Welcome to Bourne Park From The Club Secretary
John’s JottingsJohn’s JottingsGood afternoon everyone and wel-
come to Bourne Park for this Ryman league
Division One match against local rivals
Chatham Town.
Welcome to their Players, Officials and
Supporters and also to today’s match offi-
cials.
This game, of course, has been bought for-
ward from next Tuesday as both teams went
out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle. A bad
financial blow to both clubs. However, there is
still much to play for, not least a play off
place, so this should be a match well worth
watching.
Our record against Chatham Town over the
past few years has been exceptional.
However, with a new management team in
place and a number of
new players they have
started off this Ryman
league season in great
style.
They have a few of mem-
bers of their set up who
have been past players
here at Sittingbourne.
Former England Semi-Professional
International, Mark Newson who captained
Bournemouth and Fulham and is well known
to Maidstone United fans is one and Kevin
Watson who left us to go to The University of
Bath is the other. More recently, Anthony
Hogg has had a couple of spells here at
Bourne Park.
Paul Foley, along with Newson managed the
successful VCD Athletic side in the Ryman
North Division last season and only just
missed out on a play off place in that Division.
They took to Chatham a number of the play-
ers who were so successful last season so
you can see that our task today will not be an
easy one.
Everyone took great encouragement from the
last home game here when we soundly beat
Ramsgate 3-0. Gary made three changes
from the team that did so dismally at Bognor
Regis Town and all three grabbed the chance
with both hands (or feet!) and played very
well. In fact the whole team hit form. Added to
this three memorable goals and it was a great
night for The Brickies fans. The only down-
side was the very poor gate of 97. Even
allowing for the fact that England were play-
ing that night, it was still a very disappointing
performance. Still, as I have written in the
match report it was their loss as those who
stayed away missed a very entertaining
match well refereed by Mr Bentley.
Our “Captain’s page” today is written by
“stand in “ Captain, Tom
Bradbrook, and a very
good article it is.
Our next match is at
Godalming Town next
Saturday. Godalming are
a very strong team and
have started off this sea-
son in the same way that
they finished the last - very well indeed. The
following Saturday we are away again, this
time to Burgess Hill Town. It’s three away
matches on the trot then as on Tuesday 28th
September we are at Whitstable Town.
Directions to Godalming and Burgess Hill
can be found on Page 24. Our web page
(www.sittingbournefc.co.uk) will have detailed
directions to all away games.
Enjoy the game!
John
Today’s Visitors - A Brief History
Chatham Town FCChatham Town FCThe club was formed in 1882 as Chatham United, when Rochester Invicta merged with the football team of the
Royal Engineers Band with the intention of creating a side that was capable of holding their own with the best in
the country. Harry Hobart's plan being to bring together all the best players in the Medway Towns in one team.
They played their first match on 7th October that year, beating Harley Street F.C. 4-0. Owing to their strong Army
connections, Chatham soon moved to a regular home on "The Lines", where they were to remain until 1889 - the
beginning of season 1889/90 seeing them move to "Alderman Winch's Enclosed Ground", or as it is now better
known, the Maidstone Road Ground.
Having been formed with an eye to competing in the F.A. Cup, they went on to reach the Quarter-Finals in 1888-
89 - famously defeating Nottingham Forest after two replays, only to lose to the holders West Bromwich Albion.
This game, which was played on "The Lines" where an admission fee could not be charged owing to Army regula-
tions, was instrumental in the decision by the Football Association that all future matches in the competition must
be played on fully enclosed grounds, where the visiting club would receive a share of the gate money.
In 1894 Chatham were founder members of both the Southern League and the original Kent League, becoming
the first winners of the latter competition. They were also winners of the Kent F.A. Badge in the three seasons it
was contested, and the first winners of its successor, the Kent Senior Cup, in 1888/89. They also became the
first club to win the Thames and Medway Combination, the direct predecessor of the present Kent League, in
1896/97.
Chatham were forced to resign from the Southern League during the 1900/01 season, owing to financial difficul-
ties, but they soon rebuilt the club - playing as Chatham Amateurs for a brief spell in 1901 - before winning both
the Kent League and Thames & Medway Combination in 1903/04 without losing a single game in either competi-
tion. They repeated the feat the following season, losing just three games, whilst also defeating Sittingbourne 3-1
in the Final of the Kent Senior Cup.
