Dear Members of the Xavier Community,

Our hallways at Xavier are very quiet today. Yesterday we held our graduation ceremony for 208 young men, celebrating their accomplishments during their four years with us and wishing them God’s blessings on all their future endeavors. As we sent them forth, we at the same time invited them to come

back often, keep us informed of their new experiences, and become loyal, involved members of our growing alumni community.

I commented at the graduation ceremony that this graduating class helped reacquaint me with Xavier after my twenty-three years away since I was an assistant principal here in the 1980’s. I am very grateful to them for their kind welcome and all they did for me during our one year together.

Xavier is a school filled with spirit and life, as I am reminded every day. We are blessed with a dedicated, caring faculty and staff who devote countless hours to our students to guide them to become the best they can possibly be. Our students work diligently at their studies and are involved in dozens of different sports and activities each day. They learn that Xavier is about building their character, nurturing their spiritually, and encouraging strong moral values to go with them as they mature during their four years here.

As you read through the pages of this issue of Xavier Today, you will read about many different facets of life at Xavier, and share in our pride for the accomplishments of our faculty, students and alumni. You will read about a variety of occasions when our school reached out to others in need. We are a blessed community and part of a Xavier education involves to learning to share our gifts and talents with others.

I am pleased to introduce to you in this issue our new principal, Mr. Brendan Donohue. Some of you know Mr. Donohue from his years here as a teacher and academic dean. He will now bring his passion for Catholic education and his love for Xavier to his new responsibilities as principal, and we pray that God will bless him in his new role.

As always, we are very grateful to all of you who support us in so many ways through your contributions to our annual fund, your membership in the St. Francis Xavier Society, and through volunteer activities and presence at school events. Your help enables us to continue our mission of providing a quality Catholic education to eight hundred sixty young men from over sixty cities and towns. Thank you for your support, and may God bless you for your generosity.

Sincerely in Christ,

Brother Brian Davis, C.F.X.Headmaster

2 Xavier Today

H eadmaster Brother Brian Davis, C.F.X. announced the appointment of Mr. Brendan Donohue as the new principal of Xavier High

School effective July 1st. “It has been my pleasure to work with Mr. Donohue since my arrival at Xavier last summer, and I look forward to working with him in his new role as principal” said Brother Brian.

In a letter to all present parents and guardians, Brother Brian said, “Mr. Donohue has served at Xavier High School for the past eight years, arriving in 2002 as a member of our social studies department, and becoming academic dean for grades nine and ten in 2004. Mr. Donohue is clearly committed to perpetuating the Catholic and Xaverian identity of our school begun by Brother Robert Sullivan and the first faculty of Brothers and lay colleagues forty-seven years ago. He is also a person with a strong academic background and proven administrative skills to help Xavier High School continue to develop as a fine academic institution. I believe he

will continue to work well with fellow administrators, faculty, staff, students and parents in the years ahead.”

Since last summer Brother Brian has served as both headmaster and principal. Xavier High School adopted the dual roles of headmaster and principal after being formally recognized as one of the Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools in 1998. The headmaster is charged with the administrative tasks of the school (much like a superintendent in the public schools) and the principal the educational duties. “I am looking forward to focusing my attention fully on the headmaster’s responsibilities next year. I am very grateful to our deans, Mr. Donohue, Mr. Gargano, Mr. Cerreta and Mr. Sizemore, for all of the extra duties they willingly took on during this transition year.”

Brother Brian also announced that Mr. David Sizemore, currently the Dean of Faculty Formation, will become the new Academic Dean, filling the spot vacated by Mr. Donohue. n

Jack Gastler ’74 Receives Catherine McCauley Award

Jack Gastler ’74 (standing 2nd from left) is congratulated by a contingent from Xavier (seated: Former principal Brother James Boyle, C.F.X., Director of Admissions Brother Thomas Fahey, C.F.X.; standing: Director of Advancement Michael Tommasi ’67, Jack, Dean of Faculty Formation David Sizemore ’86 and Brother Robert Houlihan, C.F.X.).

The team toured some national monuments while in Washington DC.

