What do you do at Brunel?Currently I am working within theInternational Pathways andLanguage Centre (IPLC).Generally, my role is to market andpromote our Intensive Foundationand Pre-Masters Engineering andEnglish Language courses toInternational students.How long have you worked here(and where did you workbefore)?Well I actually graduated fromBrunel quite a few years ago andthen worked in the Home EUAdmissions team as anAdmissionsTeam Leader for about 8 years. Ijoined Brunel International inNovember 2009.What do you like about yourjob?I enjoy all aspects of my role,including the international travelopportunities to promote ourcourses and meet potentialstudents. Helping students choosethe right course and career pathsmakes the job really worthwhile.What do you like best aboutliving near London?
I live very local to Brunel andenjoy the fact that I can easilyjump on a train and reach centralLondon quickly. You can eat ingreat restaurants, visit famoustourist attractions and shop insome of the best shops! We alsohave some amazing parks inLondon.Which is your favouriteband/singer?Anything with a good beat and feelgood factor always gets myattention!What is your favourite food?I recently travelled to Thailand andloved all their food! It was veryHOT and I would definitely goback for more!What is your favouritedestination and why?I was lucky enough to travel to SriLanka a few months ago andtremendously enjoyed the uniqueblend of cultures there. I also havea passion for great architecture soThailand is a favourite with itsamazing Temples and Buddhamonuments.

London is a great place to be in thespring and summer.The weather isgetting warmer, the days longer, thespring flowers are blooming andeveryone treats it as the perfect excuseto make the most of the capital.

Mid March saw the annual StPatrick’s day festival, with itsparade, music, dancing, food anddrink, celebrating everything Irisharound London and on the mainstage in Trafalgar Square.Moving to April, thousands of
people lined the banks of theThames to watch CambridgeUniversity win this year’s boatrace, and on the warmer days
London’s picturesque parkshave been full of peopleenjoying the sun.Amongst many other
things, April also sawAlternative Fashion Week,showcasing the world’sbest young designers, andthe Virgin London Marathon,which passes many of the city’s
most famous landmarks.In May there was the
Chelsea Flower Show (oneof the UK’s major societyevents) and let’s not forgetone of the highlights of theEnglish football calendar,the FACup Final atWembley.Then we have the
summer stretching aheadof us, with Wimbledon,county cricket and TestMatches, boat trips, theBritish seaside, picnics,festivals - and some ofthe most beautifulsummer countrysidein the world !

A fantastic new pool and leisurecomplex has opened a few minutes’walk from the Brunel campus.Costing £31m it features a 50 metreOlympic standard pool, an outdoor‘lido’ style pool,cafes and fitnessfacilities.London Mayor andhonorary Brunel graduate,BorisJohnson, formally opened thecomplex and our swimming clubs,sports scholars and recreationalswimmers are making full use of itat special student rates.
Every year we hold One World Week oncampus and this year it was bigger andbetter than ever.
In fact you never quite knew what would be aroundthe next corner: Chinese acrobats; cookingdemonstrations; parades; concerts; exhibitions – somuch to see and do!Competitions and sports tournaments not only
brought students and staff together but also helpedraise money for a very worthwhile cause: the HaitiEarthquakeAppeal.Speaking of competitions, Brunel International
won the contest for best internationally themedoffice again this year. We chose ‘films from aroundthe world’ as our subject (see photo). The BusinessSchool joined us in first place.

The UK alumni ball isorganised by the BritishCouncil and this yearover 300 alumni fromthe various Universitiesattended.
The University is namedafter one of the greatestBritish engineers in history:Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
Born in 1806, he designed tunnels,bridges, railway lines, buildings,docks and ships. His enormousbody of work included the GreatWestern Railway, which linkedBristol to London; the CliftonSuspension Bridge (did you knowour older halls of residence are allnamed after one of Brunel’sbridges?) and the first steamship toprovide a regular transatlanticservice, the ‘Great Western’. Back in2002 Brunel was voted second outof the 100 greatest Britons by thepeople of the UK and we are proudto continue his legacy of innovationand entrepreneurial spirit.