The First World War brought an end to football in the Medway Towns, but Chatham were one of the first clubs
locally to return to action in 1919 - winning both the Kent Victory Cup and the Chatham Charity Cup (for the
eighth time) in a shortened season. They briefly rejoined the Southern League in 1920/21, after the formation of
a Third Division for the Football League had taken half its' members, but once again withdrew at the end of the
season finding that the increased travel costs were a severe drain on finances.
They once again had some success in the F.A. Cup during the 1920s, reaching the Second Round Proper in
1926/27 before losing to Norwich City - who beat them again, this time in the First Round Proper in 1928/29.
They also reached the First Round Proper in 1925/26 and 1927/28, losing to Sittingbourne and Kettering Town
respectively.
A third spell in the Southern League, starting in 1927/28 almost finished the club. They stuck it out for two sea-
sons this time, but once again the increased expenses - coupled with dwindling attendances - saw them drop
back into the Kent League. Things were to get progressively worse, and 1933/34 saw the club take voluntary rel-
egation into Division Two of the Kent League, which they won in 1934/35 without accepting promotion, before opt-
ing to revert to Amateur status. Having played in both the Kent League and Kent Amateur League in 1938/39,
they decided to play in just the latter competition the following season - only to see all football suspended with the
beginning of World War Two. They played just one game that season, beating London Paper Mills 2-0 on 26th
August - and would not play again until 1946.
Post War, Chatham won the Premier Division of the Kent Amateur League in 1946/47, which was to be their last
honour under that name - having previously dropped the 'United' in 1898. On 7th January 1947 they merged with
Shorts F.C., the combined club taking the name Chatham Town at the request of the local Council, and a place in
Division One of the Kent League for the following season. There they were to remain until the League disbanded
in 1959, whereupon they moved to the newly formed Aetolian League. During this latter period they appeared in
the Aetolian League Cup Final in each of the five seasons it was contested, though winning only once in 1962/63.
The following year they finally captured the League Championship, as well as the Aetolian/London League Cup
and then, when the Aetolian League formally merged with the London League they moved to the Metropolitan
League, in 1964/65, in search of stronger opposition. (Continued)

Chatham TownChatham TownHistory (Continued)
Although the club were drawing crowds of up to 1,000 playing against strong Non-League opponents as well as
sides from Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United, they lost no time in returning to the Kent League
when it was reformed in 1968. Up until their return to the Southern League in 1983, they had won the Kent
League on four further occasions, completing the League and Cup double in both 1971/72 and 1977/78.
For a brief period during the seventies they changed their name to Medway F.C., again at the request of the
local Council, but happily reverted back to Chatham Town in 1979. In 1980 they achieved their biggest post-
war success to date in winning the Eastern Professional Floodlight League, playing against some of the
strongest Non League clubs of the day, including Maidstone United, and defeating Chelmsford City in the Final
over two legs.
In 1983 Chatham returned to the Southern League for the fourth time, this time staying there until 1988, when
having failed to gain re-election they were relegated back to the Kent League - once again in severe financial
difficulties, with crowds often in double figures against poorly supported clubs, as opposed to the much healthier
attendances they had enjoyed in the Kent League against more local opposition.
After struggling during their first couple of seasons back in the Kent League, the real turnabout in the clubs' for-
tunes came with the appointment of popular former player John Adams as First Team manager, however
despite reaching the Third Qualifying Round of the F.A. Cup in 1993/94, taking the club to the Final of the Kent
Senior Trophy in 1995/96 and finishing in the top three of the Kent League for three successive seasons, he
was dismissed by the club following a disastrous start to the 1996/97 season.
1997/98 was to prove one of the most difficult seasons in the club's history. Problems with a new drainage sys-
tem meant that only a handful of games could be played at Maidstone Road - which led to a brief return to their
"spiritual home" on the Lines, courtesy of the Royal Engineers, as well as a brief ground-share with Gillingham
at Priestfield Stadium. The club returned home for the 1998/99 season under new manager Carl Laraman, for-
tunes improving immediately before in January Laraman left to take up a coaching position at Charlton Athletic.
His assistant, Steve Hearn, was appointed player-manager and finally led the club to the Kent League
Championship, and promotion to the Dr. Martens League, in 2000/01.
The club enjoyed a good start to their first season back at this level, but a poor run of results at the end of the
season led to Steve Hearn's resignation and the appointment of his assistant Peter Coupland as his successor.