Congratulations to our Engineering Club who participated in the Real World Design Challenge (RWDC) this school year. The team was presented with the Governor’s Cup in February

from Connecticut Lt. Governor Michael Fedele for their winning design of a fuel efficient aircraft. The team went on to represent Connecticut in the national competition in Washington DC in March. Mr. Michael Humphreys is the moderator.

By winning the State Competition the team qualified to participate in the National Challenge. What this means is that the team had to complete another challenge similar to what they had done in the Governor’s Cup State Challenge. Upon completion of their solutions to the National Challenge they received an all expense paid trip to Washington D.C. to present their solution. There were twenty-five other states competing in the National Challenge in Washington D.C. Mr. Humphreys said “even though we didn’t take top awards in the Nationals, we are very proud of how our team represented Xavier and Connecticut.”

Each year, the State level Real World Design Challenge presents students with an opportunity to create solutions to a problem faced by one of our Nation’s leading industries. The 2010 Governor’s Cup State Challenge addresses fuel efficiency in aviation. This year, they were asked to design and optimize a business jet tail for

a specified cruise condition. Utilizing professional engineering design software, collaborative web-based tools, and the expertise of mentor scientists and engineers from federal agencies, the aviation industry, colleges and universities, student teams spent several months creating solutions to the Challenge.

The challenge scoring focused on design notebook quality, technical merit, innovation, teamwork and collaboration, and effective networking with mentors. The RWDC provides students with opportunities to apply the lessons of the classroom to the technical problems that are being faced in the workplace. n

Xavier’s Foreign Language Department celebrated National Foreign Language Week during the first week of March.

Chinese, French, Italian, Latin and Spanish each presented a display for a day at the main entrance of the school. The displays were academic in nature and were accompanied with music each morning. A poetry reading in its native language was held on Wednesday in the media center featuring students and faculty.

There was also a poster contest to illustrate one of the following themes: “LANGUAGE STUDY enhances our lives,” or “UNDERSTANDING THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY through language study.” All language students were welcome to participate.

Posters were judged on content, quality and use of the target language, neatness, and clarity. Award winners were: First – John T. Maher ’11 (Spanish); Second – Jason Menard ’10 (Spanish); and Third – Rowan Lucey ’12 (French); Honorable Mention went to senior Ken Baldwin and junior Riley Bergoderi. n

On April 26th, Old Saybrook Firefighter William Heiney ’06 was awarded the Bronze Medal of Valor for Prince Georges County Fire

Department. The ceremony was attended by his family Past Old

Saybrook Fire Chief David Heiney Sr, Old Saybrook Fire LT David Heiney Jr, and his Mother Elizabeth Heiney. Will is a third generation Old Saybrook Firefighter. His late Grandfather Eugean E. Heiney was a former Assistant Fire Chief.

On October 17, 2009 Will is credited with scaling a ladder and saving the life of a young child, a woman, a man, and then with the assistance of another firefighter a man that weighed in excess of 400 pounds from a burning apartment complex.

Will attends the Prince George Community College Paramedic Program in Maryland (one of the best in the country). While attending college he joined the Berwyn Heights Maryland Volunteer Fire Department which allows him to live in the station for free in exchange for tours of duty as a firefighter.

Will was a Right Offensive Tackle on our 2005 State Championship football team and worked to open holes for running back and NFL draft pick Amari Spievey who is referenced later.

above and Beyond the callHis father shared the following with Xavier’s head

football coach Sean Marinan. “What is not mentioned in these stories is some of the things that happened that made Will thankful for his football experiences. In the story it mentions that Will rescued a child from its mother’s arms. It does not mention that when he went back up the ladder to get the mother, the mother was not in the window. Will had to enter the apartment through the window and under the heat, smoke and flames found the woman who was helping her boy friend get their drug stash. Will had to use force to get them to the window and out onto the ladder. Both the mother and boyfriend had to spend weeks in the burn center.

The best part was that after these rescues they were told that an invalid was trapped in his bedroom. Will and another Fire Fighter broke out the 2nd floor window and found the invalid still in his bed — ALL 484 lbs. of him. They were cut off from their escape route and had to go

William Heiney ’06 Awarded Bronze Medal of Valor

back out the window with him. Will stated that he and the other Fire Fighter pushed the bed over to the window and rolled and dragged the guy over the window sill and out onto the ladder where Will carried the man down the ladder. He said that the hardest part was reaching the bottom where he had to squat with the guy and slide him to the ground.