New metallurgy centre opensHow do you make the manufacture of metals cleaner, more sustainable and more energyefficient? Our new £9m research centre, funded by the Engineering & Physical SciencesResearch Council and 15 industry partners, will be providing the answers, through a stateof the art programme led by Professor Zhongyun Fan. If liquid metal engineering is yourfield of interest or expertise, seewww.brunel.ac.uk/about/acad/bcast for study andresearch opportunities.
Mauritian alumnilaunch new groupBrunel’s Mauritian alumni association hasmet for the first time at an inaugural dinnerin Mauritius in February.
The event was co-hosted by Professor Chris Jenks (ourVice-Chancellor and Principal) and Philip Ah-Chuen,who studied at the University in 1973. As Head of AlliedMotors, he is one of the island’s best knownentrepreneurs. Deputy PM and Finance Minister, DrRama Sithenen, who graduated with a PhD from Brunelin 2008, was the guest of honour, joining 20 otherMauritian alumni for a relaxed and enjoyable evening.The University has a growing partnership with the
island. Currently 35 Mauritians, including one of ourinternational scholarship winners, are studying oncampus. Following this year’s OVEC recruitment fair wehope to be welcoming many more in the months ahead!
Brunel English Language TestTo gain a UK student Visa you need to meet the English language requirements for youroffer. If you are living in or visiting the UK then you could attend the BrunELT. This is ourown English language test, which is held at Brunel every Friday over the summer. Studentswho pass the test at the required level can then progress to degree courses at BrunelUniversity. The 4-hour test costs £95 and can be booked online. See:www.brunel.ac.uk/international/englishcourses/englishtest for details.
Members of the international team have beentravelling the world to attend recruitment fairs, givepresentations and advise people thinking of studyingat Brunel. Eastern GatewayWork has begun on our amazing new, £30m ecobuilding. It will house the main Brunel reception, theBrunel Business School and a 600 seat auditorium, aswell as a gallery andcafé. Sports and FitnessComplexUsain Bolt trained at Brunel insummer 2009 in our new £14msports & fitness centre. But wearen’t just interested in worldclass athletes. Students of allabilities, from beginners to topathletes, are made very welcomeand can join one of over 40 sportsclubs or use the gym. There arelots of teams you can jointhrough the Students Union or why not start yourown? Our newest sports club, established with a £9000grant from Sport England, is our very own AmericanFootball team – the Brunel Burners!
The Hub + LocosThese bars are really popularmeeting places for Brunelstudents. You can get a drinkor snack, play pool or darts,watch Premier Leaguefootball on the big screen orjust relax on the Hub balcony,from where you can watchthe world go by, and enjoy abarbeque in good weather.
Halls ofResidenceThere are 34 self-cateringhalls of residence oncampus. 90% have ensuitebathrooms and there area limited number ofstudio flats available forcouples. The rent includeselectricity, gas and water,as well as weekly cleaningand free internet access inall rooms. Allinternational first yearstudents are guaranteed aplace, provided they applyby 1 September in theyear their course starts.
The MeetingHouseChristian, Hindu andMuslim chaplains arebased at the MeetingHouse and studentreligious groups use it forworship, prayer meetingsand quiet reflection. Thechaplains aim to providespiritual and pastoralhelp for everyone at theUniversity, regardless offaith, and at least one ofthem is available oncampus from Mondayto Friday.

London is a great place to be in thespring and summer.The weather isgetting warmer, the days longer, thespring flowers are blooming andeveryone treats it as the perfect excuseto make the most of the capital.

Mid March saw the annual StPatrick’s day festival, with itsparade, music, dancing, food anddrink, celebrating everything Irisharound London and on the mainstage in Trafalgar Square.Moving to April, thousands of
people lined the banks of theThames to watch CambridgeUniversity win this year’s boatrace, and on the warmer days
London’s picturesque parkshave been full of peopleenjoying the sun.Amongst many other
things, April also sawAlternative Fashion Week,showcasing the world’sbest young designers, andthe Virgin London Marathon,which passes many of the city’s
most famous landmarks.In May there was the
Chelsea Flower Show (oneof the UK’s major societyevents) and let’s not forgetone of the highlights of theEnglish football calendar,the FACup Final atWembley.Then we have the
summer stretching aheadof us, with Wimbledon,county cricket and TestMatches, boat trips, theBritish seaside, picnics,festivals - and some ofthe most beautifulsummer countrysidein the world !

A fantastic new pool and leisurecomplex has opened a few minutes’walk from the Brunel campus.Costing £31m it features a 50 metreOlympic standard pool, an outdoor‘lido’ style pool,cafes and fitnessfacilities.London Mayor andhonorary Brunel graduate,BorisJohnson, formally opened thecomplex and our swimming clubs,sports scholars and recreationalswimmers are making full use of itat special student rates.
Every year we hold One World Week oncampus and this year it was bigger andbetter than ever.
In fact you never quite knew what would be aroundthe next corner: Chinese acrobats; cookingdemonstrations; parades; concerts; exhibitions – somuch to see and do!Competitions and sports tournaments not only
brought students and staff together but also helpedraise money for a very worthwhile cause: the HaitiEarthquakeAppeal.Speaking of competitions, Brunel International
won the contest for best internationally themedoffice again this year. We chose ‘films from aroundthe world’ as our subject (see photo). The BusinessSchool joined us in first place.

What do emotions,molluscs,double-glazing and plastichave in common?They were all subjects of the winningentries in the competition held as part of a two-dayresearch poster conference hosted by the GraduateSchool.The Vice-Chancellor,Professor Chris Jenks,awarded five winners £500 each.
Prominent Brunel alumni includedProfessor Qiu Song (MA inDesign Strategy & Innovation).The professor was Chief Designerof the 2008 Beijing Olympic PrizeGiving podium.Also present was MsArwen

International Officer, representedthe University and guests ofhonour included senior officialsfrom the British Embassy inBeijing.

The UK alumni ball isorganised by the BritishCouncil and this yearover 300 alumni fromthe various Universitiesattended.
The University is namedafter one of the greatestBritish engineers in history:Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
Born in 1806, he designed tunnels,bridges, railway lines, buildings,docks and ships. His enormousbody of work included the GreatWestern Railway, which linkedBristol to London; the CliftonSuspension Bridge (did you knowour older halls of residence are allnamed after one of Brunel’sbridges?) and the first steamship toprovide a regular transatlanticservice, the ‘Great Western’. Back in2002 Brunel was voted second outof the 100 greatest Britons by thepeople of the UK and we are proudto continue his legacy of innovationand entrepreneurial spirit.