After a bad start to the 2003/04 season, Clive Walker replaced Coupland. Things improved dramatically, and a
season that had looked certain to end in relegation, ended instead with Chatham in a mid-table position.
The 2004/05 season saw Chatham being placed in the newly formed Southern League Eastern Division. The
campaign got off to a promising start, with Chatham sitting as high as fourth in early October, however a poor
run of results coupled with Clive Walker's decision to return to his old club Dover Athletic, saw the Chats slip to
16th. Assistant Steve Binks was appointed manager and results improved towards the tail end of the season.
Chatham finished the season in 11th place, and was Kent's highest placed club.
Following yet another Pyramid reshuffle, the next few seasons saw the club ping-pong between the Ryman
League North and South Divisions with regular mid table positions. Frustratingly the club experienced regular
wins against top six and promoted sides but often followed up with defeats to bottom six sides. Season 2006/07
saw Phil Miles - another popular former player - move up to take over as Manager. December 2007 saw Phil
stand down due to work commitments with Steve Binks taking over the job again, then to be followed by 1st
team coach Alex O’ Brien stepping up for the 2009-10 campaign. Throughout this period the club's strong youth
policy provided several new established first team players and the club also achieved the coveted FA charter
Standard award.
Season 2010-11 saw yet another management change with Paul Foley and his assistant Mark Newson move
from VCD to take over the reins, combined with many new faces on the playing side. Vice-Chairman Barry
Adams instigated significant improvements to the playing surface so both of which will hopefully lead to better
times ahead for the “Chats”.

Match ReportMatch ReportSittingbourne 3 Ramsgate 0
Ryman league Division One SouthRamsgate visited Sittingbourne for the first time
since Sittingbourne inflicted a 6-1 defeat on them
towards the end of last season. In the Rams ranks
were a number of players and one official with
Sittingbourne connections. James Gregory, Lee
Hockey, Ben Laslett, Mark Lovell and Mitchell
Sherwood, all in the starting lineup for Ramsgate,
have all played for Sittingbourne and Richard
Langley, Assistant to Jim Ward, has been an
Assistant Manager at Sittingbourne.
After Sittingbourne’s comprehensive defeat at
Bognor on Saturday, Gary made three changes to
his line up. In at left back came Jack Hooper (for Joe
Foster). At number 5 was Laurence Harvey (for Joe
Bannan) and in midfield new signing from Cray
Wanderers, Sam Collins, came in for Jaie Nuttall. All
three made an impression on the game (in a good
way!) Harvey was commanding in the middle of
defence alongside Nick Reeves. Collins tenacious
tackling made him popular with the Sittingbourne
supporters and Jack Hooper was excellent in his
defensive role and also found time for a number of
forays forward culminating in some good crosses.
Missing from the bench was Elie Kayembe who had
a disagreement with Gary Abbott on Saturday at
Bognor when he refused to come on late in the
game as a substitute. Elie has been released. Also
missing through injury were Jimmy Bottle and Joe
Dowley whilst Ryan Johnson is on holiday.
Ramsgate started off well and could well have
scored after just twenty seconds when Tom
Tsangarides, only yards from goal with the ball at his
feet, was thwarted by a superb tackle from Billy
Manners.
Sittingbourne soon got into their stride and Akhazzan
had a goal bound shot deflected. Ryan Golding, who
was looking dangerous in his attacking role, then
twice had a chance to open the scoring for The
Brickies.
Then came the chance of the game so far.
Bradbrook raced down the right and crossed to
Golding unmarked in the goal area. His thundering
shot was brilliantly saved by Connor Quinn in the
Ramsgate goal although in truth he probably knew
very little about it.
Sittingbourne were on top now with Ramsgate rarely
troubling the solid Brickies defence. Their main
weapon seemed to be the long throws of Lee
Hockey but they were always cleared by the
defence. The best chance during this period fell to
Sittingbourne when Bradbrook’s header was cleared
by Gray. The Rams did have a cxhance though
when Axon tried to curl a shot around Reed but the
Brickies keeper easily dealt with it.
It was soon Sittingbourne in the ascendency again
though and Akhazzan’s powerful volley could only be
parried by Quinn.
On 50 minutes, Sittingbourne’s pressure and
Ramsgate’s “gung ho” defending told. Connor Quinn
raced out of his goal one time to many and his hasty
clearance fell to Ross Morley some forty yards from
The Rams goal. Morley calmly sent the ball back
over Quinn’s head and into the goal to put
Sittingbourne 1-0 up.
