  • SORT

    (Organization)

  • SORT

Remove all items from the workplace that are not needed for current project.

Leave only the essentials for the job.

  • The need for Sorting As unneeded items accumulate, the following types of problems and waste tend to arise:

The workplace becomes increasingly crowded as unneeded items and un-used tools accumulate and take up valuable space. People have to walk and work around obstacles posed by unneeded items, which increases nonproductive motion waste.More time is wasted in searching for required parts and tools.

  • Is this a Problem in WorldWide Projects?

    You Decide...

  • When 1S discipline is well implemented:Problems are reduced. Safety is improved. Job quality is increased.Wasted space is reduced. Wasted time looking for parts or tools is reduced.

  • SET IN ORDER

    (Orderliness)

  • Set-In-Order Arranging needed tools and materials so that they are:

Easy to find.Easy to use.Easy to put back.

  • Why? It helps eliminates many types of waste on the job.

    Wasted motion.Wasted materials.Wasted time.

  • SHINE

    (Cleanliness)

  • Shine Keeping everything clean and readily usable.

  • Why? One of the key purposes of cleaning is to keep all equipment in top condition so that it is always ready to be used.

  • When 3S is not well implemented, the problems that arise include:

safety hazards, equipment breakdowns, customer complaints

  • STANDARDIZE

    (Standardized Cleanup)

  • StandardizeCREATE GUIDELINES for maintaining the improved conditions. DISCIPLINE is the Key.

  • Why?Without Standardize, improvements made with the first three disciplines would soon be lost as new employees are hired, people forget, etc. Standardize ensures Sort, Set, and Shine are maintained in their fully implemented state.

  • SUSTAINING

    (Discipline)

  • Sustain

Make a habit of properly maintaining correct procedures over time. The 5S must become part of the normal workday.

5S work must be brief, efficient, and routine.

  • What do we gain from 5S?A Five S program focuses on organization, cleanliness and standardization to improve profitability, efficiency, service and safety.

The bottom line is that a 5S program will improve profits, and at the same time improve both quality and safety.

*Warm-up exercises:Ask Participants to visualize their work areas.Ask them to go slowly over their works areas in their minds eye, trying to find the item in their work area that has not been used for the longest amount of time. Give them about two minutes for this.Have them jot down the name of this item, how long it has been since they used it, and why it is still on their work area. Then ask them to share their results, one at a time.

Frequently ask them examples from their own experience.Encourage learning group participants to answer each others questions and to share their ideas.

QUESTION: What problems occur in your work area because of the accumulation of unneeded items?
