Sometimes you just need a good jazzmusic event to recharge your batteries.

The 2000 or so people attending the30th Annual Thanksgiving Dixieland JazzFestival have done that in spades. Basedon comments from those attending, thesomewhat smaller Festival did not takeanything away from the top quality musicor excellence of bands and musiciansthat has become the standard of the SanDiego Dixieland Jazz Festival. Oneindividual from Texas expressed it thisway, “You may have had a fewer numberof venues this year, but the decisions onwhich one to attend at any given timewere still just as hard to make.”

Top quality bands and musicians isthe trademark of this yearly Festival andthe 30th Annual event was true to formwith a fantastic lineup — from DaveBennett and his Quartet, to Tim Laughlin,Connie Jones and New Orleans All Stars,Sue Palmer and Motel Swing, AnitaThomas, Yerba Buena Stompers, GrandDominion, Night Blooming Jazzmen,Chloe Feoranzo, Carl Sonny Leyland,Katie Cavera, Cash Kings, Hayriders,Titanic JB, High Society JB, Mission BayHS Dixie, Heliotrope Ragtime Orchestra,Uptown Lowdown JB, Dixie Express andDick Williams’ Jazzsea Jams.

A number of Special Eventspunctuated the Festival with excitement— an explosive tribute to Jerry Lee Lewisand superb Benny Goodman sets byDave Bennett, a Lester Young Centennialtribute led by Anita Thomas and HalSmith provided insight into thispacesetter’s music, three clarinets ofAnita, Chloe and Dave Bennett sparkledfor the audience, John Gill with awonderful Bing Crosby tribute, and 2 toGroove swing dance group showed itsshag, shim-sham and lindy hop prowess.

If you were there, you experienced allthe above. If you were not able to attendthe 30th Annual Festival, you will behappy to learn that a number of thehighlighting bands and musicians willbe returning next year as described inanother article in this edition of the JazzRambler. We are hoping that 2010 is abetter financial year for all and thatattendance will be on the up-swing. Doa friend or family member who may nothave ever attended our Jazz Festival afavor by bringing them along next year!

Many thanks are due to many peoplefor the success of this year’s Festival –

leading off the list are our wonderfulband and musician sponsors and the in-kind Festival sponsors – two groupswithout which this Festival would notbe possible. The over 100 individualswho donated to our annual appeal, ourspecial 30-year Banner donors, andYouth & Education Program donors allcontributed to making the Festival asuccess and helped enable the AFCDJSto continue its work to preserve andpromote traditional Jazz. Kudos to thevendors and exhibitors who help defraysome of the expense of putting on thisFestival for which we are very grateful. Finally, the Festival volunteers wholubricate the machinery of the Festivalas cab managers, and at badge sales, information and membership desk, venue help, musician lounge, instrumentstorage and volunteer roomcoordinators – all greatly appreciatedand most essential to our success.

Mark your calendar for 2010,November 24-28, Wednesday thruSunday of Thanksgiving week at theTown & Country Resort, for anothertrad jazz experience. See you then!

The band played every Friday andSaturday at the Pizza Palace inHuntington Beach. Fortunately, theband was recorded live on a numberof occasions. The late Ron Going’stapes from Mar. 16, 1968 were releasedon Merry Makers CD-4. A compi-lation of live recordings from the PizzaPalace made by pianist Dick Shooshanare scheduled for release at a futuredate. The band also recorded an LP(“Here Comes the Hot Tamale Man”)for the Vaul t l abe l in 1969 .Unfortunately, as of this writing, thatrecord has not been reissued on CD.

While in Southern California, Rayalso worked with the SalutationTuxedo Band, which included FrankDemond, Jim Bogen, Shooshan, MikeFay and Walter Sereth (on drums). After leaving the South Frisco JazzBand, Ray played with the CrescentBay Jazz Band and f requent lyappeared at Sunday-afternoon jamsessions hosted by various jazz clubs.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Ray’sunique sound was heard infrequently. He surfaced again in the early ’90s,playing sessions with Gremoli andplayed a single, though very memorable, date with the New Orleans Wanderersat the Fullerton Hofbrau in 1995. On thatoccasion, Ray’s majestic New Orleans-style cornet thrilled the musicians aswell as the fans.

He is not playing at the present time, but his composition “Salty Bubble” isheard on the soundtrack of WoodyAllen’s recent film “Whatever Works”(played by Tom Sharpsteen’s Orlandos, with Clint Baker on drums). Thesupremely talented cornetist MarcCaparone and longtime musicalassociate Mike Fay stay in contact with“Papa Ray” and report that he may becomposing more music for future Allenfilms! And though Marc has adistinctive individual style on cornet,he can also play Ray’s style toperfection.

