...but how do we get there? What is your plan? What road map will you follow to get there?

I challenge you to create a personal mission statement. It only takes a short time to create, but will pay dividends throughout your life-time. I participated in Stephen Covey’s course, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, when I was a first lieutenant at Minot Air Force Base. During that course, we were required to create a personal mission statement, which I still maintain today. I set my yearly goals and, al-though I review it each year, most of the words are from the original document I created years

ago. Here is a step-by-step guide to creating your own personal mission statement.

Start with short phrases or statements that are near and dear to you. These are your values or beliefs that make you unique. Some of mine include: Live according to my values. Believe in myself and my abilities and let no person, situation or factor sway me away from these. Leave a legacy, practice what I preach and be a role model and mentor.

The next section includes life goals. Be hon-

est with yourself and continue to dream. A few of my life goals include: Retire from the military, run a marathon (done) and see my children graduate from college.

Follow your life goals with yearly goals. What major events or accomplishments do you want to achieve this year or at least get closer to finishing? Consider mine: Take my family on a vacation, run 200 miles through-out the year and have date night with my wife at least once a month. That last one got away from me for years until I wrote it down.

Finally, write down words to live by. These are your common sayings, words that define your beliefs. They are somewhat similar to the values in Part 1, but make a statement. Refer back to these often and people will know what you believe in. Mine include: Hard work now will pay off later and even through the worst — remain positive.

Take an hour to write down what is impor-tant to you. Dream about what you want to accomplish in life. Determine what you want to get done this year. If you do not plan it or neglect to write it down, chances are you will not make time to do it at all.

You now know a little bit of what is impor-tant to me. It’s time to look inward and chart your own course for the rest of your life. We determine our own destinies; your personal mission statement will help you get there.

Congrats to 50 SW ALS gradsCongratulations to the 50th Space Wing Airman Leadership School graduates:

History QuizWeek of Sept. 15, 2011

Answer to previous question: The 50th Fighter Group activated with the 10th, 11th and 12th Fighter Squadrons assigned. Before the end of 1941, one of these squadrons would leave the group. Which squadron was reassigned and to where did it relocate? The 11th Fighter Squadron was first to move, departing Dec. 19, 1941 to a new assignment in Alaska.

This week’s questions: Friday is Constitution Day. The first 10 amendments to the United States Constitution form the “Bill of Rights.” When were these amendments incorporated into the Constitution through the ratification process?

Schriever Small Business Office

With the country in a state of recession. The Schriever Small Business Office is helping to alleviate some of the stresses associated with this, by reaching out to the community and helping employ small businesses.

“The Schriever Small Business Office is set up to put more emphasis on the small busi-ness program by meeting with businesses throughout the local community, as well as the state of Colorado,” said Paul Aldrich, Schriever Small Business director. “It gives me the ability to guide businesses through the program and help them attain govern-ment contracts.”

The program provides small business owners the opportunity to learn if they are able to qualify for any of the small business categories that are present at Schriever. If there is a need for a business’ services or commodities, the small business office works directly with the 50th Contracting Squadron to help the client obtain a contract. If no current contracts are available, a mentor-

ing program is set up with a company that already has the contract.

Another valuable tool used is capability briefings. This is where a contractor provides information regarding their services directly to potential customers (the civil engineer squadron, security forces squadron, com-munications squadrons, etc.). The small busi-ness office meets with a lot of information and technology contractors. These meetings are twofold. First, it allows Schriever to show we are open to all small businesses in the community. Secondly, it allows customers to see what other services are available, in addition to new innovations offered from outside organizations.

“The small business program is really all about people helping people,” said Aldrich. “If the small business office cannot help a company become competitive, then we are doing all players an injustice.”

In conjunction with meeting with Aldrich, small businesses are able to bring in literature and catalogs to highlight their company.

“Sometimes the visual aspects of a catalog

can help a business reach out to potential clients,” said Aldrich. “I am always willing to display information about a company in or-der to help get word of their business out.”

The small business office reaches out to both the local agencies and agencies from around the country. Goals are set each year to help as many small businesses as possible.

“The information about the program is out there available to everyone,” said Maj. James Atchley, 50th Contracting Squadron commander. “Any company can submit a proposal to the contracting office. Aldrich’s job is to make sure they have all the right tools to be competitive. It’s vital to make sure that their proposals are good so they have a chance of winning a contract. We all know that competition helps breed low prices.”

The small business office is commit-ted to increasing potential opportunities and developing new opportunities for all companies.

“The information I have been receiving from CEOs, presidents, and business devel-

opers of companies in the local area is they feel they have not been afforded opportu-nities to perform work at Schriever,” said Aldrich. “It’s up to us to positively affect the community involvement by being open to all small business in the local community, taking the time to sit down with them and seeing what they have to offer.”