Will said, “Thank God for the blocking drills (moving the bed) and time in the (blankety-blank) weight room (carrying and squats).”

A good point for your young ball players is they will never know when they will need to use the skills learned at Xavier or on the Football Field.

Will joins his twin brother David (also Xavier class of 2006) on the family wall of fame. David was awarded an O.S.F.D. Silver Lifesaving Medal back in 2008 for his efforts in saving a man at a fatal boating accident on the Connecticut River. 2006 Classmate Calin Calabrese was also given a commendation for his efforts at the same boating accident.

Thanks for making a difference in both of our boys lives as well as Amari and the other fine boys who attend Xavier.” n

Scott Bloomfield ’06 has completed a very successful senior year with the Temple

University men’s gymnastics team. Scott, who math teacher Mr. Andy Mule ’93 remembers as “a solid student,” didn’t have much time at Xavier for extra-curricular activities. He was already immersed in his quest to excel in gymnastics. This year he earned the title in the vault in the individual competition of the ECAC Championships held at William and Mary in April. He also helped lead the Temple team to a second place finish as he led all competitors on vault, scoring 15.700. The Temple Owls were one of 12 teams chosen to compete at the 2010 National Collegiate Men’s Gymnastics National Qualifier, held in April on the campus of the U.S. Military Academy.

The following is from the 2009-10 Media Guide describing Scott’s first three years at Temple.

Brother David Eddy, C.F.X. died February 15 of pancreatic cancer after being diagnosed in late fall. He was 61. Brother Eddy was a member of the Xavier High School faculty from

1976 to1985 and was inducted into Xavier’s Hall of Honors in 2007. In addition to teaching mathematics and computer science, he managed the school bookstore, organized the school’s sophomore retreat program and moderated a number of student activities. The photos were taken from the 1985 Don (Xavier’s yearbook) and the 2007 Hall of Honors.

Brother Eddy has spent most of the last 11 years in the Diocese of Arlington Virginia. Below are excepts from a staff report and obituary published in the Arlington Catholic Herald including words from Arlington Bishop Paul S. Loverde who Brother Eddy worked with for the last 25 years.

In addition to the funeral arrangements in Arlington, VA, in February, there was a wake at the Chapel at St John’s Prep in Danvers, Mass. and a funeral Liturgy followed. Interment took place at the Xaverian Brothers Cemetery in Danvers, Mass.

Excerpts that follow are reprinted with permission of the “Arlington

Catholic Herald”

It was almost impossible for the Catholic Herald staff to find a solo photo of Xaverian Brother David Eddy to accompany this

obituary despite his nearly 11 years of service in the Arlington Diocese. That speaks volumes about the man who lived to serve others, who avoided the spotlight even while constantly in it and whose life was devoted to overseeing the details of everyday life for Arlington Bishop Paul S. Loverde and the Chancery.

Bishop Loverde said: “I first met Brother David when I directed a retreat for the Xaverian Brothers at their high school in Middletown, Conn. In 1985, he began his service to the Church in the Diocese of Norwich, continuing on in the Archdiocese of Hartford and the Dioceses of Ogdensburg and Arlington. He not only served as my assistant and secretary, but also as Master of Ceremonies and designer-consultant on the renovations of the Bishop’s House in Ogdensburg and here in Arlington of the Chancery Offices and the Saint Thomas More Center.

“Brother David was not only a trusted collaborator in the service of the Church and a faithful religious, but also, in a very real way, a brother to me. Having no siblings of my own, he truly became my brother. ”

Born Feb. 19, 1948, in Worcester, Mass., Brother Eddy graduated from St. John’s High School in Shrewsbury, Mass., where he was taught by the Xaverian Brothers. He joined the Congregation of the Brothers of St. Francis Xavier on July 8,

Brother David Eddy, C.F.X. Remembered

1966, completing his novitiate at St. Joseph Novitiate in Newton Highlands, Mass., and pronouncing his first profession of vows on Sept. 8, 1968. He pronounced his perpetual vows as a Xaverian Brother on May 7, 1977.

