CARTRIDGE, 81 MILLIMETER: ILLUMINATING, INFRARED (IR), MS16 W/FUZE, MECHANICAL TIME SUPERQUICK, M776

Type Classification:

(To be assigned). Use:

This cartridge is an Infrared (IR) Illuminating round developed for use in the I-81MM M252 Mortar System to take advantage of the night vision device and reduce friendly forces exposure to the enemy. Description: The complete round consists of an MTSQ fuze with an expulsion charge, a body tube and tail cone assembly containing an Infrared (IR) illuminant charge and a parachute assembly. The ignitions cartridge with integral percussion primer is assembled to the end of the fin assembly. The propellant charge is contained in four horse-shoe type propellant increments which are assembled around the fin assembly shaft. Functioning: When the cartridge is loaded, it slides down the mortar tube until the percussion primer in the ignition cartridge strikes the firing pin at the bottom of the tube. The percussion primer initiates the charge in the ignitions cartridge. The charge in the ignition

flashes through the holes in the shaft of the fin assembly and ignites the propelling charge. The gases from the burning propellant expand and propel the cartridge out of the mortar tube. The projectile is fin-stabilized in flight. Functioning of the time fuze detonates the expelling charge and the expelling charge separates the cone from the tube allowing the illuminant candle and parachute to fall freely. The parachute deploys to support the burning candle. Tabulated Data: Dimensions:

DIVERSIONARY CHARGE, MK 141, MOD 0

Type Classification: Security Risk Code (3) 1.2 G Use: The MK 141-0 Charge is deployed as depicted upon each illustrated instructions sheet which is enclosed in each packaged M191A1 Ammunition Box. Summarizing the deployment procedure, upon removal of the charge from the ammunition box, the individually sealed barrier bag and visually inspected, the charge is grasped such to retain security of the lever against the body of the charge. Removal of the safety cotter pins achieved by pulling upon the pull ring attached to the cotter pin. The MK 141 charge should be tossed a minimum of ten (10) feet from the zone of deployment., the main charge output should not viewed directly by personnel deploying the charge and (185) decibel rated hearing protection should be employed to preclude hearing damage. Description: The MK 141 Mod 0 Diversionary Charge is a manually deployed, non-fragmenting hand grenade intended to be used to produce an intense light and sound display for the purpose of disorienting personnel in a myriad of riot, crowd dispersal or hostage rescue applications. Th MK 141-0 Charge consists of two (2) primary components. The base is manufactured from a molded and machined polyurethane foam material enveloped in an aluminum foil wrap for electrostatic discharge (ESD) purposes and contains the photo flash main charge.

The fuze comprised of a 10% glass fiber filled high density polyethylene compound molded and assemble in a comparable configuration to that of a conventional M42/M46 Hand Grenade Fuze. Mating of the two (2) primary components is achieved by torquing the interfacing threads and assembly security is maintained by the application of both a cyanoacrylate adhesive and RTV based sealant. The MK 141-0 Charge explosive train consists of an initiating source, energized by the spring loaded contact of a striker assembly onto the percussion primer. Upon removal of the cotter pin and subsequent release of the lever, two (2) independent pyrotechnic delay trains each followed by a respective output charge and the main charge which produces the audio and visual display of the item. The intent of the initial pyrotechnic delay and output charge is to propel the fuze from the body within a nominal 1.4 seconds duration following release of the lever so that the frangible body will not be consumed in the energy release of the main charge and to ignite the secondary pyrotechnic delay remaining in the body. Upon ignition, the secondary pyrotechnic delay train within the body burns for eighty (80) millisecond minimum duration to assure adequate fuze ejection and, via the secondary output charge, ignites the main charge contained within the body. A summary of the ambient MK 141-0 Charge burn time performance criteria, as determined from the time the striker contacts the percussion primer, is as follows: Fuze Time Delay - 1.260 seconds minimum, Body Time Delay - 0.0080 seconds minimum, MK141-0 Time Delay - 1.340 - 1.840 seconds.

