Router
คือ อปุกรณ์ที่ท าหน้าที่เชื่อมต่อระบบเครือข่ายอย่างหนึ่ง ซึ่งถ้า
แปลความหมายค าว่า Route ก็คือ ถนน นั่นเอง ดังนั้น การ
เช่ือมต่อคอมพิวเตอร์ด้วย Router ท าให้เราสามารถเช่ือมต่อ
คอมพิวเตอร์ได้มากกว่าหนึ่งเครื่องในเวลาเดียวกัน ซึ่ง Router
นั้นจะมีซอฟต์แวร์ที่ใช้ในการควบคุมการท างานเรียกว่า
Internetwork Operating System (IOS) และตัว
Router จะมีช่องที่ใช้เสียบต่อสายสัญญาณเรียกว่า Port LAN
ซึ่งโดยทั่วไปมักมี 4 Ports หรือมากกว่า ใน Router 1 ตัว
A router is a device that forwards data
packets between computer networks. This creates an
overlay internetwork, as a router is connected to two or
more data lines from different networks. When a data
packet comes in one of the lines, the router reads the
address information in the packet to determine its
ultimate destination. Then, using information in
its routing table or routing policy, it directs the packet
to the next network on its journey. Routers perform the
"traffic directing" functions on the Internet. A data
packet is typically forwarded from one router to
another through the networks that constitute the
internetwork until it reaches its destination node.
Gateway
เป็นอุปกรณ์ที่มีความสามารถสูงในการเช่ือมต่อเครือข่ายต่างๆ เข้าด้วยกัน โดยสามารถเช่ือมต่อ LAN หลายๆ เครอืข่ายที่ใช้โปรโตคอลต่างกัน และใช้สื่อส่งข้อมูลต่างชนิดกันได้อย่างไม่มีขีดจ ากัด ตัวอย่างเช่น เชื่อมต่อ Ethernet LAN ที่ใช้สายส่งแบบ UTP เข้ากับ Token Ring LAN ได้
เกตเวยเ์ป็นเหมือนนักแปลภาษาที่ท าให้เครือข่ายที่ใช้โปรโตคอลต่างชนิดกันสามารถสื่อสารกันได้ หากโปรโตคอลที่ใช้รับส่งข้อมูลของเครือข่ายทั้งสองไม่เหมอืนกันเกตเวย์ ก็จะท าหน้าที่แปลงโปรโตคอลให้ตรงกับปลายทางและเหมาะสมกับอุปกรณ์ของฮาร์ดแวร์ที่แต่ละเครือข่ายใช้งานอยู่น้ันได้ด้วย ดังนั้นอุปกรณ์เกตเวยจ์ึงมีราคาแพงและขั้นตอนในการติดตั้งจะซับซ้อนที่สุดในบรรดาอุปกรณ์เครือข่ายทั้งหมด
In telecommunications, the term gateway has the
following meaning:
• Gateway is a router or a proxy server that routes
between networks
• Gateway Rule - Gateway should belong to same subnet
to which your PC belongs
• In a communications network, a network node equipped
for interfacing with another network that uses
different protocols.
• Loosely, a computer or computer program configured to
perform the tasks of a gateway. For a specific case,
see default gateway.
Modem
Modem มาจากค าว่า MOdulator/DEModulator โดยแยกการท างานออกเป็น
Modulation คือการแปลงสัญญาณดิจิตอล จากเครื่องคอมพิวเตอร์ ต้นทางให้
กลายเป็นสัญญาณอะนาลอกแล้วส่งไปตามสายโทรศัพท์ และ Demodulation คือการ
เปลี่ยนจากสัญญาณอะนาลอก ท่ีได้จากสายโทรศัพท์ให้กลับไปเป็นสัญญาณดิจิตอล เพื่อ
ส่งต่อไปยัง เคร่ืองคอมพิวเตอร์ปลายทาง สัญญาณจากคอมพิวเตอร์เป็นสัญญาณ
Digital มีแค่ 0 กับ 1 เท่าน้ัน เมื่อเปลี่ยนมาเป็นสัญญาณอะนาลอกอยู่ในรูปท่ีคล้ายกับ
สัญญาณไฟฟ้าของ โทรศัพท์ จึงส่งไปทางสายโทรศัพท์ได้ ส าหรับปัจจุบันน้ีความไวของ
โมเด็มจะสูงขึ้นท่ี 56 Kbps ตอนแรกมีมาตรฐานออกมา 2 อย่างคือ X2 และ
K56Flex ออกมาเพื่อแย่งชงิมาตรฐานกัน ท าให้สับสน ในการใช้งาน ต่อมา
มาตรฐานสากล ได้ก าหนดออกมาเป็น V.90 เป็นการยุติความไม่แน่นอน ของการใช้
งาน โมเด็มบางตัวสามารถ อัพเดทเป็น V.90 ได้ แต่บางตัวก็ไม่สามารถท าได้ ส าหรับ
โมเด็มปัจจุบันนี้ยังมีความสามารถในการรับส่ง Fax ด้วย ความไวในการส่ง Fax จะ
อยู่ที่ 14.4 Kb. เท่าน้ัน
A modem (modulator-demodulator) is a device
that modulates an analog carrier signal to encode digital
information and demodulates the signal to decode the
transmitted information. The goal is to produce
a signal that can be transmitted easily and decoded to
reproduce the original digital data. Modems can be used
with any means of transmitting analog signals, from light
emitting diodes to radio. A common type of modem is one
that turns the digital data of a computer into
modulated electrical signal for transmission over telephone
lines and demodulated by another modem at the receiver
side to recover the digital data.