Brother Eddy began his scholasticate at Xaverian College in Silver Spring, Md., and studied at Catholic University in Washington and the University of Massachusetts, earning a bachelor’s in mathematics in 1972. He did graduate studies at California State University in Long Beach, Calif.

Brother Eddy began his teaching career at Malden Catholic High School in Malden, Mass., where he taught mathematics and computer science from 1972-76. In 1976, he was transferred to Xavier High School in Middletown, Conn., where he taught, managed the bookstore, organized the sophomore retreat program and moderated a number of student activities.

In 1985 he agreed to assist then-Father Loverde in his new post as bishop’s delegate for clergy in the Office of Clergy Personnel for the Diocese of Norwich, Conn.

What was to be a 12-month assignment evolved into a 25-year mission spanning four dioceses. In 1988, Father Loverde was appointed Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Hartford, Conn., and asked Brother Eddy to be his assistant. During these years he continued to live with the Xaverian community in Middletown. In 1994, Brother Eddy again accompanied Bishop Loverde to the Diocese of Ogdensburg, N.Y., and in 1999 to the Arlington Diocese.

Brother Eddy was a member of the Knights of Columbus (fourth Degree) and the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher and collaborated with the Knights of Malta.

Brother Eddy lived by the motto “you do what needs to be done.” Whether helping to manage a staff of one or 150, driving a school bus or overseeing the renovation of the newly opened St. Thomas More Center, Brother Eddy met every new challenge with determination and faith.

In a 2008 interview, Brother Eddy said his life has been a leap of faith. “I’ve allowed God into my life and therefore what’s happening is not something I’ve plotted or planned,” he said. “I’m just sitting here being of service.”

Father Richard Mullins, administrator of St. Louis Parish in Alexandria, saw Brother Eddy the day before he died, thanked him for all their shared memories during the last decade and told him he would be in his prayers forever.

“As a religious he would have prayed every night the prayer … ‘Now, Lord, let your servant go in peace,’” Father Mullins said. “That’s what he was and what he always wanted to be: a good servant to the bishop and a good servant to the diocese. Now it’s time for him to go in peace and rest from all of his work.” n

Brothers (C.F.X.), 4409 Frederick Ave., Baltimore, MD, 21229, or to the

This spring, two graduates from Xavier’s class of 1986 came back to Middletown and donated copies of their books to Xavier’s Library. On separate occasions, Dr.

Christopher Coppola and Ronald J. (RJ) Pestritto took the opportunity to meet with Headmaster Brother Brian Davis, C.F.X.. Brother Brian was an Assistant Principal during their years here as students and both reminisced with Brother about teachers, students and activities from the early ’80s.

1986 Alumni Authors Visit Xavier

dr. christopher coppola, Xavier class of 1986, came back on March 31st to donate a copy of his recently published book, Coppola: A Pediatric Surgeon in Iraq, to the school library. It joins his previous book, Made a difference for that one: a surgeon’s letters home from Iraq which won the 2006 EPPIE for best nonfiction e-book of the year!

Dr. Coppola was in Connecticut for a bookstore signing at RJ Julia Booksellers in Madison. His book is also available at http://www.coppolathebook.com. He lives in Pennsylvania with his wife and three children.

Dr. Coppola was presented the St. Francis Xavier Award and inducted into the Xavier High School Hall of Honors in 2007. As a Xavier student from Madison, he was a National Merit Finalist, received the Harvard Book Award and was a member of the National Honor Society, Math Team, Camera Club, and MYARC and participated in the Xavier and Mercy Productions.

From his biographical information as listed on the coppolathebook.com website: “He is currently a pediatric surgeon in Danville, PA, working for Geisinger Health System in Janet Weis Children’s Hospital. His articles have been published in many prestigious medical journals including the Archives of Adolescent and Pediatric Medicine and Journal of Pediatric Surgery.”

1986 Xavier High School Alumnus and noted conservative scholar ronald J. (rJ) Pestritto returned to Xavier in April. He donated one of his books, Woodrow Wilson and the Roots of Modern Liberalism, to the school’s library.

RJ lives in Michigan with his wife and seven children. He is a political scientist (Charles and Lucia Shipley Chair in American Constitution and Associate Professor of Political Science) at Hillsdale College in Michigan. He has made guest appearances on Glenn Beck’s TV show on the Fox News Channel. He has been described as “among a handful of young conservative scholars, several of whom Beck has also featured, engaged in serious academic work critiquing the intellectual pedigree of modern liberalism.”