Output of (1) diversionary device measured 5 feet from unit at same height, maximum pressure 5.000 pounds per square inch (DB of 185). Minimum

pressure 2.800 pounds per square inch (DB of 176). Light output is approximately 2 million candlepower for 4 milli-seconds

GRENADE, RUBBER BALL NON-LETHAL

Grenade with Twist Locking Grenade without Twist Locking Safety Clip Safety Clip Type Classification: Std Use: The Rubber Ball Non-Lethal Grenade is intended for use in crowd control situations where the use of Non-Lethal force is desired. Description: The grenade body is a rubber sphere that contains a fuze well liner and is filled with a minimum of 100 rubber ball fragments having a minimum diameter of 0.25 inches and have a hardness of 70 to 80 Durometer “A” scale. The grenade fuze is a M201A1-1 delay-detonating fuze. The fuze assembled contains a striker, striker spring, safety lever, safety pin with pull ring, and a detonator assembly. Functioning: Removal of the safety pin permits release of the safety lever. When the safety lever is released, it

is forced away from the grenade body by a striker acting under the force of a striker spring. The striker rotates on its own axis and strikes the percussion primer. The primer initiates the first fire mixture. The fuze delay element, ignition mixture, and grenade starter mixture and output charge are initiated in turn by the preceding component. The grenade body will separate dispelling the rubber ball fragments. The differences in the two grenades pictured above include the addition on the new NSN grenade with a twist locking safety clip for the pull ring and an extended lever. The twist lock safety clip requires the pull ring to be rotated 90 degrees before the ring can be released from the lock. The ring and arming pin can then be pulled from the fuze allowing the lever to be released. The extension to the lever allows the lever to better conform to the shape of the grenade body and reduce the risk of the lever not being inserted into the shotgun mounted launch cup. The inclusion of a pull ring safety clip enables a closer tolerance to be held on the pull pin force. Note: All other technical data remains the same.

FUZE, GRENADE, PRACTICE, NON-LETHAL MK 439 MOD 0

Type Classification: Std Use: The new GG14 practice grenade fuze is specifically designed to replicate the action of the rubber ball grenade (DODIC GG04) when the fuze (issued separately) is mated with the new practice grenade body (DODIC GG13). Description: The fuze and body are produced with left-hand threads to prevent the GG14 from being used with any other grenade. Total time delay for the GG14 is 3.0 seconds + 0.5 seconds. The GG14 has the same physical characteristics as the fuze contained in the rubber ball grenade GG04 but it does not separate from the body after fuze activation. The GG14 produces an audible and visible indication of final initiation following the 3 second time delay. Functioning: Removal of the safety pin permits release of the safety lever. When the safety lever is released, a striker acting under the force of a striker spring forces it away from the grenade body. The striker rotates on its own axis and strikes the percussion primer. The primer initiates the first fire mixture, the fuze delay element and ignition mixture.

Use:

Nonelectric Blasting Cap M11 is used to deto-nate all standard military explosives or initiate shocktube blasting caps.

Description:

The M11 is a small aluminum tube filled withexplosives (detonator) factory-crimped to a 30-footlength of shock tube. Shock tube is a thin plastic tubewith a thin layer of special explosive material depos-ited on its interior surface. A special plastic connec-tor (called a "J" hook) is attached to the sealed end ofthe shock tube which is sealed with a small cover. The "J" hook facilitates quick and easy attachmentonto a detonating cord (e.g., a ring main). Since theM11 is commercially used in boreholes, two brightlycolored plastic flags are attached to the shock tubenear the detonator end. A red flag is attached 1 meterfrom the detonator and a yellow flag is attached 2meters from the detonator as a safety precaution. These flags indicate that caps are nearby.

Functioning:

The M11 functions by transmitting an initiatingshock (or small detonation) through its shock tubeinto its detonator. The shock wave coming throughthe shock tube initiates a small amount of a fairly sen-sitive explosive in the aluminum tube detonator. Thisexplosive then initiates a larger amount of a less sen-sitive, more powerful explosive which actuates theexternal charge or device to which the cap is attached. The shock tube itself must be initiated by an M81igniter or a blasting cap.

.

NOTE

The explosion of the shock tube istotally contained within the plastictubing, but the explosion of the det-onator is just like any other militarystrength blasting cap.

