“Building Pressurization to Control Moisture Migration”

ASHRAE recommends that the building HVAC system be designed to maintain a pressure difference between the indoors and the outdoors to control moisture migration across the building enclosure. But many HVAC systems

are incapable of achieving the desired pressure. Further, the building pressurization is often the

opposite of what is desired. These mechanical system deficiencies can force water vapor into exterior

constructions and cause architectural failures. Why are HVAC systems inadequate, and how much liability does

the Mechanical Engineer share when the building enclosure fails due to excessive moisture migration?

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Dear Rocky Mountain ASHRAE: Welcome back! It’s that time of year again where the Rocky Mountain Chapter of ASHRAE will be pushing forth full steam ahead. Let me first both congratulate and thank our 2011-2012 Past President Adam Bishop. Adam performed his duties to highest levels and continued to set the bar extremely high for those that follow him. I’m incredibly excited to have an amazing team of people to help run the chapter this year. Our roster is included in this newsletter. If you have not had a chance to meet these individuals, I encourage you to do so. The Board of Governors recently attended the Region IX Conference of Regional Chairs in Billings, MT. This annual conference is attended by the 13 chapters in our region to discuss issues relating to ASHRAE and general business of the region. Once again, the Rocky Mountain Chapter received countless awards and praise for everyone’s efforts. The chapter received awards for having the Top Presidential Award of Excellence (PAOE), Research Promotion Pinnacle award for the most dollars raised by a chapter in all of society (Michelle Swanson), best chapter website (Tony Anderson), membership red ribbon award (Chris Garofoli), just to name a few. Next year’s CRC will be held in Boise, ID. There are a number of opportunities for you to get intimately involved with the chapter. Our committees are always looking for additional volunteers. The Rocky Mountain Chapter will host the ASHRAE Summer Meeting in June of 2013. We will need volunteers for that event as well so if you get your name in there we’ll be able to find something for you to do. We have a fantastic list of programs scheduled for this year under Jessie Jones’ direction. All meetings will be held on the first Wednesday of every month with January being the only exception due to the holidays. We will continue with the same meeting model as years past where we have a variety of both lunch and dinner meetings. I would like to welcome both Tony Anderson and Mike Day as our newest Board of Governor members. Tony's primary responsibility is the editor of the newsletter that you are now reading from front to back. Mike has joined us as one of our two Directors. I’m really excited for this coming year for the Rocky Mountain Chapter and serving you as the President. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. Best Regards,

Michelle Swanson Chapter President Rocky Mountain Chapter of ASHRAE

PROJECT UPDATE - 2013 SUSTAINABILITY PROJECT Denver Rescue Mission | Lawrence Street

Project Description: In preparation for the 2013 Annual ASHRAE Society Meeting, the Rocky Mountain chapter has selected the Denver Rescue Mission Lawrence Street facility as the Annual Meeting Sustainability Project in an effort to reduce the environmental impact of the meeting. Each year, ASHRAE selects a Sustainability Project for members to volunteer their time and services. This project traditionally is done for a non-profit organization that would significantly benefit from energy efficiency upgrades and improved systems. Project Update: The Sustainability Project is underway and the committee has made exciting progress over the summer! The following activities highlight the work that has been completed to date. If you or your organization would like to assist in the 2013 Annual Meeting Sustainability Project, please contact Brian Lynch at 720.472.1037 or

ROCKY MOUNTAIN ASHRAE HISTORY “2011 ASHRAE Brewery Tour”

Approximately one year ago Jessie Jones was working hard to organize the annual 2011 ASHRAE Brewery Tour. The tour occurred on Friday, October 21st, 2011 and lasted all day. A tour bus was rented for the occasion and was mostly filled. The group visited 4 breweries during the day ranging from small to large. The first stop was Coors Brewery in Golden, CO. This brewery was the largest visited that day by several orders of magnitude. The standard tour at Coors is designed to handle busloads of people, and it handled the entire ASHRAE group well. The next stop was Tommy Knockers in Idaho Spring, CO. The group was given a personalized tour of the entire facility 5 people at a time. Steve Indrehus, Brewery Operations Manager, guided these tours and catered to the engineering nature of the group. Next, the group headed to Del Norte in Denver, CO. The owners of the business again gave our group a personalized tour of the facility. The last visit was to Strange Brew, also in Denver, CO. This brewery was the smallest of the 4 breweries. The group was split up and given short tours of the brewing facilities. The October 2011 tour was a success, and now it is time to start thinking about the upcoming October 2012 tour.

ASHRAE SOCIETY NEWS – CONTINUED Important Manual for Chapter Operations Update Members Council approved a recommendation to revise Section 6, Chapter Publications in the Manual for Chapter Operations (MCO). This change was made because of the number of complaints received concerning distribution of member contact information to companies and vendors. The majority of the complaints were traced back to the chapter product directories. Due to the ASHRAE privacy policy, revisions to the MCO were needed. Section 6 is posted on the ASHRAE website on the MCO webpage. All revisions made have been highlighted in this section. For more information concerning the MCO, chapters or regions, please contact Vickie Grant at [email protected] or 678-539-1156. Chapter Publications (Section 6)

We have prepared a page detailing the story of ASHRAEjobs.com and its success here. The Career Center offers several benefits for hiring authorities and job seekers:

• ASHRAE Jobs is user friendly. Its products and services equal the offerings from traditional big box boards such as Monster.com, yet its information and postings are specific to the ASHRAE Community.

• Due to its focus on HVAC&R engineering, Job seekers have a more effective search experience. Employers also have immediate access to a pre-filtered pool of talent for skills and experience.

• A unique feature is ASHRAE members are highlighted in search results. The online job application and resume forms require applicants to identify themselves by membership status. Employers can sort applications and resumes by membership status.

I would invite your Chapter to participate in this program by creating a link on your website to the ASHRAE Jobs Career Center. You will find attached a copy of the logo to use on your homepage. We would also appreciate your help to spread the news about ASHRAE Jobs’ success through an announcement through your eNewsletter, blogs, etc. If you have questions, I or John von Harz (Services Manager at [email protected]) will be pleased to answer them.