After graduating from Xavier, RJ earned his B.A. at Claremont McKenna College in California and went on to receive his M.A and Ph.D. degrees from Claremont Graduate University.

In March a group of Xavier alumni came together for a quick lunch and a “Meet and Greet” with Headmaster Brother

Brian Davis, C.F.X. at the Inn at Middletown. The Office of Advancement sponsored the meeting to help local alumni keep in touch with the school and to meet our Headmaster who has been at the helm since July 1, 2009.

One of the first guests to arrive was former math teacher Mr. Richard Boucher (photo speaking with Brother Brian). He said “When I heard about this, I knew I had to come and see some of the students that I had in class.” He was a teacher here from 1964 to 1997. As he read the name tags that were laid out on the table he quipped, “I tortured him and him and him…”.

It was a fun and informal gathering. Even though most of the attendees either live or work locally, for many this alumni event was their first chance to connect with one another in quite a while.

Michael Tommasi ’67 and Xavier’s Director of Advancement said, “We hope to be able to have more gatherings like this. We want to give our alumni every opportunity to remain connected to the school and each other. It is their success that is the true legacy of a Xavier education and we depend on them to help us carry on in the future.” n

Middletown Alumni Luncheon at the Inn

On March 23rd, Xavier hosted the Middlesex County Math

League’s annual awards dinner. Xavier’s mathletes had another successful year. The varsity

team placed third overall in the league. Senior Andrew Yandow was recognized both as Xavier’s team high scorer and as the

third-highest-scoring senior in the league. The JV team placed

first in the JV league. Freshman

Mario Chris was recognized as the team high scorer and the highest-scoring freshman in the JV league. Sophomore Tyler Ceste was also recognized as the third-highest-scoring sophomore in the JV league.

Congratulations to the entire math team on another fine season!

Freshmen Grandparents’ Day and Fine Artsmay 6, 2010: Xavier High School held its second “Grandparents’ Day” for freshmen. A similar event had been held in December. Another large group of freshmen Grandparents gathered in St. Joseph Hall where they were greeted by members of the Office of Advancement.

National Honor Society members led tours of the school and the Spring Fine Arts display. They were then brought to reserved seating in the Arthur M. Koh’s Gymnasium for a Spring Concert by the Xavier concert band, jazz ensemble and chorus with a special guest appearances by Mr. Ron Horton on Trumpet and Mr. Landon Knoblock on piano. The musicians were led by Director of Music Christopher Dresko and Assistant Director Erik Elligers.

Fine Arts Department Chair Ms. Jayne Vitale also used the occasion to present Fine Arts Awards to students, whose work was on display, including the prestigious “Best in Show” award to Junior John T. Maher.

The day culminated in a hospitality tea when grandsons joined their grandparents in the St. Joseph Dining Hall. Headmaster Br. Brian Davis, C.F.X. then shared his thoughts on the many things facing their freshmen grandsons as they have entered Xavier

Grandparents’ Days Showcase Student talentHigh School. He thanked them for all the support that they have provided to their grandsons over the years. Brother Brian also shared his hopes for the students as they continue their education at Xavier.

Junior Grandparents Honoredmay 13, 2010: It was colder than your average mid May morning. But the sun was out and the morning haze was burning off as more than 120 grandparents came to Xavier this morning. It was the second time in a week that Xavier High School opened its doors to student’s grandparents. Last week more than 100 freshmen grandparents were introduced to the school. Today it was the junior class that invited these special family members to visit Xavier.

Members of the National Honor Society greeted the visitors and ushered them into the St. Joseph’s dining hall where they were treated to a breakfast with their grandsons. Mr. Brendan Donohue, Academic Dean (and effective July 1, the new Principal of Xavier High School) reminisced about the important role that his grandfather played in his life and urged the grandparents to share their stories and their wisdom with their grandsons. He stressed how important those words can be in their grandsons’ education and development as young men. He also urged the juniors to tell their grandparents how important they are and of the love and appreciation that they have for them.

