The 5,000 Poppies Project was dreamt up by two Australian artists, Lynn Berry and Margaret Knight, who began by crocheting 160 poppies to commemorate their fathers who fought in World War II.It is now an International Phenomenon with installations all over the world.
The Fun Palace have launched their own 5000 Poppies project demonstrating how a creative
endeavour can bring people together, there has been an
Incredible response from the creative community in Medway!
Over 20,000 poppies have been created by over 1,000 members of
the community!IN FLANDERS FIELDSIn Flanders fields the poppies growBetween the crosses, row on row,That mark our place; and in the skyThe larks, still bravely singing, flyScarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days agoWe lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,Loved and were loved, and now we lieIn Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:To you from failing hands we throwThe torch; be yours to hold it high.If ye break faith with us who dieWe shall not sleep, though poppies growIn Flanders fields.
Written during the First World War by John McCrae, 1915
Did you know that there are different coloured poppies for specific causes related to war?• The original White Poppy made
just after the first world war by the widows and women’s co-operative guild, was the original PEACE symbol.
• We sometimes forget that Animals were used to help us in the War, especially the First World War, homing pigeons, Horses and Dogs. The Purple Poppy is a way of remembering them.
31 Oct-7 Jan
The remembrance poppy was inspired by the World War I poem "In Flanders Fields". Its opening lines refer to the many poppies
that were the first flowers to grow in the churned-up earth
of soldiers' graves in Flanders, a region of Europe that overlies a
part of Belgium.
