1. Understanding Alabama School Accounting System

Professional Certificate Core Course/Continuing Education Course This session addresses the issues of school funding for school districts in Alabama. Course will include state and federal funding allocation formulas, fiscal accountability law, financial reporting and the Alabama school accounting manual.

2. Payroll Guidelines and Regulations Under IRS

Payroll Certificate Elective Course/Continuing Education Course This session will review IRS specific laws and provide payroll personnel information for processing and reporting according to the IRS. In this session an IRS representative will discuss tax withholdings including the revised Form W-4 and how they should be handled, understanding of other IRS requirements such as worker classification, verification of employment eligibility, fringe benefits, tax depositing and reporting.

3. NextGen Applications for Local Schools Continuing Education Course Are you utilizing all the features and applications available in the NextGen software? This session will review the applications/modules in NextGen to streamline the processes and procedures and increase the efficiency in the financial operations at the local school level.

8:00 a.m.—11:30 a.m. Pre-Conference Workshops (choose one)

1. Risk Management

Elective Course/Continuing Education Course Risk Management procedures properly applied will assist you in reducing and mitigating risk to students, school board staff, property and reputation. This session will discuss how to prepare for problems and ways of controlling the impact of events. Topics will include identifying the types of risks, assessing the risks and managing the risks.  

2. FLSA Wage & Hour Laws

Payroll Certificate Core Course/Continuing Education Course This session will include an in-depth review of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Including review of the regula-tions regarding exempt employees, overtime issues, dual employment and other wage and hour issues relat-ed to school boards. 

3. Financial Reporting for Student Activity Funds

Continuing Education Course Because of frequent leadership turnover and limited understanding of school policies parent and student organizations can cause numerous problems for local schools. This session will discuss the recommended financial procedures that these organizations need to follow to be more productive and reduce audit risk.

Elective Course/Continuing Education Course The session is designed for CSFOs and will cover all basic information for both new and experienced users. Session will include general use of the financial applications within the Nextgen Software to include General Ledger, Payroll, General Reporting, and Financial Reporting within the application. Course will also review the enhancements and reporting capabilities in the software 2. Data Breach Prevention & Social Media Awareness Elective Course/Continuing Education Course Preventing data breaches and identity theft takes more than technology or good procedures. Stopping data breaches before they occur requires building a “Breach-Free Culture” within your school. Properly training employees across all areas of data protection is a necessary component to breach-proof environment. Although cyber-criminals may get the headlines and media attention, the fact is most breaches are caused by human error and process failures, not advanced hackers. Properly training employees and bringing awareness to them is a necessary component in keeping them from making mistakes that will cause a major liability.

The AASBO Certificate Program for the Alabama Association of School Business Officials is sup-ported by the State of Alabama Department of Education, Division of Administrative and Finan-cial Services.

 

 

AASBO Professional Certificate Program Graduates - all courses will count toward your Professional Certification maintenance requirement of 18 Continuing Professional Education hours per year (October through September).

Payroll Personnel Certificate Program Graduates- all courses will count toward your Professional Certification maintenance requirement of 12 Continuing Professional Education hours per year (October through September).

Local School Financial Management Certificate Program Graduates- all courses will count toward your Professional Certification maintenance requirement of 9 Continuing Professional Education hours per year (October through September).

REGISTRATION FEES

The Registration Fee for the Annual conference is $300 if received before March 13, 2020. After March 13th the fee is $350.00. Pre-conference Workshop Registration Fee is $100, in addition to the conference.

This conference will sell out. Early registration is encouraged.

LOCATION AND LODGING

The AASBO Annual Conference will be at the Perdido Beach Resort located at 27200 Perdido Beach Blvd. Orange Beach, AL 36561.

Lodging is the responsibility of each participant. A room block is available at the Perdido Beach Resort. The group booking code will be included in your conference confirmation email. The hotel will sell out—early registration is advised.

OVERFLOW HOTELS WILL BE POSTED ON THE AASBO WEBSITE

Complimentary parking is available at the Perdido Beach Resort for conference attendees.

If you are attending the pre-conference workshops, breakfast and lunch is provided on Wednesday, May 6, 2020.

If only attending the conference, breakfast is provided on Thursday and Friday morning and heavy hors d’oeuvres at the reception on Wednesday night.

Courses will be submitted for approval by the Alabama Board of Public Accountancy.