In the combined events, approximately 500

grandparents were welcomed to see their grandson’s

Xaverian educational experience.

the Closing Prayer

Dear God, we thank all the grandparents for their role

in the community and their continued support to

their grandchildren. Xavier High School appreciates the

presence of the grandparents and all they do in the lives

of our students. We ask for your blessing upon them that

they continue to fill our lives with love and bring joy to the

large Xavier High School family. Thank you grandparents

for all you bring to Xavier High School. As the School year is

winding down, we ask for you to continue to challenge our

academic skills and instill the virtues of zeal, compassion,

humility, trust, and simplicity in the Xavier Community.

Help us get through the rest of the year to the best of our

abilities; and bless all the seniors as they prepare for their

graduation. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,

Amen.

Presented by National Honor Society member, junior Chris Danko

After this very social hour, the grandparents were escorted to the Arthur M. Kohs gymnasium where Mass for the Feast of the Ascension was celebrated for the entire school. Mr. Donohue opened the assembly with a call to worship and Reverend Gregory Galvin, Vocation Director for the Diocese on Norwich was celebrant. Music was provided by the school chorus.

This was the fourth grandparents event hosted this year by the Office of Advancement (two in December and two in May). In the combined events, approximately 500 grandparents were welcomed to see their grandson’s Xaverian educational experience. n

Commencement

2010

We welcomed His Excellency, Bishop Michael

Cote, the spiritual leader of the Norwich Diocese, as well as the Class of 2010 and their parents, guardians, relatives, friends, special guests, teachers, counselors, and staff to Xavier High School’s forty-fourth commencement exercise on May 16, 2010.

During the prior evening’s Baccalaureate Mass, Fr. Galvin read the following words from St. John’s Gospel – the prayer of Jesus to his heavenly Father concerning his apostles: “Father, they are your gift to me…I made known to them your name that the love with which you loved me may be in them.”

Emcee Brother Thomas Ryan, C.F.X. said “For the past four years Xavier High School has been gifted with the talents, the potentials, the personalities, the achievements, the joys and the sorrows of the 208 young men sitting in the front of this gymnasium. Sometimes the gift-wrapping may have become a bit undone, but the message on the gift card was always the same – Be A Man, a Man like Christ, and the Father’s love will always remain in you. I am sure it is the hope and prayer of those on this stage as well as all in this audience that the lives of these graduates continue to be gospel-centered, filled with life and goodness, blessed and made holy.”

received the Brother Celestine Award, is on the Math Team, and a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society.

CAS (Connecticut Association of Schools) member high schools are given the opportunity to nominate one junior ranked in the top four percent of his/her class. The assigned essay “How have you been affected by technology, both positively and negatively?” had to be completed. Members of the Governor’s Scholars Committee, professional educators from Connecticut,

Lenehan Wins CAS Govenor’s Scholar Awardjudged the applications and assigned a composite score based on rank in class, PSAT or SAT scores, CAPT scores (for public schools), and the student essay.

Under the direction of Education Commissioner, Mark McQuillan, CAS and Big Y World Class Markets have collaborated to extend the Governor’s Scholars Program. Now in its fourteenth year, the program recognizes academically talented high school students throughout the state, and presents thirty students for special recognition to the Governor of Connecticut.

Winners attended the Governor’s Scholars Luncheon, received recognition and information on courses at selected Connecticut colleges and universities. Included in the latter is a four-year, half-tuition scholarship to the University of Connecticut for any of the Governor’s Scholars who choose to matriculate there.

Big Y has been a corporate partner of CAS since 1997. n

Maher’s Entry Wins Poster PrizeEach year every high school

student in the state is invited to create an inspirational poster that best brings awareness and understanding of the need for organ and tissue donors. This year, over 30 schools participated with nearly 400 individual entries.

There are currently more than 106,000 patients on the national transplant, and 18 people die every day due to the shortage in organs.

In Connecticut, over one million licensed drivers are registered on the Connecticut Organ and Tissue Donor Registry. To register as an organ and tissue donor visit www.DonateLifeNewEngland.org or register when renewing your state driver’s license at the Department of Motor Vehicles. Sophomores Andrew Sherer and Daniel Mayne, both from Old Lyme, volunteered their February vacation time to a worthy cause. The students traveled to El Salvador as part of a group of

28 volunteering for The Fuller Center for Housing. Millard Fuller, who founded Habitat for Humanity in 2005 started the Fuller Center, whose motto is “Building a Better World, One House at a Time.”

