WHAT IS 4-H PROJECT COMPLETION?

After going over 166 record books and having many questions about how you get your completion disc,

I feel that there is some misunderstanding about this. There are three things that must be done in order

to get your completion disc.

• First, you have to complete your project form.

• Second, you must “exhibit” which means you must show that project to the public. The public

does not consist of family members. “Showing” may be an actual competitive show, as for the

animals, or an indoor fair entry. It could be an art show, photography show, cookie competition

or any public display of your project.

• Third, you must do a speech or demonstration IN THAT PROJECT AREA. The speech or demo

needs to be an educational type about your project. In essence, you need to inform the public,

(again, not just family members), about what you have learned within that project area. Just

talking to people at the fair does not count. Just having a stall display does not count. A speech

or demo to your club, school or other public audience is the correct venue.

A critical part is that you enter this information in your project record. There is a section in the animal

records titled “Project Communications”. It asks for the date, type of communication (speech, demo,

etc.), title and the location. “Title” is key here. If you just put “speech” the judges don’t know that it

was in the project area. You need to state what is was: “Parts of the Saddle”, “How to Fit Show Cattle”,

etc. In the “Generic” non-animal project form the section is labeled as “Project Journal/Log”. It asks

for date, communications topic or title, location and rating. Don’t put “speech” or “demonstration”.

Again, you must relay the TOPIC or TITLE of the speech or demo so the judges know it is about your

project area. This information is also in your Summary Record, but you MUST put it in your project

record too.

If you have questions, I will be glad to answer them.

project? Well 4-H Livestock Judging is just the ticket for you then!

Whether you have just started pursuing an animal project or have

shown livestock for years, there is always more to learn about the

livestock industry. Livestock Judging teaches youth how to properly

evaluate livestock based on physical conformation, production ability

and breed character.

If you are interested in learning more about livestock judging than contact one of the coaches: Ethan

Whiteside, 410-829-1886. Taylor Bramble, 410-829-0791. Email: [email protected] POTATO PROJECT

pounds of seed potatoes, please let Miss Sally know. All you have to do is plant, care for and harvest

your potatoes. Then you bring them to the Extension office where we will weigh them and bag them

into 5 pound bags. You may enter them in the fair too. During the fair, you will be expected to sell your

potatoes, at a price that we choose. They will be in the main hall and you may take them around and

find customers. Half of the money will go to you with the other half being donated to the 4-H Park. We

will be purchasing the seed potatoes on April 15th so we need to know how many you want before the