Shortly after, Quinn was in twice in action again.
Firstly, he was able to parry a powerful shot, this
time from Ryan Golding and then he raced out of
goal (again!) and Morley almost scored an identical
goal to his first but this time his long range shot went
just wide of a post.
After 72 minutes it was 2-0 to Sittingbourne. Joe
Horlock was given the ball wide on the right, raced
past two defenders, cut in towards the Ramsgate
goal and then blasted in an unstoppable shot. A real-
ly good individual goal.
Two minutes later it was all over for Ramsgate as
Sittingbourne sealed a convincing victory. Ross
Morley slipped the ball through to Tom Bradbrook
and Quinn (yes you’ve guessed it!) raced out of his
goal only for Tom Bradbrook to walk round him and
slot the ball into the empty net.
Last bit of meaningful action saw Ramsgate nearly
pull a goal back. Substitute Joe Taylor found himself
1 on 1 with Reed but the Sittingbourne goalkeeper
guessed right and kept the ball out and preserve a
clean sheet for Sittingbourne.
So, an emphatic win for Sittingbourne. The only dis-
appointing news on the night was the very poor
“local derby” attendance of 97. Must be one of the
lowest gates in games between these two sides.
Those who stayed away missed an entertaing game
with some good goals. John Pitts

TOM BRADBROOKTOM BRADBROOKTom has the pen and paper as well as the armband.....!
Hi everyone, this is your new skipper speaking !
It is a pleasure for me to captain Sittingbourne after being here for the last couple of years. It’s a great club to
play for and I hope that we can achieve all the things the managers, players, staff and supporters hope for. We
have just missed out on the playoffs over the past few seasons and this year that must be our major target and
ambition. Winning the Kent cup was fantastic for everyone and just shows what a team we can be especially
against the clubs like Bromley, Cray who we destroyed !! The playoffs this year are very important and I just
hope we can get there this time.
Just a few things on your FORMER captain Joe Dowley, I told him that I was only looking after the armband
until he gets back but I am starting to like the position / responsibility so we may have 100m race to see who
takes the band !!! I fancy myself in that ! To be fair Joe is very important to our team and we do miss his leader-
ship and will to win games but I am sure he will be back soon wearing them high shorts of his.
Right down to this year….. It’s been very mixed so far and quite difficult to write about. Over pre season we
have had a lot of players coming and going and it’s been tough for Abbo and Brady to settle down with a team.
We have a very young squad this year and will take some time getting used to and the need to give experience
for the younger guys. We have lost Bourney, Colin and Derren which were major blows as they were somewhat
of a spine of the team. Colin and Derren fair enough wanted to play higher which we can all understand but
Bourney just wanted more money to put in them big pockets of his so good luck to him. I can’t be bothered to
say much more about that really ! We have also made some great new signings with Matt in goal, RJ , Ross
Morley and Laurence. The first game against Dulwich H was very mixed. We started very well and just seemed
to take the foot of the peddle and let them back in the game. In the end the boys would take a draw and proba-
bly a fair result.
The game at Eastbourne again was very disappointing as I believe they are not going to be up there at the end
of the year. We have never done great down there and even though we got a point, we should really be beating
them and taking all 3 points. The one good thing about that game was our character as a side. Being down to
10 men and losing 4-2 with 30 mins to go and drawing 4 all was a great achievement. It’s also good to see us
scoring so well in games.
The FA cup was a huge disappointment to everyone at the club. This is the cup that not only should be fun and
ambitious but also helps the club out financially. Losing to Andover was horrible, probably one of the worst
teams I have played against ( and I have played against the Two Brewers Pub in Dartford which I don’t need to
tell you what they were like). Just want to say sorry to the staff and the supporters especially Andy Spice as I
know how important the funds are from that cup and how much that would help the club. All the players were so
disappointed after the game but that’s not an excuse…. we were rubbish on the day and went down to their
level.
The game vs. Mersham was a complete reflection of the Dulwich game, started well and then just seemed to
lose momentum towards the end and yet again another draw.
The away day at Bognor was not one I would want to remember, not only having to drive down there but losing
4-1 was shocking. We were just in my eyes bullied for the whole 90 minutes and we did not win our personal
battles. Every player must hold their hands up and take responsibility for the performance which was far from
playoff stuff. Abbo said before the game that our squad was not quite right and we needed to improve. The play-
ers knew this and we did not deliver. The team at this point looked quite low and picking ourselves up was
going to be tough.