For six days the group built housing in San Luis Talpa, El Salvador. In 90°+ temperatures, they mixed concrete, poured foundations and walls, and worked tirelessly with the residents to construct homes.

Prior to their trip, the group collected much-needed donations for the Salvadoran people. They arrived with 15+ suitcases filled with donated medical supplies, shoes, towels, clothing, even soccer balls and Frisbees for the children.

When asked if they would do it again, both boys agreed that the hard work was worth every minute — just to see the smiles of the Salvadoran people — knowing how appreciative they were. One student commented that the sense of accomplishment was unbelievably rewarding, and worth every ounce of sweat.

Both young men have been consistent honor roll students and were recognized on the Headmaster’s List for 2008 – 2009. The List is comprised of students who had a final grade point average of 3.5 or higher with no grade below B on the final average in a major course. n

24 Xavier Today

March 23, 2010: The Xavier science department annually hosts the Blood Drive as one more way of giving back to our

community. All of our students participate in community service. The Blood Drive is just one example of how we ask them to be a role model for others; to show their peers how to integrate the Gospel and the Gospel values into their lives.

Mr. Rajbir Jaswal, science department chair and chairman of the blood drive said, “Our goal was to gather 66 units of blood. Student turnout was strong this morning.” That was at 10 o’clock; just an hour and a half into the drive and almost 40 donors had

been processed. At day’s end he told us “We finished with 64 units. That was right near our goal. I would really like to thank Mr. Donohue and the Columbian Squires for all their help. I would also like to send my sincere appreciation to the Cafeteria staff for the hospitality and their support. It was a successful blood drive and a special thanks to all that gave blood.”

Red Cross personnel noted that a total of 64 units should benefit about 200 individuals. Each unit typically helps about three people. In addition to donating blood, volunteers registered donors, served after-donation refreshments and helped out in

other ways. The Red Cross website

states, “From its beginning, the American Red Cross has formed a community of service, of generous, strong and decent people bound by beliefs beyond themselves. The honor, spirit and resources of the American people come forth with neighbors helping neighbors in need — during earthquakes, floods, fires, storms — and also for the deeply personal and often quiet disasters that require a gift of blood.” n

Annual Bloodmobile Giving Back to the Community

On April 19th during the 114th running

of the Boston Athletic Association’s Boston Marathon, one of the thousands of runners to participate was Xavier alumnus and amateur athlete Justin Bourassa ’04, now a Brighton resident.

Justin ran for a good cause. He was running for 7-year-old Stanley Perou, his Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge Patient Partner of Brockton, Mass. Perou was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at age four, and his battle with cancer has been nothing short of miraculous.

Before age six, treatment and trauma from the disease caused Perou to slip into a coma for two

Justin Bourassa ’04 Runs for a Good Cause

weeks. Upon waking, Perou faced paralysis from the neck down. Having no choice but to teach himself to sit up, eat, speak, and walk again, Perou just finished his first basketball season this winter, proving his mettle at beating this horrible disease.

Having completed his first marathon in 2007 (known as “The Marathon They Almost Canceled” due to inclement weather through the start of the prestigious race), Bourassa also finished last year’s

Boston with girlfriend Caitie Peterson, 23. As members of the 559-person Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team, Bourassa and Peterson had personal fundraising goals of $8,500 each, all of which go directly towards basic innovative cancer research as

part of the Claudia Adams Barr program at the Boston-based Cancer Institute.

Justin T. Bourassa is an English teacher at Arlington High School and can be reached at [email protected]. n

Channel 3 WFSB reports: Xavier is a “Cool School” t v B r o A d c A s t s P r e A d s t H e w o r d …

Channel 3 WFSB featured Xavier as the “Cool School” of the week on March 12th. The live broadcast from 5–7 a.m. was hosted by

Mark Dixon. Students began to arrive in earnest by 4:30 a.m.

Almost half of the student body and a strong contingent of faculty, staff and administration were represented well before the 5 a.m. kickoff segment and the noise and enthusiasm was evident.

Our cheerleaders (from Mercy High School) came to add another layer of participation.