DEMOLITION FUZE ELECTRIC M1134A4

Type Classification: Security Risk Code: TBD Use: Utilize with the M58 and M59 Series Linear Demolition Charges. Description: The M1134A4Fuze is designed to detonate the M58 and M59 series Linear Demolition Charges. The fuze is connected between the fuze connector front half on the charge and the fuze connector rear half on the arresting cable. The fuze is placed in the fuze holder container after connections are made. The rocket motor is initiated and pulls the charge out of the container and fuze from the fuze holder. The extraction of the arming pin occurs when the forward motion of the charge and rocket motor is halted by the arresting cable. The tension on the arming wire, which is woven into the arresting cable, provides the force necessary to break the fuze shear pin and extract the arming pin. Extracting the arming pin enables the fuze rotor to rotate, opening two micro switches completing an electrical circuit to the fuze circuit board. When the charge has been deployed, the fuze is command initiated. Using a blast machine or other DC current power supply, an electrical charge is

applied to the selector switch/assembly control box, which will continue through the arresting cable to the fuze connector. The electrical charge will enter the fuze passing through the open micron switches, into the circuit board timer. The circuit board timer will send controlled electrical pulse to the bellows, which will initiate and rotate the rotor, aligning the firing leads with the detonators. The circuit board timer electrical pulses will then initiate the firing leads, which will initiate the fuze detonators which will blow through the base of the fuze, initiating relay cups crimped to detonating cord which will initiate the C-4 blocks on the Linear Demolition Charge. Note: There is a 5.5 second delay between the time the electrical charge is applied and the detonation of the charge. Tabulated Data: NEW......................... 1,945 mg Detonators (2):

Type Classification: Security Risk Code (2) CG-CL IX-B Use: The Flexible Charge is used by Explosive Ordnance Disposal personnel to remotely low order initiate (blow apart rather than detonate) or cut open explosive ordnance devices in order to render them safe to handle or transport. The Flexible Charge can be cut to provide the length of charge required for the job at hand. Description: The Flexible Charge is a long, thin lead-sheathed rod of explosive with a special cross-section shape (see illustration) that concentrates the explosives energy in a line to provide a cutting edge. The lead alloy sheath provides a great deal of flexibility so the charge can be bent around a round target item as small as two inches in diameter. The ends of the charge are capped with a soft rubbery elastomer flexible epoxy to provide a moisture seal until the charge sheath is cut to size for use. Cutting is done by scoring the sheath with a knife and breaking it along the score. The different charges all come in six foot lengths and differ in cross section dimensions and the amount of explosive load. They are designated by the amount of explosive per foot contained. After the proper charge is cut to the size specified in the appropriate Render Safe Procedure (RSP), it is primed with a military blasting cap and secured to (or adjacent to) the spot specified in the RSP. Initiation of the blasting cap detonated the Flexible Charges explosive load. The V-shaped notch in the metal sheath and the Flexible Charge itself concentrates a large proportion of the detonations energy into an intense Acutting edge@ detonation wave. This concentrated detonation wave allows application of a large amount of a large amount of energy to a small area of the target.

DETONATOR, NON-ELECTRIC, MK 123 MOD 0

Type Classification: Security Risk Code (3) CG-CL IX-B Use: The MK 123 Nonelectric Detonator with pyrotechnic leads (Shock Tubes -ST) are used as initiating agents. The nonelectric detonator is used in place of the M7 Nonelectric Blasting Cap in a variety of blasting applications: such as EOD, SEALS weapons systems, and general purpose demolitions in which a lightweight, low explosive weight, nonfragmenting (pyrotechnic lead only) and waterproof system is desired. Nonelectric detonators are operable to a depth of 200 feet in sea water. The unit is a dual version that provides for redundant and/or multiple set ups required for the job at hand. Description: The MK 123 Nonelectric Detonator Fig 1 consist of a double strand nonfragmenting, co-extruded plastic polyethylene-surlyn pyrotechnic lead (shock tube) containing less than 0.1 grains per foot of HMX explosive with a factory crimped and sealed M7 equivalent detonator at one end. The other end (bitter or initiating end) is also sealed. The nonelectric

