Introduction to home theaterYou are probably used to u sing stereo equipm ent to l isten to m usic, but m ay not be used to h om e
theater systems t hat give you m any more options (such as surroun d sound) wh en listening to
soundtracks.
Hom e theater refers to the use of mu ltiple audio tracks to create a surroun d sound effect, m aking
you feel l ike you're in th e m iddle of the action or c oncert. The surround sound you get from a hom e
theater system depends not on ly on th e speakers you have set up in your room , but also on the
sourc e and the soun d setting s of the receiver.
DVD-Video has becom e the basic sour ce m aterial for hom e theater due to its size, qualit y, and ease
of use. Depending on the DVD, you can have up to seven different aud io tracks com ing from one
disc, all of them being sent t o different speakers in your system. This is wh at creates a surroun d
sound effect and gives you th e feeling of b eing th ere.
This receiver will au tom atically decode D olby Digital, D TS, or Dolby Surrou nd DVD-Video discs,
accord ing t o your speaker setup. In m ost cases, you wont h ave to m ake changes for realistic
surround sound, but other possibil it ies (l ike l istening to a CD with m ulti-channel surround soun d)
are explained in Playing sources, starting on page 24.

you h ook up u sing an optical cable, you should refer to Opt ica l d ig i ta l inpu t set t in gon page 32 to
assign th e optical input to D VD.
Use a video cord to conn ect the video output on your D VD to the receiver using the jacks shownbelow.
2 Hook up your TV.
Use a video cord t o conn ect your receiver to th e TV usin g th e jacks as shown b elow.

Connecting digital com ponentsFor proper decoding of Dolby Digital/DTS soundtracks, you need to make digital audio connections.
You can do th is by either c oaxial or optical con nection s (you don t need to do b oth). The qu ality of
these two types of conn ections is the sam e, but since som e digital com ponents only have one type
of digital terminal, it is a matter of m atching like with l ike (for exam ple, the coaxial output from the
com ponent to the coaxial inpu t on th e receiver). This receiver has both a coaxial and an op tical
input for a total of two digital inpu ts. Connect your digital com ponents as shown below.
Wh en connecting your equipm ent, always m ake sure the power is turned off and the power cord is

Hints on speaker placementSpeakers are usually designed with a particular placem ent in m ind. Some are designed to be
floorstanding , while others should be placed on stands to soun d th eir best. Som e should be placed
near a wall; others shoul d be placed away from w alls. We have provided a few tips on g etting t hebest sound from your speakers (below), but you should also follow th e guidelines on placem ent that
the speaker m anufacturer provided with your particular speakers to get the m ost out of them .
To ach ieve the b est possible sur roun d
sound , install your speakers as show n
below. Be sure all sp eakers are in stalled
securely to prevent accidents and improve
sound quality.
Place the front left and rig ht speakers at
equal distan ces from the TV.
Wh en placin g speakers near the TV, we
recom m end using m agnetically shielded
speakers to prevent possible in terferenc e,
such as discoloration of the picture wh en
the TV is switc hed on. If you do n ot have
m agnetically shielded speakers and n otice
discolor ation of th e TV pict ure, m ove the
speakers farther away from the TV.
Place the cen ter speaker above or below th e
TV so that th e sound of th e center chan nel is
loc alized at th e TV screen.
If you ch oose to install th e center speakeron top of the TV, be sure to secur e it with
put ty, or by other suit able m eans, to
reduce the risk of damage or injur y
resulting from the speaker fall ing from
the TV in the event of external shoc ks
such as earthquakes.
If possible, place the surr oun d speakers
slightly above ear level.
Try not t o place the sur roun d speakers
further away from th e listening position than
the front and center speakers. Doing so c an
weaken th e surround soun d effect.
Overhead view of speaker set up
3-D view of speaker set up
M ake sure th at all the bare speaker wir e is twisted together and inserted ful ly into th e speaker
term inal. If any of the bare speaker wire tou ch es the rear panel it m ay cause the pow er to cut off as
a safety m easure. Use good qu ality speaker wire to conn ect th e speakers to th e receiver.
