The Weekly Parsha

The Real Count

from the Ohr HaChaim commentary by Rabbi Chaim (ben Moshe) ibn Attar, translated and

annotated by Eliyahu Munk (from www.kabbalaonline.org)

“These are the accounts of the Tabernacle.” The only true count on earth was of ... the

Holy Tabernacle. The Torah uses the word “eleh/these” to

emphasize that the only true accounts are those following. Whatever man counts when he wants to determine the total of his possessions on earth are only apparent possession; their count therefore is also only apparent, deceptive. The only true count on earth was of the components which comprised the Holy Tabernacle because it was something containing divine input, terumat HaShem, and because G-d had His residence within it.

[The author implies that the very word mana/counts, testifies to its being misleading, deceptive. Perhaps we can support this with Balaam’s outcry: “mi mana afar Ya’acov/who can count the dust of Jacob?” (Num. 23:10) He referred to the deceptive nature of any “count.” E.M.]

The Torah may also have used the word pekudim in preference to such words as spor or minui as we have been told (Baba Metzia 42) that matters which have been “counted” do not enjoy lasting blessing. The Torah wishes to emphasize that all the materials contributed for the construction of the Holy Tabernacle enjoyed lasting blessing. Normally, G-d objects to a headcount; in this instance G-d did not object to a count. On the contrary, every single component contributed and accounted for increased the amount of blessings G-d bestowed on the Holy Tabernacle.

Gold Rush by Binyomin Adilman, based on Kedushat

Levi

Kabbalah teaches that the materials used in the Tabernacle rectified the elements of Creation.

They beat out thin leaves of gold and cut them into threads, which were then spun together with the royal blue, purple and crimson wool and the fine linen. (Ex. 39:3)

The Tabernacle was fashioned by Betzalel, who understood the will of G-d and understood how to fuse and combine the letters of the alef-bet, with which the world was created. Betzalel, who was imbued with

chochma, bina, and daat (wisdom, understanding and knowledge) built the Tabernacle patterned after the world which was created with chochma, bina, and daat. (Berachot 55a).

The Tabernacle was a model of the original work of Creation.

G-d originally intended to create the world using the attribute of strict justice. But G-d saw that the world would not be able to last, so He blended the attribute of chesed (mercy and kindness) and other attributes together with judgment in order to provide everything that His creations would need for their sustenance, both physical and spiritual. (Bereishit Rabba 12:15)

The Tabernacle was a model of the original work of Creation, and Betzalel, with his chochma, bina, and daat, and his artisans used the different attributes of the Creation in their work. This is alluded to by the gold and silver, and royal blue, purple, crimson and fine linen textiles that were used in constructing the Tabernacle. Gold represents the attribute of judgment, and silver the attribute of loving-kindness. The Tabernacle needed both precious metals to be complete. (See Zohar II 148a)

The gold (representing judgment) was beaten out very thin in order to reduce and sweeten the harsh effect of the attribute of judgment. Then it was cut into threads so that attribute of judgment would not be whole. Afterwards they were spun together with royal blue, purple, crimson and fine linen threads which represent other attributes of G-d’s Creation. Then the attribute of judgment would be appropriately blended into all aspects of Creation and help them when needed to subdue the power of the Evil Inclination.

Beyond the Mask Sunday, March 16, 2014, is the 2nd annual

See Beyond the Mask community-wide Purim extravaganza. For all ages alike, this fun-filled afternoon will be held at The Atrium in Greenspring Shopping Center from 1-1:45 pm.

The festivities will begin with a community gathering complete with music, costumes, art projects, prizes and more. Immediately following the celebration, from 1:45 to 3 pm, shalach manos will be distributed and delivered to those in need at various senior citizen facilities and hospitals.

See Beyond the Mask is an initiative which promotes Jewish unity inspired by the lessons of the holiday of Purim. The goal of the event is to look beyond our differences, beyond the masks we wear every day and see the Jewish community unified as one while performing acts of loving-kindness.

We are seeking volunteers to lead groups to deliver shaloch manos to various nursing homes and hospitals in the area, apply face tattoos to kids and help set up and clean up. For more information please contact Adriana Steinberg at [email protected] or Elaine Gerstenfeld at egerstenfeld@gmail. com.

Focus on Chesed

Chesed for the Week Included in the mitzvah of accompanying guests as they leave is making sure they

know how to get home from your house. If you have guests who are unfamiliar with the area, spend time with them going over the directions back to their place of lodging.

Shiur for the Week 1) After you have given your guests food and drink it is a mitzvah to escort them as

they leave your home. This is called the mitzvah of “levaya.” 2) A crucial part of the mitzvah of levaya is making sure your guests know the way

home. Getting lost on the way home can possibly lead to danger, chas v’shalom. Walking with them some of the way is a big part of the mitzvah.

3) Accompanying your guests creates powers of “shemira” (protection) for them on their way.

4) The host should walk his guests out the door a minimum of 4 amos (about 6 to 8 feet).

5) The five things a host should provide for his guests are: food, drink, a place to sleep, escorting them as they leave, and food and drink for their journey (“tzeidah la’derech”).

6) Avraham Avinu built large inns for lodging, along the roads, stocked with food and drink to provide for travelers. Our chachamim teach us that this is one of the meanings of the “Eshel” which Avraham Avinu planted. (Avos d’Rebbi Nasan, perek zayin and Sotah 10a).

7) Every community should arrange for people or organizations to care for their visitors and guests.

An Amazing Chesed (Heard from Rabbi Chaim Eisenstadt on his recent visit to Baltimore). There was a

holy Jew in Tevaria about 100 years ago named Rabbi Mattis Luria z”l. He davened, learned, and involved himself in avodas Hashem all day. When he and his wife grew old, she became incapacitated and he would take care of all of her needs. This was a very difficult task. The Slonimer Rebbe ztz”l asked him how he was able to do this each day. Rabbi Mattis Luria responded that during the course of his day in his avodas Hashem, he is never really certain if he is truly fulfilling the ratzon Hashem (G-d’s will), but he knows that when he is taking care of his wife’s needs that he is truly fulfilling ratzon Hashem.

“Olam chesed yibaneh” — “The world is built on kindness” Rabbi Menachem Goldberger