The small business program is an-other avenue to build a rapport with the community.

“By working so closely with our local com-munity, it shows that we want to assist and help guide them down the right path and make their business grow,” said Aldrich. “It really benefits everyone involved.”

If you are interested in learning more about small business programs and opportunities at Schriever, please contact the small business office to set up a meeting and/or drop off your company’s information regarding your business. The Schriever AFB Small Business Director is available for meetings and train-ing. To make an appointment please contact Paul Aldrich at 567-3805.

“We are a member of the military 24 hours

a day,” said Ross. “You should live by the core values at all times, not just while you are at work. That’s what makes us different than those who don’t wear the uniform. Our willingness to live by these core values at all times.”

Along with living by the core values, Ross also expects all members of Team Schriever to take care of one another and create and promote an environment of respect and dignity.

The future for Team Schriever is bright according to Ross and his initial priorities

for the wing include continuing 100 percent mission success, developing our people, com-pleting the military satellite communications integrated operations environment, building the Schriever community and enhancing quality of life here, and enhancing the rela-tionship with the community and mission partners.

As Ross wrapped up his first command-er’s call he invited Chief Master Sgt. Randy LaCombe, 50th Space Wing command chief, to the stage for the last time as the command chief. LaCombe will be retiring in the com-

ing months.“On one hand, I’m sad, this is my last com-

mander’s call, and on the other hand I’m happy, this is my last commander’s call,” said LaCombe. “I have enjoyed every minute of serving with the men and women of the 50th Space Wing.”

Before ending, representatives from squad-rons throughout the base spoke to the wing about upcoming projects and activities, to include the upcoming fiscal year closeout ac-tivities as well as the 2011 Combined Federal Campaign.

WASHINGTON (AFNS) — Policy changes concerning the use of the Air Force’s new Controlled Spend Account cards were spelled out in a letter from Headquarters Air Force, Aug. 26.

Effective immediately, personal use of the CSA is not authorized.

The CSA is a program the Air Force implemented this year to replace the Government Travel Card. Initially, per-sonal use of the new CSA card was allowed if there was a residual balance remaining on the card after the travel voucher was filed.

“The card can no longer be used for personal use,” said 2nd Lt. David Merrill, 50th Comptroller Squadron financial services officer. “Travelers returning from their trip will need to know that the option to use the card as a “gift card” is no longer available.”

As of now, the CSA card may only be used for expenses related to official government travel. After an individual has filed a travel voucher (within five days after their official

travel, per Joint Federal Travel Regulation, Appendix O) or during inprocessing following a permanent change of station, any balance remaining on the card can be obtained by the traveler through one of the following options:

• Electronic transfer to a personal account through Citi’s

on-line access system or by calling them directly• Withdraw the balance via an ATM (there is a 2 percent

fee)• Request a check by mail by calling Citi• A check will be automatically mailed to the cardholder

after 60 days of account inactivity“Total trip reimbursement is mandatory,” said Merrill.

“The travel voucher will be rejected if 100 percent of the residual funds aren’t transferred to Citibank first.”

Funds can then be retrieved (after the final travel voucher is filed) via electronic funds transfer, check, or cash through an ATM.

“The CSA card is still under review,” said Merrill. “In the very near future, the traveler will no longer have the option to choose total-trip reimbursement. It will happen automatically.”

Any Team Schriever member with questions or problems concerning this change please contact Senior Airman Justin Lozada at 567-6416 or Merrill at 567-5113.

For Senior Airman Cody Ott, 50th Civil Engineering Squadron, the sport of run-ning was something he never really thought about growing up.

He had to join the Air Force to figure out he liked it.

“In the midst of basic training, I noticed people were faster than me,” he said. “And that irked me. So I started running and then I figured out when you put the miles in, you begin to realize results pretty quickly.”

He now runs three to four full-length marathons a year, so when he heard ath-letes here were gearing up for the Air Force Marathon, the event seemed like the perfect fit for his training schedule. Air Force run-ners who compete are provided permissive temporary duty for the race.

This year, he’ll participate in the Air Force Marathon for the first time, rather fitting for an Airman who can thank the Air Force for igniting his new-found passion for running. He will be one of 21 athletes to represent Schriever Air Force Base in the 15th Air Force Marathon Saturday at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio.

The Wright-Patterson course will be a flat and fast track, something appealing to most runners at Schriever, who by the nature of their duty station are accustomed to run-ning at more than 6,000 feet.

“Everybody has told me to enjoy this one,” he said. “After training at altitude, it’s going to be fun to run at sea level.

According to the AF marathon website, a record number of runners have registered for the event. Schriever will be represented by more than 20 runners for the second consecutive year despite the fact that their transportation to Wright-Patterson hit a snafu recently. A planned flight from Peterson AFB was unexpectedly cancelled on short notice, forcing the runners to make

alternate arrangements.“Right now, we’re planning to drive shuttle

vans out and then fly back, but that plan has not been finalized just yet,” Ott said. “We’ll figure it out by the time its ready to go.”

