The Hampton Arts Initiative: Where History

Inspires Art...

The 2013 HAI project is made possible with support from the Board of Directors and the Women’s Committee of HHI, the National Park Service, the National Park Foundation, the Citizens of Baltimore County, and friends of Hampton.

Historic Hampton, Inc. (HHI)

is pleased to announce the 2nd annual evening event of the Hampton Arts Initiative:

Friday, Oct. 25th, 6 to 8 p.m. The Orangery at Hampton

The mission of the Hampton Arts Initiative (HAI) is to encourage artists to discover, or rediscover, Hampton, to be inspired by its beauty, and to bring attention to this wonderful resource. By encour-aging artists and patrons to visit often, create, and get involved with programming and events, the HAI hopes to attract new audiences who will help to generate awareness and stewardship so that Hampton Nat’l Historic Site may continue to serve as a national treasure for generations to come.

A Message from Ann H. Boyce, President of HHI

As we head into Spring, Hampton continues to buzz with construction. The Sequester will affect hours of operation (so please call before you visit) but the construction funds, having already been allocated, will allow work to continue. It is our hope that Hampton’s neighbors, so patient with the rumbling of activity, will take advantage of the beauty of the rest of the park and enjoy exploring new areas. At times like these, when funding is limited, it is gratifying to know that Hampton's stewards, both public

and private, have left us with a site that is in pristine condition. Please join us in supporting activities that directly support Hampton, including the Women's Committee Luncheon and the historic music

workshop offered by Celtic duet Magical Strings, and by taking time to enjoy Spring’s splendor by strolling the grounds, patronizing the

Museum Shop, and touring the beautiful Hampton Mansion.

Annual Giving: the Board of HHI would like to thank all of those who

supported our 2012-2013 Annual Giving Campaign, and especially

those who donated $300+. We would also like to encourage others to

join “The 300 Club” by increasing their donations or by making new

contributions. Memorial gifts are also welcome. The 300 Club in-

cludes: Robert & Barbara Bonhage, John & Ann Boyce, Jeff & Cath-

erine Burnett, Helen & Chace Davis, Rhoda Dorsey, Gayle Economos,

James Eichelberger, Charlotte Goodwin, John & Linda McCleary,

Suzanne Merryman, Bill & Peggy Meyers, Roger & Kathy Novak, Mr.

& Mrs. George Rich, Gail Saillitt, Gregg & Susan Somerville-Hawes,

and Paul & Bella Zugates. Your generosity goes a long way toward

helping HHI to support Hampton National Historic Site!

The Hampton Renaissance Continues! It has been several years since Hampton Mansion reopened following installation of state-

of-the-art fire suppression and climate control systems. This was followed by the NPS in-

stallation of exhibits in the Lower House, Slave Quarters, Tenant Farmers’ Quarters and

Log Cabin. HHI, along with Baltimore County Government, then provided core funding

for the Dove Cote restrooms. As a result, overall visitation to Hampton National Historic

Site jumped from approximately 15,000 six years ago to around 43,000 last year.

HNHS is now poised to hit new benchmarks with the completion of the Collec-

tion Storage Building and Visitor Contact Station (left). A new entrance road

will provide safer access to the site while allowing for the planting of an orchard

on the historic location, presently occupied by the current entrance road. In addi-

tion to these improvements, HNHS is implementing enhanced programming:

Thanks to the generosity of a Ridgely descendent, the Henry White Family Pa-

pers (the extensive archives of one of America’s leading diplomats), are being

digitized. Last month HNHS launched a lesson plan based on the papers. Written

to the new Common Core standard for students in 6-8th grades, the plan focuses

on a rare photo of Henry White, Theodore Roosevelt and Kaiser Wilhelm. Now

teachers can plan lessons about this important Hampton-related figure without ever leaving the classroom. History

was made again on March 20 when 17 people from India, Iran, Argentina and other countries took the Oath of Alle-

giance in Hampton’s Orangery to become citizens of the United States. Gregory Collett, Baltimore District Director

for the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services stated: "We naturalize people every day of the week, usually in an

office, but it is more meaningful when we come to places like Hampton that helped shape American history." Their

first action as "new" Americans”… to tour Hampton National Historic Site!

Exciting upcoming events include the Baltimore School for the Arts’ performance of “Torn Asunder” on Saturday,

April 27 at 2 pm at HNHS. This production will focus on the impact of the Civil War at places like Hampton. Stu-

dents researched Baltimore County history at the Maryland Historical Society, made their own costumes, assisted in

developing the scripts, and will perform the show as they seek to use Hampton as a location for place-based learning.

HHI and NPS recently collaborated on a grant proposal through the Nat’l Park Foundation. If awarded, this will build

upon last year’s success of the HAI by funding transportation to the site for

underserved schools and enhancing pro-

grams that combine history and art into

HNHS’ educational programming.

On Sunday, May 5, HNHS will host an

antique car rally. June 9 will feature a talk

on the historic use of herbs, and on August

10 & 11 HNHS will showcase games and

pastimes of a bygone era. Expect changes

on the grounds, too, with the planting of heirloom corn and wheat on the farm, and

replanting two parterres of the historic falling garden. This is an exciting time to be

involved as the Hampton Renaissance continues!

A Strong Body, Mind and Spirit: African American Women of the Antebellum Era

The 7th Annual Symposium on African American History in the Mid-Atlantic will

take place on Wednesday, APRIL 10 from 8:30 am to 1 pm, Merrick Hall at Goucher

College. For more info: www.nps.gov/hamp. For registration please contact Ranger