detonator has the equivalent blasting cap output of 13.5 grains of RDX explosive. The detonator is approximately 2.34 inches long and 0.24 inch in diameter. The pyrotechnic lead is approximately 0.150 inch in diameter and fully contains the shock tube reaction. When initiated the pyrotechnic lead propagates at approximately 6500 feet per second. Knots, bends kinks, and stretching will not affect propagation. The pyrotechnic lead contains such a small quantity of explosive material the athe outer surface of the pyrotechnic lead remains intact during and after functioning. The pyrothechnic leads are olive drab in color and the olive drab pigment is sufficient to conceal the fash during functioning. The dual extruded pyrotechnic leads are assembled together in a single plastic sheath with two M7 equivalent detonators sealed on the output end. One cap has a protective sleeve to prevent the caps from damaging each other during shipment. Functioning: The nonelectric detonator can be initiated by detonation or by shock from a primer or other igniter into the center core.

Page 92: 55435064 USMC Technical Data Sheet for Less Than Lethal Munitions Demolition Associated Items USA 2007

NOTE: The non-electric detonator pyrotechnic lead cannot be initated by radio frequency energy nor by electro-static spark, stray electrial energy, nor flame, nor friction, nor impact found in normal conditions. But can be initiated by BULLET IMPACT. Type Classification:

Std A MSR 05963001.

Use:

Nonelectric Blasting Cap M12 is used to relay ashock tube detonation impulse from an M81 initiator(or another relay cap) to another relay cap or to a highstrength shock tube blasting cap (e.g., the M11)which initiates standard military explosives. TheM12 is used only as a relay device. It does not havesufficient output to initiate most military explosives.

Description:

The M12 is a small aluminum tube filled withexplosives (detonator) factory-crimped to a 500-footlength of shock tube. Shock tube is a thin plastic tubewith a thin layer of special explosive material depos-ited on its interior surface. Splicing material is sup-plied with the spool to make at least five splices. Aspecial plastic clamp is attached to the detonator tofacilitate quick and easy attachment to the shock tubeof up to five other blasting cap components.

Functioning:

The M12 functions in transmitting an initiatingshock (or small detonation) through its shock tube

into its detonator. The shock wave coming throughthe shock tube initiates a small amount of sensitiveexplosive in the detonator. This explosive then ini-tiates a small amount of a less sensitive, more power-ful explosive which actuates up to five shock tubesheld by the plastic connector. The M12’s shock tubemust be initiated by a blasting cap or by a specialTime Blasting Fuse Igniter, the M81.

NOTE

The older model igniter, the M60will NOT secure or reliably initiateshock tube.

Use:

The M81 Igniter is used to ignite time blastingfuse or to initiate the shock tube of the new shocktube nonelectric blasting caps.

Description:

The M81 is a small plastic tube with a pull ringon a thin rod projecting from one end, a safety (cot-ter) pin that goes laterally through the tube and ascrew cap that secures a holding mechanism for thefuse or shock tube on the other end. A two-pieceplastic plug comes secured into the hole in the screwend cap that will be used to accommodate the shocktube or time blasting fuse. The two-piece design ofthe shipping plug allows proper securing of shocktube (with just inner piece removed) or time blastingfuse (with both pieces removed). To further differen-tiate the M81 from the almost identical M60 Igniter, the plug and the screw end cap are colored black onthe M81 while the similar parts are olive drab on theM60. The bodies and upper screw caps of both ignit-ers are olive drab and the nomenclature on both itemsis stenciled in yellow.

NOTE

Shock tube is a thin plastic tubewith a thin layer of special explo-sive material deposited on its inte-rior surface.

Functioning:

The M81 is manually actuated by the operator. The sequence is as follows: The operator loosens thescrew cap and removes just the inner piece of theshipping if shock tube is to be used. If time blastingfuse is to be used, both pieces of the shipping plug areremoved. The freshly cut off end of the shock tube ortime blasting fuse is inserted in the hole from whichthe plug was removed. The screw cap is tightened tosecure the fuse or shock tube; the safety (cotter) pin isremoved; the operator pulls the pull ring; the rod onthe pull ring pulls the firing pin against the force of aspring. When the limit of travel is reached, the pullring rod releases the firing pin which is forced by thespring into the M42 primer which fires with a flameand an explosive shock which ignites the fuse or ini-tiates the shock tube.
