5S'' is a tool with Japanese roots, focused on fostering and sustaining high quality house keeping. ''5S'' is the beginning of a productive life for everyone, and is fundamental to productivity improvement. A clean, organised and systematic workplace directly impacts MUDA and thus impacts productivity, Quality, Costs and other factors. '5S' is a time tested and proven approach (in fact a stepping stone) to achieving World Class status. The 1st S stands for Seiri (sorting), 2nd S Seiton (arranging), 3rd S Seiso (cleaning), 4th S Seiketsu (maintaining) and the 5th S Shitsuke (self discipline). 5 S – INTRODUCTION

The physical environment determines ones behaviour. On the other hand, similar behavioural patterns among group of people defines culture. Thus, there is a strong link between culture and physical environment. Extrapolating, one can also find a strong link between the physical environment at the workplace and productivity.

(reduction in breakdowns).

Who can apply '5S' The '5S' concept is easy for everyone to

understand: it does not require understanding of difficult terminologies. It is simple, driven by logic and natural to human behaviour

 (1)        '5S' is within the reach of any private and public organisation - of any size

 (2)        It can be practised by any company in any business: manufacturing, commerce,  service etc

 (3)        and may be applied in educational institutions as well

5S-CertificationNPCC is introducing a National '5S'

Certification to develop and sustain a productivity culture across Mauritius. This Certification will reinforce the Muda Free Mauritius campaign.  Achieving Certification is a public declaration of commitment to high quality housekeeping and continuous improvement to meet customer needs.

Registration Any institution implementing '5S' should

apply to the National Productivity and Competitiveness Council (NPCC), Ground Floor, St James Court, St Denis Str, Port Louis for registration.

 A Certificate will be awarded by the NPCC and the Kaizen Institute (Africa Asia Pacific) to any institution which has successfully implemented '5S' practices at the Workplace (Gemba).

The Certificate is valid for two years, and a re-audit will be performed every two years to check on sustained actions by the recipient institution for continued validity of certification. Those organisations who are not using '5S' can avail of NPCC's '5S' related training and consulting services, before they aspire to compete for the award.

“ SORT OUT ITEMS ,ELIMINATE THE UNNECESSARY & STRAIGHTEN UP”.

This is the first step .Go through the identified area and sort through and then sort out the area that you want to implement 5S.

Identify what you need and DISCARD what you don’t.

THING IN ITS PLACE “ (PEEP) This is the second step. Assign separate locations for all essential

items. Mark spaces /areas ,so that they are self

explanataory and easily identifiable . Keep things in its assigned place. Ensure that things are ready to use when

needed.

Seiso (Spic & Span – Clean) ‘ CLEAN ,CLEAN & CLEAN This is the Third Step. Clean up the space /area before and after

use. Keep the area free of trash and dust. This activity includes . Wiping ,cleaning ,inspecting ,polishing to

maintain sparkling cleanliness – A PLACE TO BE PROUD ABOUT.

CONDITIONS , SO THAT ABNORMALITY STANDS OUT’

This is the fourth step Prevent the problems by keeping things

standardised and maintain a good environment .Use tags ,labels and bring in more visibility into the system.such that any other person can operate

‘MAINTAIN GOOD HABITS’This is the last of the five STrain yourself and those around you to be

disciplined Follow the proceeding 4S.This makes the environment around you a

pleasant one and this is THE KEY TO QUALITY!

A Practical Exercise to practise 5 S Congratulations ! This shows your

commitment to 5 S Now try this out. Take out your wallet (purse). NEXT Remove all the items that you have stuffed in

and dump it on the table. NEXT Yes ,all the items ,Credit cards , Visiting

Cards , Old bills ,reciepts

NEXT Now Sort out all those which are needed and

those which arent Discard those which arent! Needed and

segregate , those which are needed . Rearrange them systematically on the table ,

only those which are needed . Well , you have completed the first step

NEXT Look at your wallet , is it designed to hold what

you have emptied ? Are there separate pouches /Places and how

have you organised it. Earmark the pouches /Places /areas where you

want to keep Credit Cards,Bills to be claimed /to be used . Money (after all that what the wallet is primarily

for .,)Etc Etc .,

Now you have completed the second of the 5S i.e. ‘SYSTEMATIC ARRANGEMENT ‘

Next To implement the next step of Spic and

Span .you need to clean the wallet every day just before you retire for the day and also check before you start off.this ensures that no unwanted items are left in the wallet.

NEXT To standardise bring in some standarised

practises into your wallet /purse systems . Do not stuff the wallet with items like parking

tickets etc,which would not be used by you again (preseuming you don’t claim these as expenses(!) Throw it into the nearest DUST BIN.

Empty the wallet/purse on a daily basis of all the visiting cards collected and hand them over to

Your secretary to index file (if you have one ) or index file it properly.

Credit cards always to one side .Membership cards at an other side.

500 Rupees currency on one side and 100 Rupees in an other (Makes Sense)