Then onto Tuesday’s match against Ramsgate, a local derby and a game all players must get up for ! This
game was a complete opposite to all the previous games. We started great and kept that going for the whole
game. We totally battered them and proved what a great team we can be. Every player worked their socks off
for the whole game. Just want to say well done in that to Laurence and Reevsy at the back, great performance
and also Sam in midfield who is on loan to us from Cray. He played fantastic. Also, Joey H goal, like Gazza my
son !!!!
The Ramsgate game has given us a huge boost and takes us on a high to Chatham… I believe we can now goout and play with confidence and get further well needed points.
Thanks for your continued support its always very much appreciated by the players….

Dear SFC supporter,
It is with regret that I write regarding the future of the Sittingbourne Football
Club Supporters Association (Supporters Club).
In May at the Supporters Club Annual General Meeting (AGM) we combined
the occasion with an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM). The EGM was
called to review the requirement for and purpose of the Supporters Club due to
falling membership numbers and event attendances.
The EGM resulted in a vote, the overwhelming response of which was for the
Club to continue under a revised constitution. The role of revising the constitu-
tion would be carried out by the committee and offered for approval at a future
EGM.
During the AGM that followed, a call was made for volunteers to stand as com-
mittee members, none were forthcoming. At this point, quorum was being met
by the incumbent committee so, whilst disappointing, this result did not create
a problem.
Following the AGM however, a resignation from a committee member has been
received. This now creates an issue, as we no longer meet the number of com-
mittee members required to maintain quorum. Due to this, the committee is
unable to function as no voting can be carried out. We are therefore now no
longer in a position to be able to revise the constitution.
Those remaining members of the committee now feel that it is appropriate to
officially stand down. This will enable supporters of SFC to form a new commit-
tee. Resigning committee members may well stand again but a minimum of
seven committee members must be elected under the current constitution.
Should a committee not be formed then the resigning committee will oversee
the winding-up of the Supporters Club.
The resigning committee therefore must call another EGM to elect a new com-
mittee or formalise the procedure for the winding-up process. The EGM will
take place on Thursday 23 September at 8:15pm in The Clubhouse and we
urge as many supporters of SFC to attend as possible. The new season is the
time for renewals for the Supporters Club so currently only those with five year
memberships are officially members.
If you want SFC to continue to have a Supporters Club then please come
along to show your support and, where possible, become actively involved.
Yours sincerely

LAST WEEK – and on Non-League Day – my ten-year-old nephew Freddie took in his first
ever Non-League game.
In fact it was only his second live game and already he has seen both ends of the spectrum.
His first experience was just last month when he went to watch Manchester United at Wembley in
the Community Shield. In full United strip he sat and watched some of the world’s best players – and
one of the greatest English midfielders ever in Paul Scholes – as they ran out 3-1 winners against
Chelsea.
Last Saturday it was the slightly more low-key surroundings of AFC Sudbury’s King Marsh stadium
and a Ryman North clash with Romford.
Once again he was treated to four goals, all from Romford, and a totally different experience.
For different reasons he enjoyed both games.
Wembley, he tells me, was so good because it was so big. Even in the top tier he could see every-
thing that was going on and the atmosphere whipped up by the 85,000 people under the arch was
brilliant.
As a little keeper himself, he also got to see Edwin van der Sar and, of course, United won.
Just 325 people saw the Boro leapfrog the Yellows but his enthusiasm wasn’t diminished. Seeing the
players’ close-up and the friendliness of everybody at the club got the thumbs up.
It encapsulates everything Non-League Day was about. How one week you can see the top of the
game and the next have an equally enjoyable day watching the grassroots.
James Doe’s idea wasn’t designed to be a protest against Premier League and Championship
prices or a reaction to becoming disillusioned with the game’s elite.
More simply, the day was to encourage people to look closer to home when their side is at the other
end of the country or on Sunday TV and realise the importance local clubs play in the community.
With almost every club in the pyramid feeling the financial pinch even just one extra person through
the gate on a Saturday or a Tuesday evening makes all the difference.
While Freddie is desperate to go to Wembley again, he is also looking forward to his next Non-
League trip.
STRUGGLING to get up to speed with where everyone is playing their football this season? Then
make sure you get your hands on our Pyramid Poster.