Papa Ray Ronnei is one of the mostcreative and exciting of all traditionaljazz stylists. Buy one of his recordingsand prepare to be inspired by Ray’sinterpretations of Keppard, Carey andBrunies, filtered through his uniquemusical sensibilities!

The author heard Papa Ray Ronneimany times with the South Frisco JazzBand in the late 1960s. He has neverrecovered from the experience.

(This is the 75th in a series ofbiographies of great traditional jazzmusicians.)

By Hal SmithAFCDJS President

Ray Ronnei was born inMinneapolis on Nov. 7, 1916 — ascorne t i s t F reddie Keppard wasenroute to Salt Lake City to resumetouring with the Original Creole Band.He was five years old when Papa MuttCarey played cornet with Spikes’Seven Pods of Pepper on the firstissued recording by an African-American Jazz Band. He was sevenwhen cornetist Abbie Brunies madehis first records with the HalfwayHouse Jazz Band in New Orleans. And93 years after his birth, Ray Ronnei’sinterpretation of Keppard’s, Carey’sand Brunies’ styles, combined withhis own unique musical ideas, hasmade him a living legend.

A few years after graduating fromhigh school, Ray Ronnei took cornetlessons from Louis Maggio. DuringWorld War II he served in the CoastGuard and after the war he studiedwith Papa Mutt Carey, then with KidOry’s Creole Jazz Band. Ray playedaround Southern California in the late’40s and jazz writer Floyd Levinrecorded him with Ory’s pianist BusterWilson in 1949. Several of those trackswere issued in 1996 on American MusicCD-89. The Mutt Carey influence isunmistakable on the selections whereRay is heard.

His next recording was a liveperformance in Los Angeles with thePepper Jazz Band, taped by PaulAffeldt in 1957 and issued on EpitaphRecords No. 1 Live recordings withthe Jazz Missionaries and (the original)Red Pepper Jazz Band, from the early

’60s, were released on Epitaph 2 and3, respectively. A 1962 live recordingby Jerry Kaehle’s South Bay Jazz Bandwas issued on LP and cassette, andrecently released on CD by MerryMakers. Although the Mutt Careyinfluence is still apparent on theserecordings, there are also elements ofKeppard and Brunies in Ray’s playing.

In 1963, Ray joined the El DoradoJazz Band in Los Angeles. This groupwas a spinoff of a band led bytrombonist James Leigh in the BayArea from the mid-’50s until the early’60s. The Los Angeles El Doradoband was led by banjoist Dan Ruedger(who was the banjoist in the NorthernCalifornia group). In addition to Rayand Dan, the personnel included AlCrowne, trombone; Walter Sereth, clarinet (later, Mike Baird); Mike Fay,bass; Pete Kier, helicon; and BobRaggio, washboard. The band playedat many venues in Southern Californiaincluding Ted’s Grill, Leaping Liz’s,the Can-Can, the Golden WestHofbrau, Mr. Fat Fingers and atmeetings of the New Orleans Jazz Club

of California. Paul Affeldt recordedthe band on a number of occasionsand issued the results on Epitaph-3and Item-1. He also organized anactual recording date for the band(though in a makeshift studio) in SantaMonica in 1964. This session, issuedon Epitaph-4, features blazing hotcornet by Ray on “My Bucket’s Got aHole in It” and his characteristic vocalson “Early Hours,” “Snag It” and“Someday, Sweetheart.”

The band was popula r wi thtraditional jazz fans in the mid-1960sbut ultimately it disbanded, the finalengagement played on July 23, 1966 atGuys & Dolls in Sepulveda, CA. Theband a t tha t t ime was led bywashboard is t Bob Raggio andinc luded Ray; Frank Demond, trombone; Tom Sharpsteen, clarinet;Vic Loring, banjo; and Mike Fay, bass.Once again, Paul Affeldt recorded theperformance and a selection of thematerial was issued on Epitaph-5.

Following the breakup of the ElDorado band, Ray wound up in theBay Area, where he worked frequentlywith Ted Shafer’s Jelly Roll Jazz Band. The JRJB played a steady engagementat the Straw Hat Pizza Parlor in Oaklandand many of those nights wererecorded by the late Ed Sprankle. Severaltracks from 1967 show Ray at his best, playing alongside trombonist BobMielke, clarinetist Bob Helm, bassist JimCumming and banjoist-leader Shafer. Inparticular, “Maple Leaf Rag,” “TigerRag,” “Mamie Desdoume’s Blues” and“Big Chief Battle Axe” are classics oftraditional jazz.

In 1968 Ray returned to SouthernCalifornia, where he joined VinceSaunders’ South Frisco Jazz Band.
