BOOSTED SUMMER LEARNING
DEEPENED COLLEGE READINESS SUPPORT
GENERATED A NEW JOURNALISM CURRICULUM
EXPANDED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TO NEW SCHOOL COMMUNITIES
The Summer Journalism Institute is a six-week job that offers young people an opportunity to improve their writing, build journalism skills, and get an insider perspective of major employers in Boston. Students write articles for Teens in Print, Boston’s only citywide newspaper written by and for teens.
Funding secured at Pros&Conversation underwrites 50% of the cost of WriteBoston’s Commonwealth Corp service member, who joined the staff this year to provide college workshops and support for students who are nearing graduation. Students are also offered one-on-one tutoring to help them apply to college and put their best foot forward in their application essays.
Event funds have helped kick-start an exciting new project: a free, public journalism-based curriculum designed to increase media literacy, teach critical research skills, and increase student writing competency. Once completed, the six-week flexible lesson plans will be accessible online for History and English teachers at urban middle schools nationwide.
Student literacy starts with skillful teachers. WriteBoston used event funds to send an instructional and literacy development coach to McKinley South End Academy, a Boston Public School, for weekly on-site professional development for teachers and school leaders. The support is designed specifically for McKinley and tailored to its student body, comprised of almost 100% of students with disabilities. WriteBoston provides training to 8 school districts and educational organizations.
FUNDING FROM OUR 2018 EVENT ENSURED THE SUCCESS OF VITAL WRITING PROGRAMS. HELP US DEEPEN OUR IMPACT IN 2019 BY SUPPORTING PROS&CONVERSATION—WRITEBOSTON'S ONLY ANNUAL FUNDRAISER.
