“For Christ also hath oncesuffered for sins, the just for theunjust, that he might bring us toGod…” (I Peter 3:18)

The passage above says thatChrist suffered once for our sins.

The phrase “hath once” is a translation of one Greek word which means “of per-petual validity, not requiring repetition”. To Peter’s Jewish audience, which at thattime believed and practiced repeated sacrifices for sins, this was a particularlypowerful statement. There is the element of finality being expressed - that therewas nothing else to be added or accomplished. Jesus paid it all – once!

This truth is repeated elsewhere such as in Hebrews 9:27-28: “And as it is ap-pointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: so Christ was once of-fered to bear the sins of many.” Again, in Hebrews 10:10 it reads, “By the whichwill we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”Verse 14 of the same chapter reads: “For by one offering he hath perfected forever them that are sanctified.”

The idea is one of both finality and sufficiency. Jesus Christ gave a one time, finalsacrifice for sins. It was not perpetual as it was before. It is not perpetual today,as is claimed in some churches, through the Lord’s Supper. It was a one-timefinal, effectual sacrifice for sins forever. You must trust that sacrifice for your for-giveness before a holy God.