Live segments included, cameos by our MYARC volunteers, jazz choir, hockey team, Ryken Service Society and many more.

At about 6 a.m., our football team’s intramural basketball team took on the faculty to add to

the morning’s entertainment. The faculty prevailed 39–37.

Refreshments were provided by Dunkin Donuts, Southside Market, Home & School Association and Navin Brothers.

Team work makes it happen. The “Guidance and Career Night” for approximately 200 juniors and their parents is an annual February event sponsored by the Guidance

Department, Honor Society and Alumni Office. Honor Society officers and volunteers checked in junior class

students and acted as assistants to the evening’s guest speakers.Parents gathered in St. Joseph Hall where guidance counselors

presented information on the college search process, SAT’s, and financial aid.

The boys were able to observe three career presentations. “We believe that this is an excellent opportunity for your sons to gain additional information about their future” said Richard Magner ’69, Director of the Guidance Department. The presentations were informal and questions were encouraged.

Based on the careers students had suggested, Joe Lane ’95, Assistant Director of Advancement, contacted alumni, former speakers and others to make presentations. Twenty different careers were showcased during the evening and fourteen presenters were Xavier Alumni.

We offer additional special thanks to Ms. Vitale and Mr. Gargano and all those who played a part in making this a very special evening for the juniors and their parents. n

Mason Passavant (Xavier Class of 2012) of Middletown and Emily Dzialo (Mercy Class of

2012) of Middlefield were recently honored with the “Trevor Palonen Top Youth Walker Award” from the March of Dimes Connecticut Chapter at a reception held at the Omni New Haven Hotel at Yale. This award was established in honor of Trevor Palonen, a top youth fundraiser for the March of Dimes, who passed away in 2006 at the age of 16, due to lifelong

complications resulting from premature birth. Thanks to fundraising efforts from people like Mason and Emily as well as corporate

support, the March of Dimes invested more than $4 million in research and programs in Connecticut alone in 2009. The March of Dimes works to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.

Coincidentally, Mason and Emily, who formerly attended the Strong School in Durham together, are both among the top youth fundraisers for the March of Dimes in the Middletown area, the State of Connecticut, and the United States. The Passavant and Dzialo families are proud of these two compassionate students and know they will continue their volunteerism throughout their high school and college years. n

“The relentless beat of the drums”

In most cases, it is essential to be persistent in order to be successful. You wonder at times if the effort

is worth it….if the end result is worth the commitment and hard work. Encouraging our alumni, parents and friends to partner with Xavier in the formation and development of our students into future leaders is worth the persistence.

Working together as a team, as a community, as partners, will allow us to sustain the level of excellence that is synonymous with Xavier. The economy has challenged us and at the same time, has helped us to realize that the ongoing support from the Xavier family is one of our most valued characteristics. Even with all that we confront in life, I believe that God gives us the strength and faith to succeed. It is because of the generosity from alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty/staff, and friends, that 99% of Xavier’s graduates go on to institutions of higher learning each year.

We have the opportunity and responsibility to shape the hearts and minds of our young men. Your ongoing support has and will continue to make a difference in their education and careers.

Get involved…Invest in Xavier’s Commitment to Excellence

Michael A. Tommasi ’67Director of Advancement

For creating the winning design, senior Jason Menard (second from right) received an ipod. Two

(including Jason) decided to wear the t-shirt backwards to display the design on front and back.

Class of 2010 – New Xavier AlumniLeaders of the Senior Class met to

determine the best way the class of 2010 could leave an impression on Xavier High School with a class gift. Senior officers of the National Honor Society, Student Activities Council and other class leaders generated many ideas, but they decided to design and sell a “class 2010 t-shirt.” A contest was held for the t-shirt design and shirts were sold to everyone in the class of 2010 during lunch in the final weeks of school.

41 members of the senior class participated in this initiative. The Class of

2010 senior gift to Xavier totals $615 and will be applied toward the Annual Fund Drive. We are very proud that these newest alumni have already taken the opportunity to give back to their school! With 41 “new alumni” participating, the Class of 2010 will be in the running for largest number contributing to this year’s AFD, and for the largest number of new contributors for a class year.

Check our website or watch for the Annual Report to see how they stack up against the other classes. n