As in past years, race organizers allow participants to register for the event they feel will present the best individual challenge. Runners can choose to enter the 26.2 mile marathon, the 13.1 mile half marathon or a 10 kilometer event.

Every competitor has their own motiva-tions and goals. At Schriever, those goals are wide and varied.

Senior Airman Justin Lozada, 50th Comptroller Squadron, will run the half marathon, his first long-distance competition.

“I’m doing it for the challenge,” Lozada said. “Running for me, grew out of trying to pass my PT test. My buddy, Airman 1st Class Allen Orozco-Castaneda, has run it a couple of times and suggested I try it. He didn’t have to twist my arm too much. I’m looking forward to pushing myself, meet-ing a lot of new people and being a part of something big.”

First Lt. Megan Rube, 1st Space Operations

Squadron, will be attempting her fourth full-length marathon and is hoping to set a personal-best time. For Capt. Sarah Doud, 50th Operations Group, the half marathon will serve as a test for her recently repaired knee.

“I’ve never run anything more than six miles, so this will probably be a walk/run race,” she said. “It’s only been three and half months since my knee surgery so finish-ing is my goal. The funny thing is I hated running before this surgery, but once your mobility is taken away, you’re happy to get out there and run once you can.”

Fitness

TipHow much cardiovascular exercise do I need? The American College of Sports Medicine recommends a

minimum of 30 minutes a day, 3 days a week for heart health. The 30 minutes is cumulative, so you can do 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes in the evening and still receive the same cardiovascular benefits. Unfortunately, this doesn’t apply to “fat-burning” exercise. If you want to get rid of the fat, you have to work out for a minimum of 20 consecutive minutes before you enter the “fat-burning” energy zone. This is the energy zone when stored energy (aka fat) begins to be broken down and utilized. The proper duration and frequency of “fat-burning” exercise is subjective and should be discussed with your physician.

Learn your survivor benefitsRetiring? Hard to believe, isn’t it? After all

these years you and your family are about to leave active duty to enjoy a well-earned life in the civilian world. Right now your mind is filled with thoughts of the many things you must do to prepare for this ma-jor change. The move to and setting up of a new home; new neighbors and schools; a new job — all these things demand time and attention. But before they get you too wrapped up, there’s one decision you must make that will last for the rest of your life and beyond. Prior to retiring, you will have a chance to enroll in the Survivor Benefit Plan. For more information, please contact Kevin Mitchell at 567-4037.

Mom’s-to-be get close parkingAny woman who is in her third trimester

of pregnancy is entitled to park in designated parking spaces at Schriever AFB (located outside of Bldgs. 210, 200 and 120) if she has a voucher to display on the dashboard of her car. She may receive a voucher by bringing a note from her doctor verifying that she is in her third trimester to the Schriever Airman and Family Readiness Center. For more in-formation, please contact Heidi Tintle at 567-3920.

Need a listening ear?The Military and Family Life Consultant

The MFLC is available every day, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Airman and Family Readiness Center, Bldg. T-65. Walk ins are available or you can schedule a time by calling the MFLC directly at 651-3379.

Attend the pre-separation counseling briefing

The pre-separation counseling briefing is the first step to separating or retiring from the military. This briefing is mandatory and a pre-requisite to all other transition-related brief-ings such as Transition Assistance Program. During this briefing you will learn about all the benefits and services available to you when you leave the military. Documentation of this briefing is accomplished through the completion of the DD Form 2648. If you are a year from separation or two years from retirement, start the transition process now. The class is every Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Airman and Family Readiness Center, Bldg. T-65. For more information, please contact Heidi Tintle at 567-3920.

Apply online for AFAIndividuals interested in applying for Air

Force Aid emergency assistance, to include Falcon loans, should apply online now at https://my.afas.org/memberportal/Login/Login.aspx. After completing the applica-tion call the Airman and Family Readiness Center at 567-3920 to make an appointment. Also a copy of the current LES is needed to complete the process.

Review records for VA claimsIf you are 180 days from separation or

retirement, now is the time to start your disability claim with the Department of Veterans Affairs. The initial medical records review will be provided by the Disabled American Veterans. If you are leaving the military and have service related medical is-sues, it would be in your best interest to start the process for a disability claim. Depending on the extent of your disability, you may be eligible for monthly monetary compensa-tion, veteran’s preference into federal service and many other benefits depending on the state you decide to settle in. The records reviews are by appointment only, so call early. You must have a copy of your medi-cal records for this appointment. The one hour-long briefing begins at 8 a.m. at the Airman and Family Readiness Center, Bldg. T-65. For more information, please contact Heidi Tintle at 567-3920.
